if you look at the coaching change, giving him 2 years to learn Sparano's system is probably a safe call. No upside in throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

In this scenario, what is the "bathwater" that we're throwing out, exactly?

This is like having a cat with leukemia.

here's a question if Tanny picked Mark, do we trust him to pick the next one? Or are we expecting Woody to clean house and _then_ pick another QB?

it will happen, just not until after 2013.

So you're saying we should throw out the bathwater (which is the GM, who's getting fired because he drafted a terrible QB), but not the baby (which is the QB who's so terrible he's getting a GM fired).

This is like having a cat with leukemia.

The Reasons to Stick With Mark Sanchez

The Jets won't make a quarterback change and we take a look at why

You get the feeling that the Jets might have dodged a little bit of a bullet this week with the arrival of Sandy. With the arrival of a real disaster, there's no time or inclination to spend much time screaming about a sports one so Sunday's blowout loss to the Dolphins and the team's subsequent decision to stick with Mark Sanchez at quarterback were merely acknowledged. That's exactly as it should be and not just because of the massive gulf of importance between storms and football. The other reason is because it is very easy to understand why the Jets aren't making a change at quarterback even though the bye week would be the perfect time to switch gears to Tim Tebow. We've laid out a few of the reasons why the Jets have decided to keep rolling with Sanchez, along with counterpoints to each of them should you feel the need to fuel a movement to get the Jets to move on from their former golden boy as he scuffles the way through his fourth year.

1. It's Not All His Fault - This is something that comes up often when Rex Ryan and Tony Sparano talk about Sanchez's play and you certainly can't fault its honesty. The line has had its struggles, the running game has been quieter than anyone might have liked and Stephen Hill, Mike Tannenbaum's big second-round pick to help the passing game, can't catch the ball. This certainly isn't a case of Sanchez driving a fully loaded Ferrari into the embankment. No one would blame Martin Scorsese for making a bad movie while using a cast and crew made up of third graders.

Counterpoint - Quarterbacks have raised the level of play among their teammates plenty of times in the history of the NFL and they continue to do it today. Sanchez isn't solely to blame for what's gone wrong, but there's not much positive to be said about a quarterback who can't succeed unless conditions are absolutely perfect.

2. Progress - Another constant line from the coaches is that Sanchez is showing improvement at this or that part of his game. It usually goes hand in hand with it not all being his fault.

Counterpoint - There's no statistical evidence that Sanchez is getting better. You'd be hard-pressed to sell claims that watching him play leaves a different impression.

3. Stubborn Rex - If Ryan pulls the plug now, he knows that there will be no way to go back to Sanchez and no way to get back whatever he loses in terms of credibility after such full-throated support of Sanchez over the years. Call it loyalty if you prefer a more positive spin, but there's no question that Rex would be more exposed without Sanchez out front to take hits for him.

Counterpoint - Good coaches don't worry about possible credibility loss (they don't overpromise at every turn either) because they know when changes have to be made. The less charitable spin is that Rex is using Sanchez as protection for himself.

4. The Tebow Conundrum - Putting Tebow into the starting lineup and watching him pull off another winning streak like last year would make it very difficult for the Jets to enter next season (barring Peyton Manning hitting the market again) without any quarterback other than Tebow as their starter. Like plenty of others, Ryan and Sparano don't seem to think that's a viable long-term strategy and that might be pushing them to resist a player who was obviously forced upon them in the first place.

Counterpoint - You aren't winning. Change that now and worry about the rest later.

People who think Rex is JUST being stubborn need to think again.

As bad as Sanchez has been, he does not have a better option than Mark at the QB position. Period. Heck if AARP's finest Brunell was on the team he might have a better shot of starting that any of the backup QB's we have got!

this article ignores the fact that Sanchez is due a huge amount of money in 2013. he gets this season and next, whether we agree with it or not.

Woody, Tanny and Rex picked Sanchez.

They all went out to Cali pre draft to meet Sanchez and Woody was said to have fallen in love with him.

if the Jets want to fix QB in the draft, they need to go like 1-15. the difference between picking a Chad at 15 or a Sanchez at 5 and picking an Eli at 1 is huge. You want to be at 1 or as close to it. Anything else, it's a huge gamble.

My posts have to get worse, so they can get better.

there's no one comin' out in the next draft that will " fix " our QB dept.

mark will be our qb again next season unless we make a trade for a qb or we sign a qb in free agency.

Three ways to use Tim Tebow better

I know what you’re thinking.

Everyone who reads the AFC East blog wants to know how the New York Jets will use better Tim Tebow better, right ?

The popular backup quarterback has been a virtual non-factor offensively in the first half of the season. Tebow’s Wildcat package has been a bust both on the ground and through the air.New York’s brain trust had the bye week to figure this out. Jets head coach Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Tony Sparano vowed before the bye that New York would increase Tebow’s production in the second half of the season.

The AFC East blog has three suggestions for Tebow and the Jets :

No. 1 : Use Tebow at running back

It sounds like a gimmick. But putting Tebow, a career quarterback, at tailback could actually work. The Jets lack depth at running back. New York has a pair of injured running backs in Bilal Powell (shoulder) and Joe McKnight (ankle). Shonn Greene is the unquestioned starter but he occasionally needs a breather. Tebow could add to the pile with several carries a game. He’s a strong runner between the tackles.

No. 2 : Don’t be afraid to play Tebow at QB

I’m not condoning benching Mark Sanchez. The leash is short, but Sanchez probably deserves at least another week or two to show he can turn the Jets around. But New York should not be afraid to let Tebow run the base offense. He comes in for Sanchez several plays a game anyway. Why not let him run New York’s usual plays instead of the gimmick Wildcat?

No. 3 : Tebow the fullback

The Jets have used Tebow a little at H-back, tight end and split him out wide. But none of it worked. Sanchez either refuses to throw to Tebow, even if he’s open, or hits Tebow in the helmet. The Jets should use Tebow more at fullback. He could be a physical blocker and catch passes out of the backfield. This might sound a bit out of left field, but what the Jets were doing with Tebow before didn’t work. Everything should be on the table.

I'm more and more convinced this franchise is too ****y...sorry...fickle...to handle a rookie QB that isn't a special prospect. Go young veterans like the Raiders until one of them happens to make us the #1 overall pick the year Peyton Manning Jr. comes out. It's the only way.

Heads or tails, it won’t be long before the Jets are staring at one of their recent player personnel mistakes when Leon Washington takes his place around the Seahawks’ goal line to field a kickoff.Washington represents a glaring symbol of the growing list of valuable, talented, high-character players the Jets have cast aside in recent years, compromising the product they will have on the field tomorrow against the Seahawks. It is the price of doing business in sports as a general manager, making difficult personnel decisions. In all sports, teams cut or trade players who go on to excel with their next team, sometimes even coming back to haunt their former team — as Washington well may do.

Some general managers are better than others,& the fact is Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum has not had a good last few years, leaving his team short on explosive offensive talent and its defensive depth toilet-tissue thin.Washington, sixth in the NFL with a 29.1-yard kickoff return average, was universally missed when the Jets traded him to Seattle in 2010 for a fourth-round draft pick they used on fullback John Conner.Conner, whose nickname is “The Terminator,’’ was terminated when the Jets quietly released him last month.Last Sunday at MetLife Stadium, Jerricho Cotchery was making critical catches for his new team, the Steelers, in their win over the Giants. Like Washington, Cotchery is another significant role player the Jets let go in the last few years. All Cotchery was for the Jets was Mark Sanchez’s most dependable receiver and a solid rock of maturity in their locker room. If he were still on the Jets’ roster today, he would be their No. 1 receiver. What’s next ? Tackle Wayne Hunter, whom the Jets released and was signed by the Rams earlier this season, pancaking Mo Wilkerson when the Jets play in St. Louis next Sunday ? In the case of Washington’s departure, his contract was coming due soon, which was, along with the fact he was rehabilitating from a broken leg, the reason the Jets traded him.

Washington said when the trade was going down, coach Rex Ryan told him, “Look, Leon, we have to pay a bunch of guys, Nick Mangold, David Harris, Darrelle Revis.’’

“It’s a business, so I understand it,’’ Washington said.

The Jets have done well at the kickoff return position in Washington’s absence w/ the drafting of Joe McKnight, a talented returner. But McKnight has been injury prone and in fact,is questionable for tomorrow’s game because of a left ankle sprain.Jets special teams coach Mike Westhoff said he was “not involved in’’ the decision to trade Washington.“There were lots of extenuating circumstances — injuries and contracts, which I am not apprised of,’’ he said. “There’s a big picture and we all have to be able to fit into it.“On the other side, there is the selfish side that says, ‘I want this guy.’ The two of them don’t always coincide.’’Jets safety and special teams leader Eric Smith echoed the sentiment of everyone who played with Washington.“Leon was a great guy, a good friend and guy you like to have here, but [the decision to trade him] is above my pay grade,’’ he said. “He’s definitely still got it.

It’s going to take a lot of people running to the ball to make the tackle because a lot of times Leon makes the first guy miss.’’If Washington makes enough of his former teammates miss tomorrow, it will accentuate how big a miss management made evaluating his value to the Jets.“I wish we still had him around,” tight end Dustin Keller said. “It is hard to replace guys like that. Guys like that, besides the gift that he has, he was a good locker room guy.’’Left guard Brandon Moore agreed.“You need players like that on your team,’’ he said. And these Jets do not have enough of them.As one disillusioned Jets veteran who played with Washington said of the growing list of key players management continues to weed out: “Believe me, we as players look at the same thing and wonder.’’
