BaumerJet
Giants', Jets' new home to have built-in advantage Wednesday, November 30, 2005 By JOHN BRENNAN STAFF WRITER The Jets and Giants don't know exactly what their new jointly owned stadium in the Meadowlands will look like - but they do know what they want it to sound like. "We want to make sure that the stadium is loud," Jets President Jay Cross said Tuesday, just days before the two teams are to submit their response to the state's ground lease proposal for the stadium. "We want the building to be a '12th man,'" Cross said, referring to cheering by fans. "It needs to be an intimidating place for the visiting team. One idea we're pursuing is to really concentrate on the end-zone seating, so that as an opposing team is driving down the field, it's like what basketball teams face when everyone is waving stuff behind the basket." Cross said the teams may wind up building the lower deck, mezzanine and upper deck as close to the field as is practical in each end zone, creating a sense for fans of being close to the field while also fostering reverberation of noise. Giants Vice President John Mara agreed, adding that "an intimate setting" is a priority for both teams in the new building, which would open in 2009 or 2010. Cross credited Giants executive Steve Tisch for the "12th man concept," giving an indication of the cooperation the teams seem to have achieved since reaching a preliminary deal with the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority in late September. Disputes about such issues as the location of the Giants' practice facility were solved in the days before the deal was signed, and a three-day brainstorming session a month ago among each club's executives has led to compromise on several fronts. For instance, the Jets have backed off their preference for a 90,000-seat stadium, settling instead for an 82,000-seat model that is only 2,000 seats more than the current stadium's capacity. But the Giants have scrapped plans for an asymmetrical seating bowl that would have placed the 200 luxury suites and all 8,000 premium "club" seats on one side of the stadium. "The professional relationships have been exemplary," said sports authority Chairman Carl Goldberg. "They seem to be working their way through design issues without any tension at all." The sports authority submitted a first draft of the stadium ground lease to the teams last week. The Jets and Giants now must submit technical documents that would allow the agency to bring the lease and a preliminary master plan to a vote of the sports authority board. "It's our hope and expectation that this deal will be put to bed, for all intents and purposes, before the time [acting] Governor Codey leaves office" in January, Cross said. Codey played a lead role in producing the agreement for a new stadium. Governor-elect Jon Corzine has said he would have to review the financial details before offering his unqualified support. But Cross and Jets Vice President Matthew Higgins said Corzine has been supportive of the stadium in their meetings with him. Still, Corzine's dream of using the new stadium as the centerpiece for a New Jersey-centric Summer Olympics bid for 2016 may be fading. "There is a way to build the stadium to leave [conversion to an Olympic track and field facility] open as a possibility," Cross said. "But we're not, for the moment, contemplating building it that way." Cross said a renovation that would be required to provide the extra space for an Olympic track would be expensive and create "considerable disruption." "There's certainly no reason for an NFL tenant to sponsor an Olympic bid, and beyond that, the inconvenience factor is pretty significant," Cross said. The teams have no interest in building a retractable roof, either, but Cross said it might be possible to add a temporary fabric roof for major events. The extent of an overhang - or if there will be one - is being discussed by the teams. Cross said renderings of the stadium exterior that the teams will submit this week will be "fairly generic." "Our highest priority at the moment is the land transaction that has to take place with New Jersey," Cross said. "We're going to give ourselves until, say, next March to submit the design work - the seating bowl, the materials and so forth. We need more time there, because we really are starting from scratch." Construction on the football stadium could start next summer. Preliminary plans for a symmetrical seating bowl and traditional 360-degree seating - as opposed to the current NFL trend toward open-corner stadiums - does not mean that fans should expect a remake of the old stadium, Cross said. "Hopefully, this is going to have a significant amount of architectural appeal as you're approaching the stadium," said Cross, who has a master's degree in architectural technology from Columbia University. "Much as I think Giants Stadium has its attributes, architectural appeal would not be one of them." The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' seven-year-old stadium features a 103-foot-long replica of a pirate ship in one end zone. Cross hopes to be at least as creative in the Meadowlands. "Our goal is that if you're a visitor, there's no question in your mind that you're in New York - the New York region," Cross said. "That is, it has to have a certain entertainment factor that reflects that we're in the entertainment capital of the world. We're talking about the scoreboard design, the sound system, all sorts of innovative ideas." Cross added that Tisch, a major Hollywood producer, had joked about having executives from both teams fly to Hollywood to brainstorm with leading special-effects experts. "Oh, I'm not so sure that Steve was kidding about that," Mara said. Still, the legendary Mara family conservatism may work against any potential excesses. "We're still not going to have any cheerleaders," Mara said. E-mail: brennan@northjersey.com Copyright

bitonti
No cheerleaders. Let the players find their own whores and the fans find their own strippers. The fact that we don't have cheerleaders is one of the few areas where the Jets franchise is actually better than most in the league. Keep it classy. If you want to see cheap cooze you all know where to go.

Keep it classy. The Dallas Cowboys with the cheerleaders help make their organization one of the top's in the NFL and best known even outside of the U.S. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders help make them "America's Team", at least in the past. You gotta love those cheerleaders!
