Cancerio Holmes? Santonio Carcinoma?

http://profootballta...ork-in-the-nfl/

If the Jets are alternating between Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow at quarterback this season, their No. 1 receiver thinks that’s a recipe for failure.

Santonio Holmes, who was an unhappy camper with Sanchez last season, suggested in an interview on NFL Network that he won’t be happy this season if he’s going back and forth between catching passes from Sanchez and catching passes from Tebow. Asked by Andrew Siciliano whether a two-quarterback system can work in the NFL, Holmes answered, “No.”

“I don’t think so,” Holmes continued. “Because you have to allow one quarterback to get in the rhythm of a game. And it starts from the preparation of practice.

Holmes said Sanchez needs to know he’s the man, and it would be bad for Sanchez’s development as a player to put him in a position where he’s looking over his shoulder and wondering whether he’s going to get benched in favor of Tebow if he throws an interception.

“Making mistakes early in the game to finishing the game at the end, you don’t change a guy out just because he has a few mistakes early in a game,” Holmes said. “So I think coming into the season we have a lot to expect from Sanchez.”

Holmes was benched in the final game of the 2011 season when he complained bitterly about the offense, but he suggested in the interview today that if anything, he showed commendable patience in holding his tongue until the end of last season. Holmes indicated that his frustrations had been mounting all year, and that he refrained from complaining early in the season even though he had just 22 catches in the Jets’ seven games before their bye week.

“I didn’t say anything about last season until Week 17,” Holmes said. “It hurt to play seven games and only have 20 catches.”

This year, Holmes said, he and Sanchez have worked well together in the offseason, and he expects to get more than three catches a game. But if it doesn’t work that way, it may be tough to keep Holmes happy. No matter who’s playing quarterback.

I watched. I wish he was half as consistent with his effort on the field as he is with his BS off of it

Sounds like he's firmly behind Sanchez as his QB. What's the issue?

I was being semi-facetious (if fully annoying) with the cancer references. I actually agree with him on his two-QB points.

Because he knows he's about to play in a two-QB offense and yet he's saying he doesn't think it can work.

Hate to point out the obvious but clearly Santonio Holmes as a #1 receiver is another thing that can't work.

Yeah?

Anyone else have doubts about a two-QB system?

I'm not too sure the Jets are going to be running such a system, and I think Santonio throwing his support behind Sanchez is the politically correct thing to do.

Don't see the issue outside of, "I don't like Santonio and he said something, so it must be bad."

They gave Jeremy Kerley snaps at QB last year. Running the wildcat isn't exactly platooning the position.

If they do opt to run an actual two-QB system, I think Santonio has a point. Don't you?

100%. Nobody thinks the two-QB system works. But, when you're a career malcontent who spent the majority of last season sulking and underperforming, it's probably wise not to point at the offense you're about to run and say that it will fail. I commend him for his honesty, but if Holmes had any intention of coming in and proving that he's learned anything from last season, he's doing an awful job expressing that. That he thinks people are upset with him solely for the "one bad day" that was the Dolphins debacle is as frightening as it is revealing. If we had some flickering hope that Rex was getting through to Holmes behind the scenes, I think these comments pretty much snuff those hopes out.

As for the offense, this happy talk from Rex that Tebow isn't here to take snaps away from Mark is high comedy. The guy is a QB, he's always been a QB, and he's said that he's always gonna be a QB. If the Jets wanted a 6'4", 250 lb. slow, white HB, they could have traded for Peyton Hillis. He's as much a TE/HB/Hback as the rugby player is at this point, probably less so.

So basically, there was no way Santonio could win here.

I thought the big problem last year was undermining the QB. In these quotes, he seems to be backing up Mark rather strongly. As far as I can tell, that's a good thing. If he embraced this so-called two-QB system, he'd once again be disrespecting Sanchez. No? What was he supposed to say?

We'll see how this QB mess they bought into plays out. I think it's always been all about Sanchez. If he plays well enough, we won't see much of Tebow at QB at all. If he plays poorly, we'll get extended looks from Tebow. Holmes seems to be publicly rooting for the former. I am, too. I just don't see the problem.

Meanwhile, I think Timmy will make a mean upman on the punt team. I'm sure he was great there in high school.
