Your anti-Rex bias is coloring your views here. IMHO, if Rex were to be fired and any number of these candidates were to land a GM job with another franchise, Rex would likely be on their short list of head coaching candidates.

Rex is staying. Woody would have worded Press release different if new GM can axe Rex.
He would have said 'no personell moves until new GM hired and we will then evaluate all positions'

The Jets will lose talent due to salary cap next year. 9 wins would be a very optimistic view, as we sit here.

They're not really going to be losing much talent because of the cap. The problem comes when trying to acquire new talent. Just cutting Jason Smith and Bart Scott saves them nearly $20M. Calvin Pace is another $8.5M. Eric Smith is $3M. They have a little room to maneuver.

You may be right, but I just don't see that.

Rex was considered a candidate for years before we hired him, and he kept getting passed over every time.

Now, the main concerns have not only been proven true about Rex, but there are many, many unattractive qualities he brings to an organization.

I just don't see him as a real candidate.

I was listening one day to Philly talk radio, and Rex came up as a possibly available replacement for Reid, and it was universally rejected, strongly.

Woody says No Mas and finally buries Giants hatchet for benefit of Jets? If so, Kudos to Woody :)

Rex has 2 yrs left on his contract. Keeping him on a 1 yr probabtionary period is not going to be a killer for any new GM because he'll fire Rex with 1 yr left on deal and no big financial loss.

Also, if there is cap issues in 2013 cauing a rebuilding year, don't you want Rex running that team rather than the new HC who would likely start off with a losing season because of rebuilding?

The New York Jets released a statement on behalf of recently terminated General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.  The statement appears below:

Statement from Mike Tannenbaum

I want to thank Woody and his entire family for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime — serving as the General Manager of the New York Jets for seven years.

I am incredibly grateful to have been a part of rebuilding a winning tradition for Jets fans over the past 15 years. My days with Coach Parcells through my years as General Manager of the team that went to back-to-back AFC Championship games have been the fulfillment of a dream I have had since I was a little kid and I’ll always be grateful to Woody, the two head coaches, Rex and Eric, as well as all of the players, staff and the entire organization for this opportunity.

While of course it is disappointing to not achieve the ultimate goal of winning a championship, I am incredibly proud of our overall winning record and success. I feel very fortunate to have been the general manager who drafted cornerstone players during a period that yielded four playoff victories and 22 Pro Bowl appearances.

I appreciate that it is rare for someone to stay with one organization with such a wide range of responsibilities for so many years. My time with the Jets will always be special to me and my family and it has prepared me well for whatever comes next.

There are champions on this team that haven’t been crowned yet. I am confident that the base we’ve established will allow the New York Jets to continue a winning tradition for years to come and I wish everyone in the organization the best of luck.

Jets fans are discussing this move and the Jets other possible replacement options in the Jets Nation Forum.

I like Rex.

As a coach he is like a draft prospect with great measurables, but drug convictions. It's like you can't coach speed. I'm sure there is a GM somewhere that is thinking that he can reigh Rex in, pair him with a solid offensive coach and make some serious hay. OTOH, there are plenty of respected guys that will have a do not touch grade on him.

Like your friends.

What you have to ask yourself from a coach is, can he lead? rex has shown to be lacking in those qualities.

Yeah, Hard Knocks was great and funny, but that is not what makes a head coach

This makes no sense. The problem with the Rex-Tanny dynamic is that Tanny lacks a personnel background and Rex is a bad talent evaluator because he thinks he can coach up anyone on defense and has no clue about offense. So Tanny didn't have anyone worthy to rely on.

Based on who the Jets seek to interview (Gamble from Niners, Ross from Giants), they want pure personnel guys as a GM. Thus, that GM won't be relying on Rex on draft day.

I don't disagree, but he also is a hell of a defensive coach and took an absolutely sh*t QB to the AFC championship game. It's possible that he can't do it, but he is the one that took that team to those games. Nobody else was carrying them. He may not be the kind of guy that can sustain leadership, but to say he can't lead is kind of dumb.

Umm Rexey has major issues with pressers, in game management, lacks any clue on anything offensive related mon and imo an overrated DC to boot. Yea GM 'swill stand in line
to work with this guy. And Yes a Good GM does seek input from Good HC's

He can be a DC for somneone. Does not mean I should want him as my HC. We have seen far too much askew

Ya scott my take also.
My biggest problem is no player fears making mistakes. Vets know they can be equal or even a LITTLE less talented and they will keep job over a younger player.
NFL HCs need to be cut throat and willing to play non famous players over seasoned vet sif it improves team 2 %. NFL is that compettitive.

I like the Phil Simms/Tuna story to illuminate why I think Jet players are so mistake prone:

" Jets players have ZERO accountability IMHO. I like to tell a story Parcells has told and Phil Simms has backed up on a few occasions about player fear. Tuna would say "These players have millions and get on a plane after game to fly to Caribbean with 2/3 days off. They dont really feel the pain of mistakes like other workers. The only thing I have to 'motivate' them is fear of humiliation. Humiliation on national TV. They know with me I will chew them out when the come off field after mistake in front of millions. They do NOT like that." Simms has verified that after a mistake Giants players would walk off field at 10 yd line to avoid meeting Tuna and his wrath. It works.
When was last time we saw Rex chew a player out for a mistake?? Rare, if EVER. ZERO accountability."
