NY Jets player calls WR ‘a cancer’

Santonio Holmes was pouting on the field and in the huddle on Sunday, and was benched by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer late in the fourth quarter in Miami, but his attitude for the game was set last week in a meeting Mark Sanchez called with the wide receivers.

As the Jets cleaned out their lockers on Monday after their disappointing season ended on Sunday, a source told the Daily News that Holmes gave Sanchez a hard time at the meeting on Wednesday. When Sanchez got the group together again on Thursday, Holmes did not show up.

PLAY JETS KEEP 'EM OR DUMP 'EM

"He went back and forth with Mark at the meeting," the source said. "He was saying stuff like, "What am I even here for?" Then he blew off Mark by not even showing up the next day."

Holmes did not catch a pass in Miami, the first he time he's been shut out in his career. He was targeted only once. A source told the Daily News that Holmes wasn't paying attention to Sanchez in the huddle as early as the second quarter. At halftime, Holmes was "moping in front of his locker," according to a source.

"He's a cancer," one player said. "It's like dealing with a 10 year old."

After Sanchez met the media Monday, the News attempted to ask Sanchez about last week's meetings. He refused to even let the question be asked. "No," he said. "I'm done."

Holmes got into shouting matches in the huddle on two consecutive series in the fourth quarter. Players were upset that Holmes appeared disinterested and not even listening to Sanchez in the huddle.

"Go home. Go to the sidelines," one player said to him.

They began screaming at each other in the huddle. On the next series, tackle Wayne Hunter and Holmes got into it in the huddle. Soon after, Holmes was benched when Patrick Turner ran on the field, tapped him on the shoulder and told him he was replacing him. Holmes then sulked on the bench.

Holmes just finished the first year of a five-year $45 million contract he signed as a free agent right after the lockout ended. He did not speak to the media Monday. He left the locker room with a box under his right arm and his Jets helmet in his left hand. He was escorted out of the locker room by the Jets public relations director.

i'm not saying holmes handled this right but i don;t blame him for being frustrated. sanchez and the offense suck.......

When pretty much every player on the Jets who has said a word about the situation has turned against Holmes, I think that pretty much flushes this ridiculous justification crap right down the toilet. I understand the disdain that's developed for Sanchez, but this is just getting pathetic. Holmes is a complete scumbag, and there is nobody to blame for that but him.

Yep. Its like being the best shooter on your basketball team but you never get the ball on a team who cant score to save their life.

I'd be frustrated too.

Exactly. Holmes is "frustrated" and people see that as justification for him to FU his teammates? This is ridiculous. Like you said, to a man, the Jets players are against Holmes in this situation.

How do we know that Mark isnt a complete scumbag? I mean, all we know about the kid is that he's been accused of rape in college and he's been seen with teenagers around NYC and apparently he's a lazy pos who doesnt really like Football all that much. I mean, remember when Mark wasnt talking to anyone and was just playing a like a pissed of little kid?

What has Holmes done? Smoked some weed? Yelled at his Qb that is preventing his team from going the playoffs?

Mark doesn't pubicly bash his teammates, quit on the team, or have multiple teammates calling him a dooshbag.

We get it - Mark had a bad year. It's the height of stupidity to try and somehow justify Santonios actions because Sanchez isn't Tom Brady.

Your post sucks.

Yeah every man for himself -that creates losers like the Jets were this year- Thanks Santonio

Really? I think Santonio has every right to be frustrated. He feels alot like the person that gets paired with me in the three legged race at the family picnic. A receiver is only as good as the QB and right now Sanchez is better throwing the ball to D lineman than receivers.

i agree. someone on this forum said that holmes isnt even as good as Branch. i find that rediculous, if you put holmes on a team like the patriots, GB, saints or even falcons he would be putting up huge numbers.

Why? From what I can see (never mind what we hear from people) Sanchez is a little whinny mopping bitch on the field. Head down, arms to his side, little ******* cry baby. Didnt he go weeks without celebrating with his team after TD's, not talking to anyone on the sidelines, but then had the audacity to go yell at the defense to make a stop when he finally woke up after 4 quarters of play when they had been lights out?

So Mark doesnt call anyone out. Ya know why? He sucks. He doesnt have the right to.

Homes is a play maker. Last year he was fat and happy because Sanchez played well with a great team around him. This year team not as good and Sanchez JAG showed. It's fine, let Santonio go win with another team and we will be stuck with the face of the franchise. SOFJ.

Yes, but it's only the a$$hole uncle that no one likes who calls you out on it in front of everyone

Bout time someone did. A change needs to be made. We will fire Shotty and Sanchez will play like crap next year. If Holmes and or Plax leave how many top tier wideouts would want to come here? Yes, ZERO.

A bad year?

Sanchez sucked this year, and the last 2 years, but (not saying you're doing it) to give that as a justification for Holmes is ridiculous.

Holmes’ antics have been going on all year but exploded in Miami when he pouted during the game, ignored Sanchez in the huddle and infuriated his teammates.

“Go home. Go to the sidelines,” one player yelled at him.

Holmes and the player began screaming at each other in the huddle. On the next series, tackle Wayne Hunter and Holmes got into it in the huddle. Soon after, Holmes was benched by Schottenheimer. Holmes then sulked on the bench. He alienated so many players in the locker room that the Jets have to get rid of him.

“He’s a cancer. It’s like dealing with a 10-year-old,” a Jets source said Monday.

One Jets source described how Holmes undermined Sanchez last week. The struggling quarterback called a meeting Wednesday with his wide receivers. Holmes showed up but gave Sanchez a hard time.

“He went back and forth with Mark at the meeting,” the source said. “He was saying stuff like, “What am I even here for?’”

Sanchez called another meeting for Thursday. Holmes disrespected his quarterback. “He blew off Mark by not even showing up,” the source said.

After Sanchez met the media Monday, the Daily News attempted to ask him about last week’s meetings. He refused to even let the question be asked. “No,” he said. “I’m done.”

Yes he is. And so are the Jets.

Ryan is to blame on many levels. He’s so enamored of his people skills that he believes he can coach anybody. The Jets had strong leadership last season but it was lacking this year with the departures of Jerricho Cotchery, Tony Richardson and Damien Woody.

One source said Cotchery was desperate to get out because he couldn’t bear the thought of sitting in the receivers meeting room. He forced the Jets to release him and took a $940,000 pay cut down to $860,000 to play for the Steelers. Cotchery was an irreplaceable leader.

***

There are going to be some unhappy players if he’s back. “His practice habits were terrible,” the source said. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”

I highly doubt that quote, but lets see:

holmes:

-sold drugs as a teenager

- arrested twice in two months for disorderly conduct

- threw glass in another ladies face at nightclub

- kicked off plane for disorderly conduct (ipod issue).

Yeah he's a saint who only smokes weed. Sanchez may suck, but assholes are always assholes.

exactly. Everyone is calling for santionio to be cut. He is by far our best offensive weapon and if we cut him our offense will just get that much worse.

Sanchez wasn't the one who spotted the Eagles 14 points. That was Holmes and I didn't see anyone in the locker room tripping over themselves to sh*t on him in post game interviews the way he so often does.. Sanchez sucks but Holmes is twat

There is no way Holmes won't be on this team next year, it's not happening. With that said, Holmes needs to get his act together and act like the veteran he is, not storm out of meetings or fight with the other players on offense when our offense is struggling. Fighting and missing meetings doesn't help this offense get any better.

Barry Sanders never celebrated a TD. What does that have to do with anything? He reigned in the enthusiasm because he wanted to try and portray a business attitude because of the heat he was taking.

Sanchez has twice paid for his receivers to go out to southern ca and spend a week working and having fun. That alone is more than "Cpt Holmes" will ever do.

Sanchez had a crap year - no doubt about it. That doesn't excuse Holmes' behavior in any way, shape, or form. Are you saying because you have a co-worker that sucks you're going to start slacking off? When your boss calls you out on it you're going to say "well I've noticed Tom sucks lately so I figured I'd join him"? It's crap logic.

Sanchez used to celebrate with his teammates, he used to do the fly boy over to the WR and congratulate him. He stopped doing that about 5 weeks ago, he wasnt talking to anyone on the sidelines and was acting like he was pissed off little bitch at the whole team. It was easily noticeable.

Sanchez should pay for his WR's to go to something he's organizing during their offseason. Mostly because its their offseason but also becasue he 50x worse than them and makes 50x more.

Sanchez has had a horrible career. Bad season, where the F have you been? And if my job was predicated on someone else who was absolutely and completely incapable of delivering...yeah, I'd be furious and probably looking for a new company with people who can actually produce and deliver to help me make money.

Yet he is still absolutely one of a LOOOONG list of things wrong with this team.

Agreed. The mind is boggled on how people can believe that the best player on offense being an absolute dog is not something seriously wrong with the offense.

Look at the beginning of the Eagles game. In hindsight, we can see he had checked out by that game.

That's true, i think what jiffy is saying that it's a chicken and egg thing.. and tbh, I see their point, but at the end of the day Holmes took it way to far.. so i agree with you and would ship him out if possible, with the lone exception being bringing in a guy like brees or manning who will right the offense and keep santonio happy.. (which is unlikely).. I don't think he can coexist here with Sanchez any longer
