5-3. Tied for first place in the AFC East. This is what it’s all about.

Sunday night the New York Jets will play the New England Patriots for the 106th and quite possibly most important time in the 51-year history of this vicious rivalry. And no, it’s not because the all-time series is tied 52-52-1 coming in.

It’s because this could be the time the Jets turn the tables on the Pats’ near decade-long stranglehold on the division. This could be the moment the Jets transform themselves into the big kid on the block. This could be the starting point of our long dreamed about era of Jet dominance.

We, as a fan base, have been waiting for this opportunity for so long and it is so tantalizingly close. All I can say to Rex and the boys is “please! Please defy history and take us to the next level.”

I would love nothing more than to see these Jets take control of the division by rudely snatching it from the hands of Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. I can see the emotionless look on Mumbles face as he has to shake Rex’s hand and congratulate him for kicking his annoyingly arrogant ass. I can see Brady mope his way off the field with his head hanging after the Jets defense physically brutalizes him for four quarters.

I want to hear Al Michaels have to snarl that the Jets are in first place all by themselves in the AFC East (am I the only one who notices that Michaels says the word “Jets” like it’s a curse word?) I want to see Rodney Harrison have to break down a Jets victory postgame.

I want to read Peter King’s 20/20 hindsight breakdown of the Jets run to the top of the division. I want to see all of the “experts” on ESPN who picked us to lose to the Bills this past Sunday have to explain how the Jets have taken control of the AFC East.

But most of all, I just want it to finally be our turn. I want the Jets to be THAT team for a while. I want the Jets to be the team that everybody hates and gets sick of because we’re always kicking everyone’s ass.

Why not us? Who ever thought prior to 2001 that the Patriots would ever be a dominant team? The 49ers were a punch line up until 1981, as were the Steelers before the 1970s.

It’s about time that it’s the Jets turn. We’re a friggin’ New York team; we’ve got a huge head start on being hated already. We just need to finally be great on the field for a while!

And it all can start Sunday night. Sunday can be the launching pad.

Strap yourselves in Jets fans; this could be one hell of a ride!

It is good, people will read it. Everyone seeks out the good.

Agreed. If it's good, they will read. :D

This is literally the opportunity we've been waiting for. The Pats are on their heels, have the worst D in the entire league, just cut their big FA acquisition of 2011 and are coming into our house while were on a 3 game win streak. We all knew that if we were ever going to take the division it was going through NE. This is it!!! The story is laid out perfectly. It's time to take what has been out of reach for so long and smash their faces in!!!!!!

GO JETS!!!

Holy crap bro -- that is BRUTAL.

I've wised up a little...for other prime time games I'll tivo it, get up an hour and a half early for work (4am) and watch it, fast forwarding through commercials and BS between plays. Not this one though. Jets vs. Pats...gotta watch it live.

Well, technically the Jets had the same opportunity last year at 9-2 going into NE and got the sh*t kicked out of them to the tune of 45-3.

Otherwise, I agree. Need to choke those ****ers out and take the AFCE...the 2nd time around.

No dwelling on the past. Focus on the present. If we're going to be a dominant fanbase of a dominant team we have to pretend that the horrific past never happened.

I'm just saying...you made it sound like we havent had this opportunity when the reality is, we had it last year. Only, this time its at home and I think the Jets are playing significantly better Football.

No excuses this weekend. Just results.

Barring injury, I think this is a perfect setup for a no-excuses game. We've shown we know what we're doing, they're the Patriots, so they know too (even if they can't execute it).

They have no secondary, and big names in the locker room are getting cut midseason. We're supposed to know how to run & setup the pass. If we find a way to still stink on Sunday, then we've earned every bit of the media's criticism this year.

If we win, the opposite is just as true.

Nicely written article. Any long-time and die-hard Jets fan will agree with it.

"Why not us?" and "It's our turn" are wishful thoughts, but the reality is that we are owed nothing. Just because we haven't tasted a championship in forever doesn't mean we are guaranteed to get one now. On the other hand, thanks to Woody, Rex, Tanny, the Jets have shown to be a better team in the last 2.5 years than any period before (except for the Super bowl team). That is certainly something to be optimistic about!
