Post image for Upcoming Dates To Remember

By Rick Allen

With an outstanding weekend of conference championship football behind us and only a few days until the Super Bowl, it is time to lay out what the NFL off season calendar has in store for the year round football fan.

January 28th – Senior Bowl – Kick off at 3pm, NFL Channel- One last chance to watch your favorite college senior or start your own draft depth chart.

January 29th – NFL Pro Bowl – 7pm NBC -  With the addition of Brandon Moore replacing Patriots guard Brian Winters and joining offensive line mates D’ Brickashaw Ferguson and Nick Mangold, watch the Jets O-line lead the AFC Pro Bowl team.

February 5th – Super Bowl XLVI – 6:25 on NBC- New England Patriots vs. New York Giants in Indianapolis.  As if another Super Bowl without the Jets isn’t bad enough, could the matchup be more painful?

February 20th – Teams can begin applying franchise and transition tags to players.   The Jets have an array of underwhelming free agents with a few solid contributors; Jim Leonhard, Bryan Thomas, Plaxico Burress, and Sione Pouha.

February 22-28 – NFL Combine with Live Coverage on the NFL Network and NFL.com.  If you have not taken a few sick days to watch this already, I would highly recommend it.  A great watch for the hard core football fan.

March 5th – Deadline for teams to apply franchise and transition tags.

March 13th – Free agency begins at 4pm.  Let’s hope for a very busy front office for the New York Jets.

March 25-28 – NFL Owners Meetings in Palm Beach, FL.  It doesn’t appear playoff re-seeding will make the agenda this year, but perhaps an additional rule limiting coaches changing teams in the middle of a season might be a hot topic.

March 30-31- Super Regional Combine in Detroit Michigan, this is an invitation only workout opportunity for future NFL draft picks.

Mid April – Off season programs begin.  Each team is allowed 10 OTA’s during the off season.

Late April – The Official 2012 NFL schedule will be announced.

April 26-28 – The 2012 NFL Draft, ESPN/NFL Network – Once again round one will be held Thursday night April 26th in prime time as it has become a huge television event.  Rounds two and three Friday April 27th and rounds four through 7 Saturday April 28th.  Stay tuned to ESPN and NFL Network for full coverage.

Late July – Training camps open round the league.

Early August – The 2012 Pre-season begins.

September 6th – 2012 -NFL season begins at the stadium of the Super Bowl Champion.

As the long wait begins for the 2012 NFL season one thing is certain, it’s a great time to be a fan of the NFL.  Follow all the off season information on www.jetnation.com and football Sundays will back before you know it.

As a side note, the 2012 Hall of Fame class is announced February 4th , with the inductions in Canton on the 4th of August.  I believe Curtis Martin deserves the honor and it will be bestowed upon him this year.  Let’s fill the stands with the green and white and show Curtis Martin how much his effort, performance, and class means to the JetNation.

thanks for this calendar

Very useful guide for getting through the dog days until September

Quick question

Have the Jets announced officially that they will be going to Cortland again for summer training camp. I'm looking forward to making the trip agaion as I did in 2010 for a nice summer upstate overnight.

What, no Wayne Hunter?

Although in all seriousness, in what world did Brick deserve a Pro Bowl nod this season? This was by far his worst season since his rookie year. Clearly a guy who seriously needs his offseason.

They are obligated to go there for 2012 and 2013, since they cancelled last year.

Expect the AFC QB's to come up with mysterious ailments and pull out of the game when they realize that 3/5 of the Jets O-line will be protecting them.

Into the Offseason and the Schedule Ahead

With Super Bowl XLVI in the books, the 2011 NFL season has come to a close. Although the next regular-season game wont be until September, there is still plenty to look forward to for Jets fans this offseason. The Jets have yet to release dates on their own calendar and we’ll get them to you as soon as we have them. Following are dates and events along the league’s timeline in the coming months.

Feb. 22-28 — NFL Scouting Combine

Over 300 prospects for the 2012 draft have been invited to and will participate in the combine workouts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The combine is a proving ground for NFL hopefuls as their on- and off-the-field skills are evaluated.

March 5 — Deadline to Apply Franchise Tag

Each team can apply a franchise tag to any one player who would otherwise become an unrestricted free agent on March 13. This player is then tendered a one-year contract with his current team worth the cap percent average for players at his position. The Jets most recently franchised LB David Harris prior to the 2011 season before the sides negotiated a four-year extension in August.

March 13, 4 p.m. — Free Agency Begins

This is the earliest date that teams can sign free agents. There are two types of free agents: unrestricted and restricted. Unrestricted free agents have accrued four or more seasons in the NFL and are free to negotiate with any of the league’s 32 clubs. Restricted free agents have accrued three seasons in the league and are still subject to right-of-first-refusal or draft choice compensation in favor of their former teams. The right of first refusal gives a team the ability to match an offer made to a player by another franchises.

Here are the potential free agents who played for the Jets this past season :

Unrestricted

QB Mark Brunell

WR Plaxico Burress

K Nick Folk

S Jim Leonhard

QB Kevin O’Connell

S Brodney Pool

DT Sione Pouha

DB Donald Strickland

LB Bryan Thomas

RB LaDainian Tomlinson

OL Rob Turner

~ ~ Restricted

DB Marquice Cole

LB Aaron Maybin

TE Matthew Mulligan

LB Jamaal Westerman

(WR Patrick Turner was eligible to become a RFA but recently signed a contract extension and will return to the Jets for the 2012 season.)

April 16 — Earliest Start for Offseason Conditioning, Phase I

All teams’ nine-week programs will be split into three phases. The Jets’ program will be held at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Phase I will span the first two weeks and is strictly intended for strength, conditioning and rehabilitation. During this time players are not permitted to be on the field with football staff with the exception of strength and conditioning coaches.

April 26-28 — NFL Draft

The first round will once again be a Thursday night primetime affair on April 26. The second and third rounds will be held on Friday and Rounds 4-7 on Saturday. As always, the draft will take place at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Keep an eye out for an official Jets Draft Party near you as the dates approach.

April 30 — Earliest Start for Offseason Conditioning, Phase II

Phase II, lasting three weeks, allows players and coaches to work on the field together. During this time, on-field drills are permitted but contact, helmets and offense vs. defense drills are not.

May 4 — Earliest Start for Rookie Minicamps

The Jets, who have not announced their schedule yet for this year’s rookie minicamp, traditionally have brought their draft choices and undrafted free agents in for the weekend after the draft. All teams can choose this weekend or May 11-13 for their rookie minicamps.

May 21 — Earliest Start for Offseason Conditioning, Phase III

The number of Organized Team Activity periods (OTAs) have been reduced from 14 to 10 in accordance with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement. This will mark the first time that offensive and defensive players can take the field at the same time under guidance of the coaching staff. Players can wear helmets but not pads or shells. Contact is not permitted.

June 4 — Earliest Start for Mandatory Veteran Minicamps

The only week of the offseason that players are required to be present at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center. Similar to OTAs, players can take the field for drills with teammates and coaches, provided there is no contact.

Late July — Training Camps Begin

The Jets will return to SUNY Cortland for their 2012 training camp after spending August 2011 at their training center in Florham Park, N.J. Training camps for all teams no more than 15 days prior to their first scheduled preseason games.
