The Pittsburgh Steelers have waived running back Chris Rainey after he was arrested and charged with one count of simple battery (dating violence).
On their official Twitter account, the Steelers posted: "Steelers GM Kevin Colbert 'Under the circumstances and due to this conduct, Chris will no longer be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.' " Rainey, who attended the University of Florida, was arrested Thursday morning in Gainesville, according to a statement from the Gainesville Police Department. Police responded after receiving a 911 call from a witness that said a male and female were involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical, the statement read. Officers arrived and identified Rainey as the male involved, the statement read. Witnesses told police that Rainey and the alleged victim were arguing over Rainey’s cellphone. According to witnesses’ reports, Rainey slapped the alleged victim across the face. The altercation continued briefly, with Rainey chasing after the woman to get his cellphone and both parties falling to the ground. Neither party suffered visible injuries, the police statement read. Rainey denied hitting the victim at the scene, according to an NFL.com report.
"He did admit to some of the altercation. He admitted he grabbed her bag, which caused both of them to fall and he admitted to chasing her. He denied slapping her, but we had several witnesses to that," Gainesville police public information officer Ben Tobias told NFL.com.
Rainey and the female victim have been in a dating relationship for approximately nine months, the police statement said. Rainey was transported to the Alachua County Jail for booking.
Rainey, who was drafted in the fifth round in the 2012 NFL Draft, served mainly as a return specialist for the Steelers this past season. He returned 39 kickoffs for an average of 26.5 yards per return. He also rushed for 102 yards and two TDs and caught 14 passes for 60 yards.
Rainey also was arrested during his time at Florida. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor stalking and received probation.

How exactly do they justify cutting Rainey over moral outrage yet keep a guy employed that was accused of rape 3 times in an 18 month period?
Because Rainey sucks

Allegedly (fwiw) Dan Rooney flew back from Ireland to cut Roethlisberger himself but was talked out of it with the condition that Ben would be on super-probation and they'd excise the next POS who stepped out of line, which was Santonio.

per rotoworld:
"Rainey was apparently a degenerate gambler, as he had signed himself onto a self-exclusion list allowing himself to be banned from that facility and others. Rainey had also been arrested and accused of a felony stalking charge in Florida in 2010 after threatening a woman and texting "Time to die." GM Kevin Colbert termed Rainey's Thursday arrest "extremely disappointing," confirming that the tailback's "conduct" was the reason for his release."
I didn't know that option existed at places of gambling...or, that anyone struck with the gambling-bug would volunteer himself to said option. How does that even work? Making a vendor (who wants your money) responsible for your vice (which is their business/source of income) when you are inclined to continue pressing the issue.
That's like the dude who gets cut-off in my bar, getting drinks from his buddy. Except Rainey is in a half stadium hiding in the bleachers while his pal redeems his race stubs.
WHO signs a self-exclusion list?!

Franchise QB's are hard to get. RB's on the other hand are dispensable commodities of NFL. Nice way to take the moral highground with a dispensable player. This will be used by media folk to tell the world what a class act the Steelers are right before they interview Ben,

People who are compulsive gamblers and know they cant stay away. Most if not all states have programs in place for compulsive gamblers and the casinos MUST refuse their bets, and cannot pay out any winnings to the person. in some states, you can be arrested if you are on the list and try to enter a casino.

If you have to resort to reaching out and tugging at the purse of some chickenhead in her stripper heels you are trying to run down, then clearly you are not fast enough for the nfl. Just sayin'.
