Lions' losing ways leave Detroit fans revolted, revolting

CINCINNATI | While the city of Detroit prepares to host Super Bowl XL on Feb. 5, Lions fans are rising up to protest their losing team.

Detroit radio station WDFN-AM (1130) has organized an "Angry Fan March" for Sunday. WDFN is urging fans to join sports talk show host Sean Baligian in a march around Ford Field prior to the Lions' final home game of the season against the Bengals. Kickoff is 4:05 p.m.

An advertisement on the WDFN.com Web site calls for Lions fans to "show your feelings" in a peaceful way.

"WDFN salutes angry Lions fans and your freedom of speech," the ad reads. "Detroit and WDFN love the Lions, but we need change. We want a winner. We're mad, and sick and tired of losing.

"Dress up, make signs, come up with some creative chants, but don't be nasty and obscene. Show the Lions you want a winner. We want a calm and fun protest that Detroit can be proud of."

WDFN held a contest, asking fans to create billboard slogans. The winning listener billboard will go up by Saturday at the intersection of I-75 and Gratiot Avenue.

The Lions own a 20-57 record since Matt Millen was appointed team president and CEO on Jan. 9, 2001 by owner William Clay Ford.

Millen fired Detroit's third-year head coach Steve Mariucci after the Lions' 27-7 Thanksgiving Day loss to Atlanta, and replaced him with defensive coordinator Dick Jauron.

"They're a team that's scrambling, trying to find their identity a little bit," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said.

The Lions anticipate the atmosphere of a road game.

"It'll probably be ugly," Detroit wide receiver Roy Williams said. "I know the fans are frustrated, but it can't be bad forever."
