Jets to acquire Rams Jason Smith

Jets likely will have Jason Smith for one year only

Posted by Mike Florio on August 27, 2012, 11:25 PM EDT

How disappointed were the Jets in right tackle Wayne Hunter?  Sufficiently disappointed to send him to St. Louis for an equally disappointing second overall pick in the draft, who also plays tackle.

By swapping Hunter for Jason Smith, the Jets actually will shell out more money.  Smith reworked his rookie deal earlier this year to reduce his salary to $4 million, fully guaranteed.  Hunter, on the other hand, is due to make only $2.45 million, also fully guaranteed.

But while the Rams can keep Hunter around for 2013 (and 2015) if he overachieves in his new surroundings, the Jets have Smith for only one season, barring an extension.

Smith is due to receive a roster bonus of $11.25 million on the first day of the league year.  The entire 2013 year voids if he participates in 31 percent of the snaps.  As a source with knowledge of the contract explained the deal to PFT, the 2013 year will be gone one way or another, and the franchise tag can’t be used on Smith next season.

So if he plays well, he’ll hit the open market.  If he doesn’t, the Jets won’t want to keep him around.

They definitely didn’t want to keep Hunter around.  The fact that they finally moved him now underscores their failure to have a better plan at the right tackle position in the offseason.

From http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000055526/article/jets-trade-wayne-hunter-to-rams-for-jason-smith

The Rams initiated the trade, a source told Breer and NFL.com and NFL Network's Steve Wyche. Their pursuit of Hunter was influenced by offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer, who coached the tackle for five seasons in New York. Shottenheimer used Hunter as a jumbo tight end and swing tackle and believes he'd do well with a fresh start.

Insert Schottenheimer joke here, although it's really not a bad move for the Rams.

A quick look at a couple Rams boards and they don't seem too happy about not getting an additional pick. A few called him quite the mauler in the run game but a liability in pass protection.

Hunters mind was gone... douchebag fans and vultures in the media crushed his spirit. he was a waste of a roster spot. There's simply no way Smith can be worse and I don't care about the 1.5 million more they have to pay.

Good trade Tanny.

Im sure Sanchez will be happy that he's quite the mauler in the run game when Mario Williams is dancing the Macarena on his forehead in week 1. AYE!!!!

Agree with what you are saying. Rams fans being pissed about not getting an additional pick makes them sound about as irrational and disconnected with the real value of their players as Jets fans are.

FYI Eric Winston sign with KC for 4 years 22M....5.5M per. Just a FYI.

LMFAO

This is interesting. There must be some kind of catch here, no way they can guarantee that he's in on 31 percent of snaps right?

They used a # 2 overall pick on him. If we had used a # 2 pick on Wayne Hunter and gotten nothing back for him in a trade, we'd be making the same comments.

Ok hold on a second. We picked up a guy that is going to cost us $4mm guaranteed, and makes $11.25mm due on the first day of the season? Am I missing something here, or did we just trade away a cheaper, albeit useless dude, for another useless dude who is almost 7x more expensive? Is there the ability to cut Smith before week1 and resign him on week 2? How otherwise could this possibly work? I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but I'm really having trouble making any sense of this.

As usual, nice job Florio. The Rams can keep Hunter around for 2013 and 2015, but not 2014?

I don't see why everybody is hung up on this voiding clause. There is no way on God's green earth the Jets were going to pay him that roster bonus, so the guy is getting cut and is a FA for 2013. The Jets will have the inside track on resigning him if he fits Sparano's system, which he might. Having a more athletic guy seems to suit the man blocking scheme whereas you need your smarter guys to know all the roles for zone blocking. This move isn't a slam dunk, but the Jets just got the #2 overall pick from 3 years ago. They guy may have some talent. Also, if he has truly been a mauler in the run game and a liability when passing he sounds like a nice short yardage TE, no? Rams fans weren't going to put up with that out of #2 overall.

What do the Rams think they'll be getting with Wayne Hunter?? They should have just said take Smith, we're fine.

They know exactly what they're getting: a backup OT with no health issues for $2.5 million whom they can keep for a couple of years if they want in exchange for a failed first round OT with concussion issues who would have cost them $4 million this year. The reality is that Brian Schottenheimer seems to have stuck it to his old team.

The. Schottenhiemer. Connection.

See above.

Converted TE, good speed and athleticism. He has good measurables.

Wishful thinking... maybe there is a slight chance that Smith realizes that his NFL career is nearly done and turns things around? I haven't seen much of him at the pro level, but isn't he supposed to be a decent run blocker? At the time he was drafted I thought he was mid to high first round value with a pretty high ceiling. Maybe they can get him to be a decent player like they have with Maybin.

There's a slight chance that I win the next Megamillions lottery, too.

Mike Tannenbaum has never met a contract so bad he couldn't throw more bad money after it.

+1

An exchange of sh*tty, soon to be cut backup tackles now qualifies as "sticking it"?

This move doesn't really make sense but it's not a disaster either. Deck chairs, man. Deck chairs.

Brian Schottenhiemer is the GM for the Rams?

Good to know.

We're so lucky to have Bills fans to tell us whats going on. It almost makes up for Garb's lamentable absence recently.

While both seem to have a ton of knowledge on how to build a franchise and why the Jets suck so bad...I'll take garb strictly based on osmosis.

The only way Schitty stuck it to the Jets is by being here for 6 years. The Jets didn't want Hunter on the team any more this year, never mind any future years, so what the hell does the contract length matter? The Jets clearly decided it was worth $1.5 million to get rid of Hunter and replace him with a guy who might have a higher upside. While I don't necessarily get the point in going with someone who's going to cost more money, trying to act like this is some brilliant coup pulled by the Rams over the Jets is certainly grasping at straws. Be honest, are you just butthurt because the Jets already turned around the career of your team's 2009 draft bust?

Exactly...the former #2 overall pick just has to play a small role here rather than live up to the expectations of a #2 pick. That's something that was not going to happen in St. Louis.

This has cleary been a bad offseason for Tanny. Unfortunate that he so screwed up the free agency period that it overshadows his best draft in a while.

But there's one person that can make everyone forget that--Sanchez. If by some football miracle he has a good season, things will look much better.

Also probably his best individual FA signing in Landry. He's never signed a FA with that much upside and pedigree for such a low price.

Yep. That was a great signing, but it'll be overshadowed because of the Hunter mess, Sanchez extension, and Tebow trade. But if Sanchez plays well, no one will care about all that.

Addition by subtraction?

Yeah. Hunter needed to go.

Once Hunter gave up a 4th quarter sack to a future UPS employee and then got into a shouting match with stadium fans, it was over.

If the Jets cut him they'd have $2.45 mil in dead cap space and still would need to sign a backup OLineman that could play T. They ended up doing a trade and spending $1.45 mil more they they already would have to pay.

So we brought in a garbage player so we can try to make him a good, solid, serviceable Tackle... so that next year he can become someone elses starter, or stay our expensive garbage? Awesome. I miss Hunter already.

Tannenbaum, tell me this was a decision made by more than looking at where the guy was drafted.
