New York Jets coach Rex Ryan, involved in a Jan. 14 auto wreck in Bethlehem, admitted at the scene that he tried to hurry through the intersection before the traffic light turned red, authorities said.

Ryan was uninjured following a three-vehicle crash at 6:13 p.m. Jan. 14 at West Third and Wyandotte streets in the South Side. An incident report about the crash was released by the Bethlehem Police Department following a large amount of press inquiries on the subject. The incident report redacted the names of others involved in the wreck as well as the names of the investigating officers.

Police Chief Jason Schiffer did not return calls for comment. The city's legal department says a full accident report is only accessible to insurance companies and those involved in the wreck. The information was released in this case because Ryan is a high-profile person.

Police initially said Ryan did not receive a warning in the collision, but the incident report indicates the pro football coach was provided a written warning on a red light violation. A partial explanation of why the information wasn't released sooner was posted on the department's official Facebook page in a series of comments about the wreck.

"The only traffic related incidents that are reported are major accidents and DUI arrests. This matter was, and remains, insignificant to us," the police department comment says. "We responded to dozens of requests from the media for information on this crash and issued the press release."

Melissa Melewsky, with the <a href="http://panewsmedia.o.../">Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, said the state's vehicle code law is rather restrictive when it comes to public information on accident or incident reports. Departments can release reports for a fee, usually $15, but that's entirely up to them, Melewsky said.

"Unfortunately, right to know access for accident and incident reports is not where we think it should be," she said. "It sounds like the police have released more than they're required to by law."

The report says Ryan was traveling westbound on Third Street when he "tried to beat the light" and instead struck a vehicle that had entered the intersection. The driver of that vehicle told police the Mustang was "traveling at a high rate of speed."

The impact sent the second vehicle into a third vehicle turning in the intersection, a Toyota Corolla, according to the police report.

Ryan denied to police that he was speeding before the crash, but didn't deny being the cause of the wreck, according to the report.

Police were awaiting a call from a second witness to the wreck before completing the investigation. None of the other drivers or passengers involved in the collision were injured, according to the report.

Rex Ryan Wrecked His Red Mustang After Running A Stoplight In Pennsylvania Last Week, According To Police [updated With Photo Of Other Car]

avt-small.jpgmulti-car pileup of an offseason, metaphorically. Now comes word that the Jets head coach literally had one last week: A tipster wrote us yesterday to say that a week earlier, Ryan was in a three-car crash in Bethlehem, Pa.

The tip said that Ryan had sped through an intersection, only to have his car collide with another vehicle, which in turn crashed into a third. A source with the Bethlehem police department confirmed those details, except for the speeding.

According to the police, Ryan was driving a red Mustang westbound on West 3rd Street in Bethlehem at 6:14 p.m. on Jan. 14 when he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of West 3rd and Wyandotte Street. The Mustang collided with another vehicle, sending it crashing into the third vehicle. "It's a blind hill to some degree," a police source said, describing the intersection. "It kind of crests at Wyandotte Street."

The police source said Ryan denied he was speeding, and that the damage at the scene did not indicate he had been speeding. The police source added that Ryan allegedly did not deny he ran the red light, however. All three vehicles sustained what the police source described as "moderate" damage. There were no injuries, and the police source did not say whether Ryan had been given a citation.

Our tipster speculated that Ryan might have been driving through Bethlehem because he was on his way to meet with Marty Mornhinweg, the former Eagles offensive coordinator hired over the weekend to the same position with the Jets. We could not confirm why Ryan was driving through Bethlehem, Pa., in the early evening hours last Monday.
