Terms of the deal weren't immediately available. Pouha was considered the Jets' most important free agent to re-sign. He participated in 60 percent of the team's defensive plays. The 6-foot-3, 325-pound defensive tackle has started 44 games for Rex Ryan on defense over the past three seasons. F.Chowds Posted March 12, 2012 Share Posted March 12, 2012 The New York Jets identified nose tackle Sione Pouha as a "priority" free agent, and they accomplished their goal of keeping him off the open market. The two sides agreed to a three-year contract, according a source. Details weren't immediately available. Pouha, 33, a three-year starter, isn't a dynamic pass rusher, but he's regarded as one of the better run stuffers in the league. He recorded 58 tackles last season, most on the team among the linemen, even though he only played primarily on first and second down. He also made one sack, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. He participated in 60 percent of the team's defensive plays last season and has started 44 games for Rex Ryan on defense over the past three seasons. The long-term deal is a bit risky because of his age, but Pouha got a late start in the NFL and hasn't accumulated as much wear and tear as other interior linemen. Because he served a religious mission while in college, he didn't get to the league until he was 26. He was a third-round pick of the Jets in 2005. It was important to retain the 6-foot-3, 325-pound Pouha because his backup, second-year nose tackle Kenrick Ellis, isn't ready to step into a full-time role. Ellis, a third-round pick from Hampton (Va.), appeared in only five games last season and made little impact. Pouha, a captain last season, also is a positive locker-room presence. That, no doubt, factored into his value, considering the Jets' locker-room issues last season. The Jets still have 10 unrestricted free agents, but they're not expected to re-sign any before the start of free agency. The Jets have taken care of their top priority by resigning Pouha before becoming a free agent. Why he kept bashing Kenrick Ellis this past year is a mystery to me. They guy was a project and very raw, but every week he would point out he wasn't active and some other choice words. Pouha's three-year deal was wrapped up Monday morning (financial details not immediately available), about 29 hours before he would've hit the open market as an unrestricted free agent. Quick thoughts on the move: 1. Pouha was their No. 1 priority in free agency -- among their own players, anyway -- and they got him back without having to use the franchise tag ($7.9 million). 2. He isn't a flashy player in terms of style or production, but Pouha is a premier run stuffer -- a vital cog for any 3-4 defense. If a 3-4 defense doesn't have a nose tackle that can occupy blockers at the point of attack, it doesn't have a chance. Yes, the Jets dropped to 13th in run defense, but many of the yards came on the perimeter. They still were effective inside the tackles, in large part because of Pouha. 3. Sure, his age (33) is a concern, but we're not talking about a high-mileage player here. Pouha got a late start in the NFL (he was a 26-year-old rookie) and he has started only three years, appearing in just 60 percent of the defensive snaps last season. Barring a major injury, he should remain effective for the length of this contract. 4. They had to get this done because second-year NT Kenrick Ellis isn't ready for a full-time role. This will allow Ellis to grow under Pouha without having to feel the pressure of being a major contributor. 5. Pouha is a positive influence in the locker room, demonstrating accountability and a willingness to help young players. Leadership will be important as the Jets move forward, attempting to heal after a season filled with dissension. In short, he's good people. 6. The Pouha deal means three of the Jets' six captains last season have made contract news this offseason -- i.e. Mark Sanchez's extension and Santonio Holmes' guarantee. He has no clue if this is true or not. How about, they signed a home grown talent who is really F'ing good because he's really F'ing good. NT isnt an easy position to play.
