Jets expected to cut Calvin Pace & Bart Scott

2054.jpg

The Jets are expected to release OLB Calvin Pace, ILB Bart Scott, OT Jason Smith, and S Eric Smith as soon as the waiver period opens in February.

Pace has been one of the least productive pass rushers in the league over the past three seasons. The moves will save $8.56 million on Pace, $7.15 million on Scott, $12 million on Jason Smith, and $3 million on Eric Smith while accounting for just $4.5 million in dead money. The Jets will have still little cap space with just 10 starters under contract.

Perhaps, but what do any of these laughably overpaid schmucks have to do with that?

The minimal depth behind those guys scares. Davis will start in Scott's slot, and I'm assuming McIntyre will rotate with Sapp at Pace's spot? At safety, can they re-sign Landry? That defense was the only thing keeping this squad from a 2 win season. Either Gamble kills it with this draft, or he works some real magic in FA, or he lets Rex burn with a bad roster.

Eric Smith is going to be cut, and this is the best you've got?

Believe it or not, after this season Smith has moved quite a few notches down on my list of most hated Jets. At the QB position alone there are two players who I would gladly concede having another season of Eric Trips if it somehow guaranteed we got rid of them. Plus, as much as it pains me to admit it, with his ass finally tossed back into a backup role where it belongs, he wasn't quite as awful this year.

Besides, I celebrated once before when the Jets let him hit FA and we all know how that turned out, so I'm not going to buy into him really being gone until he's on another team's roster.

These guys were completely washed up this season (assuming they were ever worth a damn in the first place) and needed to be replaced anyway. Obviously it needs to be addressed, but them wasting away cap space wasn't going to make that scenario any different. The one position I'd say might be a bit more worrisome than it already was this year would be safety, but that has less to do with Smith than it does have to do with both starters being FAs. I doubt the Jets will have much trouble bringing Bell back on the cheap, but Landry's a whole different story. Regardless, I still have far less concerns about this team fielding at least a solid (if unspectacular) D than I do about them fielding an O capable of doing, well... anything.

All of these cuts are addition by subtraction as far as I am concerned. The Jets were getting nothing from any of these players.

I don't think the Jets are going to be as bad as everyone is making it out. If I was the new GM I would probably keep Rex next year and hope he can keep the defense in the 8-10 range. I would use the first 3 picks on the OL and OLB. Preferably trading down from 8 and still able to get the best RT and OG available and some kind of speed pass rusher.

QB is obviously the biggest question but with a good OL I am ok rolling with McElroy or Matt Moore. This team went to the AFC Championship game 2x with a weak QB and great OL. We aren't getting a franchise QB next season so we may as well get back to a great OL.

Smith is solid depth and a sure tackler...led the team in tackles last season. It'd be nice if we could resign him cheap. J. Smith? No thanks. Scott? Gimpy toes and huge contract? Good cut, sorry Bart. And now Pace. Goodbye. See ya. So long. When I think of the production versus the ridiculous price? Ug. Pace and Tanny gone makes me feel like we're already getting better as a team.

Sad how underrated Scott was in his tenure here. Yeah he was badly declining in the last two seasons when he was physically broken down, but his play in the two title game seasons was nothing short of immense. Shocked he’s lasted in the league as long as he has the way he plays. Just an animal against the run and in disrupting blocking schemes, made Harris look 10 times the player he actually is. Loved his attitude, even if that’s what ended up causing fans to really turn on him.

Pace had his moments too, particularly early on. Heck his destruction of Eli in pre-season was moneys worth alone.

The two Smiths can go **** each other sideways. Wasters.

Just because your safety is faster than your LBs does not mean he is fast enough to play the position.

Harris!!! Please go away. Thanks.

Sorry for the -rep, on a tablet...you are entitled to wish away Harris.

That said, aside from his Tanny special contract, David Harris has been a fantastic Jet. He is not the most physically gifted guy, but he is a very smart and strong player at ILB. I seriously doubt that any members of the coaching staff shares your sentiment.

As of right now, reports are that Rex is staying, which means that most, if not all, of the D staff will remain. Regardless, there are many coaches around the league that speak highly of Harris. Everyone but Jets fans seem to think this guy is top ten at his position.

Agreed on Scott.

Pace? Was brought in to get sacks. never did much of that. An ok player but not as advertised.

Not that I dont think this will eventually happen as it should, but you'd think moves like this would wait for a new GM to be hired?

Probably the kind of moves any GM would welcome. Guys who have lost a step and make too much. Seems pretty straight forward. Might get one back on the cheap?

Maybe Scott or Pace because they've clearly lost a step are in the 32+ age range where you're not getting big contracts anymore. I'd prefer never seeing Eric Smith on the field again for the Jets. Jason Smith I couldnt care less about.

For teams that really struggle vs. the run, I could see them having interest in a Scott or Pace. They are both pretty solid from that perspective. They offer very little in coverage or pass rush. Wonder if Rex and Scott's relationship could help get him back on the cheap, though I think he's need less than any of these 4. Since the Jets will be losing both OLB this season, Pace back on the cheap would be nice to be honest. Just so they're not forced to start a rookie if they're not ready.

Pretty much my thoughts. Keep one of them at the Vet minimum. Scott could probably still be of valuable in a reduced situational role and as a leader.

I'm still not sure about this. Pace was signed coming off a 6.5 season, a career high. OTOH, he was a guy who played both 3-4 OLB and 4-3 OLB for the Cardinals when he moved to LB, as well as 4-3 DE.. Basically, I've always thought he was signed for scheme versatility and it bore out in his contract numbers which are dwarfed by the league's pass rushers.

He was a pretty good player until 2012 for the Jets too...Always got a little undersold here because fans are the same across all sports and hold contract salary against the player. If the Gholston pick worked out Pace is where he should be and where his contract said he should be...a quality "#2" DE/OLB starter on the roster across from a guy who is a top tier pass rusher/OLB.

You show me a team that has a good draft and I'll show you a team that doesn't have a lot of high salaried veterans blocking the progress of the young kids. Part of having a good draft is having the opportunity to allow a bunch of the new players to play right away. Look at Wilkerson, he was given a chance and has come quickly despite playing his college ball at Temple. Now look at Kenrick Ellis, has he been bad because he stinks or because he has veterans in front of him keeping him from learning on the job? Getting rid of these high salaried stiffs should create opportuniies for young players.

Agreed. The sad part is Pace was instantly the Jets best pass rusher the moment he signed. They might have been hopeful that he would improve in this department, but I think he has pretty much lived up to expectations. Gholston was the one the Jets brass projected to be our sack specialist, but then epic fail happened.

Members of the coaching staff felt Mark Sanchez was worthy of a guaranteed contract extension.

Members of the coaching staff felt Santonio Holmes was worthy of a guaranteed contract extension.

Members of the coaching staff felt Wayne Hunter was worthy of a guaranteed contract extension.

Members of the coaching staff felt Bart Scott was worth bringing in at $8M/year.

Members of the coaching staff felt it was worth using 3 draft picks on Shonn Greene in the same draft they'd just used their 2 highest picks on Sanchez.

Members of the coaching staff felt Brian Schottenheimer was worthy of a 3-year extension in 2011.

Members of the coaching staff felt Brodney Pool would prove to be the best FA acquisition in the league.

Members of the coaching staff felt Aaron Maybin could be a starter in the spring/summer of 2012.

Members of the coaching staff felt Brandon Moore was the best OG in the NFL last year.

Members of the coaching staff felt the need to announce Tebow as the #2 QB before he met the team.

Members of the coaching staff felt Dwight Lowery was more expendable than Eric Smith.

Members of the coaching staff felt John Conner earned the starting FB spot in his 2nd season.

Members of the coaching staff felt Joe McKnight could also play safety since he'd already mastered his native position in such elite fashion.

Members of the coaching staff felt that we should run Shonn Greene up the gut for minimal or no gain 10-15x every game (like with Tomlinson and Jones before him) because that's what "ground and pound" offenses do.

I find myself caring less and less what the coaching staff of a hand-picked losing team thinks.

David Harris runs and moves like he's in a waist-high pool of water, can't cover for sh*t, isn't even the sure tackler he once was, and overall has got to be the single most overrated LB in the NFL. He's certainly the most overpaid. And he's one of the big-3 reasons we have lousy, league-minimum-salary depth and why we won't be bringing in better FAs or retaining more of our own in 2013.

I don't at all think the coaching staff had little to do with the items I mentioned above (which is depressing when you read them one after the next). I don't nearly consider Rex to be the villain some do, but I also don't buy into what is essentially a conspiracy theory that most or all these overpriced or bad players were thrust upon him without his enthusiastic approval.

"Hey Rex - surprise! Your new WRs are Burress and Mason. I know you didn't want them but just shut up and coach them."

"Hey Rex - surprise! Your starting QB for the next 2 years is guaranteed to be Mark Sanchez. I know he had a bad year and atrocious end of the season, but just shut up and start him."

"Hey Rex - surprise! We want to bring in Bart Scott for $8M/year. Go wait outside his house in your car until the stroke of midnight when free agency officially begins."

"Hey Rex - surprise! We extended Santonio Holmes for $9M/year. Now go make him a team captain and act like you wanted this."

I don't find any of this stuff remotely believable, do you?

I do not find that notion even a little bit believable.
