Saban: Respect the Jets

Coach Nick Saban made it clear that he does not want his Dolphins to underestimate the 3-10 Jets on Sunday.

Usually, there's too much posturing, too much fake inflation for inspiration and not enough Aretha Franklin when the word ''respect'' is getting thrown around.

But some Dolphins players really did think San Diego showed an insulting lack of it for the Dolphins on Sunday (and CBS analyst Steve Tasker agreed). Dolphins coach Nick Saban made it clear the Dolphins better have it for the New York Jets this week.

Stressing that the Dolphins' three-game winning streak didn't come from looking too far ahead or back, Saban said, ``Every team in the league can beat any team at any time. We need to have the proper respect for everybody that we play. The team we're playing is certainly not a team we've been dominating lately.''

They're also not the team that swept the Dolphins last year and plodded to a 17-7 victory Sept. 18, when the season was young and running back Curtis Martin didn't look old.

Martin is out for the season with a knee injury that ended the 32-year-old's consecutive-games streak Sunday at 119 and 1,000-yard-rushing-seasons streak at 10. The Jets quarterbacks who have taken snaps this season outnumber their wins, four to three.

THE RIGHT DIRECTION

Yet the New Yorkers got enough moving in the right direction enough to beat Oakland 26-10 on Sunday, albeit a dysfunctional Raiders team with inexperienced Marques Tuiasosopo at QB.

Meanwhile, the Dolphins have punched out three consecutive wins, the past two while overcoming a 21-point deficit and a road opponent seen by most as clearly superior that got off to a strong start.

' `Who we are, not what we've done' is what I always say,'' Saban said. ``That works when things aren't going well. But it also works when things do go well. This is the identity we're trying to create; this is how we play. The team that we play next is just the team that we have an opportunity to do that against. I think everybody should have the proper respect for every team we play.

``Maybe there are some occasions in the past where we should learn those lessons.''

Saban didn't give any indication he was speaking of San Diego, but some of his players would point to the Chargers as a lesson in that.

During the telecast, Tasker stated several times that the Chargers' going for it on not one but two first-half fourth-down plays indicated they felt the Dolphins' offense would remain impotent throughout the day.

But 7-0 with San Diego in charge became 7-3, then 20-7 with the Dolphins dominating.

The win kept open Dolphins' paper-thin chances for an AFC East title, something that didn't go unnoticed in Sunday's locker room. That possibility goes away if New England dumps Tampa Bay in Foxboro, Mass., on Saturday.

''Everybody wants to talk about standings; now we can get into the playoff and this and that and all of that, but that's not what we should be thinking about,'' Saban said. ``Focus on what is right in front of you. Don't worry about anything else, because if you don't take care of that business, then you are worrying about something that doesn't really exist and is what we can control.''

we've had that problem with under estimating teams this year. Even though before the last 3 wins we were 3-7 we seemed to think we were to good for some teams such as Cleveland, we played a lot lazy, sloppy football.

Hopefully we've corrected this.

Too bad the Patriots play on Saturday. If they win the Dolphins may be seriously let down as the Patsies will clinch the AFC East with a win.

Do you guys think you would go after Pete Carroll at USC? The word is out here he maybe getting some NFL offers. As brother Nappy Roots has already said, we have been caught in the same thing looking ahead. On Sunday at Qualcomm is was crazy loud for the Dolphins, probably about 20-25,000 fans there. I kept seeing them come in 4-5 a car.

I feel for you guys losing Curtis Martin, he is a class act.

Nick Saban makes me wish we had a real head coach, instead of a cheerleader. Saban is another Belichick waiting to happen. The Dolphins WILL win a Super Bowl under his watch.

I tend to agree with this.

Saban was a great signing by the Phins.

Keep in mind, he is learning a hell of a lot this season and will only get better.

But I watched the Phins/Chargers game and that was one well-coached football team, on both sides of the ball.

Look out if he finds a real QB.

I wanted Saban after I saw him whoop up on Oklahoma in the Championship game two years ago. The man may be a tool, but he can coach. The Phins are in good hands with him.

Hey 57, does he remind you of anyone?

The difference is that Belichick never brought me a national championship. Therefore, he's a boring, heartless piece of sh*t that only succeeded because of his coordinators, while Saban has the intelligence of Vince Lombardi and the charm of Frank Sinatra.

Troll, you are smarter than that.

Where the hell do you think Saban learned everything that he has going for him?

Herm Edwards?

You might want to wait until he has a winning season in the NFL before you sell your soul to get him.

6-8 isn't exactly burning down the house, especially in a devision with just one team over .500.

I know the Herm hating is on high here at JN, but if he goes I hope we are at least looking at someone who has the NFL success Herm has given to our team.

BZ, if Hermy was coaching the Phins this year they would be ahead of the Texans for the #1 pick.

BTW, did you see the offensive and defensive gamesplans that Saban employed against the Chargers on Sunday?

Hermy can only dream of coming up with something like that.

2004:

San Diego Chargers | W | 34-28

AFC Wildcard Game: won 20 - 17 at San Diego Chargers

Yeah... he must have had two good dreams last year.

The only dreams Hermy has are wet ones.

Did Hermy plan on having a rookie kicker miss a chip-shot game-winning FG as part of his gameplan?

Man, keeping you on one point is like keeping Brady out of a hand bag commercial.

So, were you dead wrong or just mortally wounded wrong?

Every time that you bring this up, you conveniently forget that this game was over except for the stupid roughing the passer penalty by Barton. The Jets controlled that game and deserved to win it. If you wan't to talk about "planning", let's discuss the crafty utilization of the never seen before and never seen since "Tuck Rule".

The obvious difference between Herm and Saban (other than the fact that one of them is a moron) is that Saban took over a 4-12 team that was in absolute shambles, while Herm took over a playoff-ready team. If you can't already see that Saban is world's better than Herman Edwards, then you are completely blind. TX, is right. If Herm were coaching the Dolphins, they'd be in a tight race with the Texans right now. And AJ Feeley would probably be their starting quarterback, since they gave up a draft pick to get him, and Herm and Bradway don't cut draft picks no matter how useless they are.
