Khan, Whisenhunt, bring Russ Grimm in to coach the OL, maybe floor the Jet world and hire Russ Grimm or Whisenhunt as HC...chase the Ferentz maybe...This is the path I would like, but we will see what Korn/Ferry advises.

Khan interviewed with the Rams last year. They said no and subsequently hired Les Snead and put Brian Schottenheimer on their coaching staff, so what does THAT tell you?

A little iffy on whether he is a Football Man.

Jets interviewing Omar Khan for G.M. job

The Jets ultimately could be replacing Mike Tannenbaum with another Mike Tannenbaum.

The recently-fired G.M. rose through the ranks as a cap-and-contracts specialist. Now that the Jets are having trouble replacing Tannenbaum with a traditional “football guy,” they’re turning their attention to another cap-and-contracts specialist.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports that the Jets will interview Omar Khan for the G.M. position on Thursday. Khan currently serves as the director of football and business administration in Pittsburgh.

As the search expands, there’s a chance that the eventual hire will have less power than previously envisioned, with coach Rex Ryan in turn having greater authority over player personnel.

If, alternatively, Khan would have final say over the draft and free agency, he would need to rely on someone like Terry Bradway to help set the table, like Bradway did for Tannenbaum

We raid the Steelers and come up with...their Tannenbaum. Korn/Ferry, you've done it again.

It's a free-for-all at this point. They're going to interview everybody who agrees to be interviewed and hire the guy that puts up the least resistance when told that Rex is in charge.

Two nightmares.

Jets need a strong personnel guy to head the organization. Period. They need a guy capable of understanding who the best players are and what they're worth on his own, not a guy taking the advice of Bradway or (please god no) orders from Ryan. Ryan needs a boss.

Jets expand G.M search, will interview Steelers executive Omar Khan and Dolphins assistant G.M. Brian Gaine

BY MANISH MEHTA

Nine days after Woody Johnson fired Mike Tannenbaum, the Jets expanded their general manager search by scheduling interviews with Steelers’ Director of Football & Business Administration Omar Khan and Dolphins assistant general manager Brian Gaine, according to sources.

Khan’s interview will take place Thursday morning, while Gaine’s interview will take place later in the week. The Jets expressed interest in Chargers’ director of player personnel Jimmy Raye, but no interview has been scheduled to this point.

Khan, a general manager candidate in the past few years, has thrived in contract negotiations and salary cap navigation, two areas that the Jets desperately need to improve. Khan has been the Steelers’ chief contract negotiator for more than a decade.

The Jets lost out on coveted candidate David Caldwell after accepted the Jaguars’ G.M. job.

Gang Green is still looking for a point man to repair the organization after owner Woody Johnson made the unconventional decision to fire his general manager and keep his head coach.

The Jets reached out to Colts vice president of football operations Tom Telesco earlier in the week, according to a source, but he accepted the Chargers’ G.M. job on Wednesday.

Niners’ director of player personnel Tom Gamble, believed to have been the front-runner entering the interviewing phase, didn’t dazzle the Jets’ brass during his interview last week, according to a source. Gamble interviewed with the Chargers earlier this week and reportedly is on the Chiefs’ radar as well.

Johnson maintained during a Tuesday press conference that he hasn’t received any indication from prospective candidates that inheriting Ryan as the head coach for the 2013 season would prevent them from accepting the position.

“I think everybody feels like they're pretty fortunate to have Rex because of what they know,” Johnson said. “They know he's a good coach and you can't always say that. It takes one of the uncertainties out of the equation."

Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross and in-house candidate Scott Cohen have also been interviewed. Former Browns G.M. Tom Heckert, who wouldn’t have been received well by the fans due to his recent poor track record, cancelled his interview last week. John Dorsey, the Packers director of player personnel, was in the mix at the start of the process, but he hasn’t been interviewed.

Gaine and Raye have Jets’ ties.

Gaine, a New York native, was a practice squad tight end for the Jets before working in the scouting department for Bill Parcells. Considered a rising star in league circles, Gaine worked for Parcells in Dallas before moving up the ranks with the Dolphins in the past few years. On Wednesday, former Jets Marvin Jones and Wayne Chrebet endorsed Gaine on Twitter. Chrebet called his former teammate a “Great football mind” that was “smart” and “eager.” Gaine interviewed for the Rams’ G.M. job last year.

Raye was the front runner for the Chargers’ job before Telesco blew away the San Diego brass. Raye’s dad, Jimmy Raye II, was an assistant coach for Herman Edwards and Eric Mangini.

Don't the Steelers deal with contracts by essentially not signing veterans to their big paydays, then having a younger player behind them to step in? That's not cap wizardry, that's good scouting. The Jets are looking at the wrong dude on that Steelers staff.

Exactly. Tannenbaum was supposed to be an excellent contract guy. Then he drafted horribly, pissed away picks, and had to overpay the likes of Scott, pace, Holmes, LT, and a half dozen other high end rentals. No negotiations can overcome poor drafting and poor personnel management.

Sure looks that way. I've done more than my share of bitching throughout this GM search, but hiring Khan would be a ****up of what can only be referred to as Jetsian proportions. I would happily take any of the other available candidates, up to and including Scott Cohen, over another cap guy.
