The signing of former Dolphins S Yeremiah Bell has fueled debate on whether the Jets are leaving themselves vulnerable because they have too many "in-the-box" safeties and no "coverage" safeties. Bell and LaRon Landry are the projected starters, with Eric Smith coming off the bench.
Statistically, there's reason to be concerned, as Bell and Smith were among the worst in the league last season in pass coverage, according to the stats-based web site ProFootballFocus.com. Landry never has been known for his coverage skills, and now he's coming off an Achilles'-tendon injury.
Here's a statistical breakdown by PFF, including safeties that played at least 25 percent of their team's defensive snaps (87 qualifiers):
Player Comp Pct/Rank Yards/Rank Passer rating/Rank Bell 65.0 (t56th) 333 (64th) 105.5 (63rd) Landry 71.4 (t74th) 159 (20th) 109.0 (68th) Smith 66.7 (t59th) 533 (86th) 97.2 (54th)
Player Targets/completions Bell 40/26 Landry 21/15 (Played in only 8 games) Smith 54/36

This is scary. Our pass defense was atrocious last year with two safeties who struggled vs. the pass.
Oh wait... no it wasn't.
As long as we don't get burned to a crisp by TE's I don't give a sh** about our safeties. Hit some people and don't fall down in coverage (I'm talking to you Eric Smith), and we'll be fine.
sheesh, I'm a doosh.

If Landry is healthy he might not cover well but he will make catching the ball over the middle a very unpleasant experience.
CBPOY.
He'll then get injured in 2013, sign with Miami in 2014, win CBPOY again, and everyone will say it's because Miami knew what to do with him.

Regardless of the argument he's posing, it has become quite amusing to wonder what negative spin will Cimini find to present to us each day.

If this team had a nasty pass rush (when only rushing 4) this would be a much different story. I love Mo and Coples potentials but still missing that feared OLB.
That said, this team is not going to solve all of its problems in one off season.

He's probably Googled his name to find out who reads him.

The goal is to get to the QB, with Revis an Cro on the outsides, force the pass to the middle of the field. Same as always with Rex's D, except past struggles aside, we did upgrade at Safety.
Landry is an upgrade over Smith while he is healthy but Bell is the same as Smith just older and we didn't upgrade at FS at all. All 3 combined have around 15 INTs for their careers. I'm not sure how they're going to use all 3 and I don't see Bell starting over Smith right away if at all.

Who starts doesn't matter. Rex's defense is situational. The most important thing we added was size and speed to the middle of the field. Old stats don't matter to me. I'll take Landry, Bell, Smith, plus the rookies over the Smith, Pool, scrubs any day.
All the griping and concern from people, it's not as though this offseason was ripe with safety talent.

Never said it was, just said we didn't improve FS but I agree that I'd rather have the S now then last year.
I'm also bored hate baseball and basketball and like debating and you're really easy to start a debate with.
You could argue over the color of blue.
Past stats are very important when it's been 4 or 5 years.

Saying how many INTs they have isnt important. They've never played in this defense with Revis and Cro on the outside. It's not like our Def ever has a lot of Turnovers anyway.
We'll be fine. Reacting to Cimini articles is the quickest way to fool yourself into thinking otherwise.
