HERM WILL BE BACK

There's a growing expectation in league circles that Jets owner Woody Johnson will bring back coach Herm Edwards in 2006, and that Edwards will not try to leave for the Chiefs job or any other gig.The Jets have been one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL this year, sputtering to a horrendous 2-9 record. Some thought that the Jets were on the short list of teams to make it to the Super Bowl (we didn't . . . but then again we had the Raiders on ours).

Sure, the loss of quarterback Chad Pennington and his backup Jay Fiedler had a lot to do with the team's struggles. Still, we believe that Herm's mishandling of Pennington's 2004 torn rotator cuff prevented Pennington from being ready for the 2005 season, and it set the stage for a new injury to the same area. But there's reason for hope. The Jets, after all, are one of four teams jockeying for the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2006. The Packers also are 2-9, as are the 49ers. The Texans stand at 1-10.If the Jets "win" the No. 1 pick by losing their next five games and landing ahead of the remaining trio of turds, it'll be the 10-year anniversary of the only other time that the Jets had the first overall pick.

In 1996, they selected USC receiver Keyshawn Johnson. This time around, the Jets most likely would pounce on USC tailback Reggie Bush.So maybe the chant at the team's three remaining home games this season should be "L-O-S-E . . . LOSE, LOSE, LOSE!"
