An unbiased medical opinion on Chads shoulder

AFJF

Recommended Posts

So I'm having my shoulder looked at today by an orhopedist who I work with and we get to talking about rotator cuff injuries in pro athletes. I respect the guys opinion greatly because he has worked with Dr. James Andrews and keeps himself up to date on current sports injuries. I figure I'd ask him what he thinks about Pennington and his response is "ohhhh, he's ****ed"

He goes on to show me some pictures of similar procedures to Penningtons and in his unbiased medical opinion says that the Jets are trying to make chicken soup out of chicken sh*t when they say they'll rehab him and get him back. #-o

I hope to god he's wrong but just thought I'd share based on the fact that I know he's worked with Andrews and had no reason to BS me.

Take it for what it's worth.

Funny, mine said things along similar lines as well.

$64 Million can make medical science a funny thing at times.

No Sh&T Dick Tracy!!! We all know he is worthless, that is everyone cept the Jets FO, maybe they think we are all stupid and TB is trying to cover up his major $64m F up. Shoot there could be a major motion picture based on these chain of Events.

I can see it now....

"They Shoot Penne's Don't They"

starring Jim Carey and Jackie Chiles and Matthew Modine as Penne!

Of course, why would the opinion of a medical professional be needed when we can just refer to afosmf.

Perhaps you havent realized it yet but when you talk about Chad there aren't a whole lot of people who listen based on the fact that anything you say about him is said in a slanted manner due to the fact that you're a Giant fan. Congrats on Eli by the way, he was a nice pick.

Your kidding me right :):):)

PS being a Giant Fan wouldn't be so bad right now, they actually could be going to big dance, the only place jests are going to is the "Big Dig"!

All I'm saying is that I know that you're a "jet fan" but there isn't a poster on this board who takes more pleasure in seeing one of our players facing a career ending injury. We all have our definition of what a fan is but anybody who celebrates a key player being unable to play anymore would not fit many of those...JMO of course.

I am supposed to have my shoulder looked at, and most likely, will end up having surgery.

I messed my shoulder up years ago, and most liekly tore a labrum or the cuff itself. Never had it looked at, and never fully regained the strentgh I once had. Stupid me.... #-o

Chad is ****ed. No if, and or buts about it. His contract kills us, and prevents us from cutting him, unless Bradway bites the bullet and starts from scratch. No way it happens.

Keep him, pray, but sign some stiff in the offseason.

We're ****ed.

AFJ- Your post is the furthest thing from the truth

I was one of the biggest Penne supporters in the beginning, you can ask TX, we had plenty of arguments regarding Cindy and him.

He started losing me when he sucked donkey d*ck in the big games and it is real clear teams started stacking the run and daring his arm to beat them.

Much like a new pitcher, who is lights out until the 2nd time you see him. In the words of jets4ever penne is a JAG.

Once his shoulder when kaput, most of us knew that he would not be a viable option anymore. The pre-season was a joke and the KC game set the stage for a miserable season. This second injury dots the i

and we need to cut ties with him asap.

That is the truth and nothing but the truth

NO Doctor, I repeat NO DOCTOR, can talk about Chad Pennington's condition unless Pennington gave them permission. Doctors can't even discuss it between themselves without risking their licenses.

In other words, the doctor can't make an informed opinion. He can GUESS on the condition but he does not know!

and no i did not sleep in a holiday inn last night.

Any ortho can speak to this.

I'm well aware of that, as is the doctor I spoke to...but as an orthopedist who has worked with Andrews, he's free to give his medical opinion on any given case and the realistic expectations associated with a player being able to overcome injuries he's familiar with.

In addition, a doctor does not need a patients permission to talk to another doctor about a given condition. Doctors and PAs do it every single day if they're faced with a case/condition they're not 100% sure of. It's a need to know basis thing. They can't shoot the sh*t over dinner and talk aobut a case for the hel of it, but if a doctor feels that a specialist can shed some light on a situation, he'll call him, tell him what he's looking at, and get an opinion.

Im not a doctor by any means but my gut instinct says Chad will defy the odds and make a comeback.

More than that Im not sure the JETS front office have any other options.

Even if Matt Leinart/Cutler are there to be drafted, we are talking about 2 or 3 years rebuilding while these guys come up to snuff.

They will get a vet of some kind but hope for Chad to make a recovery. What else can they do?

it is called a rebuilding year and penne needs to be cut, you cannot have a $64m clipboard holder on sideline. he is done over and out. take the cap hits in 2006 and go with young stud, be it rivers, shaub or volek or draftpick.

The truth is that you celebrate Penningtons injury. If you ever have pretended to give a sh*t about the guy I must have blinked and missed it. All you do is trash the guy which I could completely understand if he was a lowlife like T.O. or Bill Romanowski but thats not Pennington. He's a guy who does all he can to win and he's a team player. Again, JMHO which in the big picture is meaningless, but a guy like Chad deserves better from "fans" of this team. If you don't like the guy thats fine, but to continually kick him while he's down baffles me. I don't recall him doing anything that would warrant such disrespect.

I don't think any orthopedist can speak of it without examining the patient. Those who do are irresponsible.

I'm not saying he will or will not come back. I just get annoyed when these doctors make statements with no knowledge of the individual.

My impression was that he was speaking with knowledge of surgery to repair a torn rotatory cuff (or two) and how difficult it would be (for any player) to continue a job that requires repetitive motion which will cause continuous stress on the site. I'm not being a smartass here but can anybody recall an NFL QB that came back from two rotator cuff surgeries and if so did they do it without losing any velocity? Not to say it's impossible, but how likely is it?

and has taken us and the franchise for a ride.

enough with his cheerleading and cut his ass! It is my priviledge to say so!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keith Byars on Miami radio post game was saying he's done too-and this guy was a teammate.Said as the Jets starting franchise QB it's over for Chad.Maybe we should start listening to ex-players a little more-even the wankers on HBO were saying it and as much as it pissed me off at the time-they were right.

Are you sure they were teammates? I think Byars left before Chad was drafted.

Chad could be the exception because the guy has a heart and the determination bigger then any injured player I've seen. Honestly, I think it's a 25/75 shot at him fully coming back, but if anyone can make something happen with 25% probability, it's Penny.

gob- if chad had favre's arm i might agree with you, but his average to below average arm will turn into

a Joe Kapp--esque Flutter nation.

Would you want to bet 64M on that? Without a restructure contract, we are F!

Very true, Aec but being a physician and having knowledge of the situation, I am sure he can make an INFORMED guess on the situation.

Remember shortly after the Buffalo game, when Penny was injured? There was an article, I believe in Newsday, about an orthopedist who believed Chad's injury was pretty significant, simply by the way in which he was tackled and injured. His belief was that Chad would have to go through major reconstructive surgery.

Some of us chimed in with our own injury histories, and I remember a poster by the name of TexJet claiming that he also believed, having gone through the surgery himself, that Chad was in trouble.

I hurt my shoulder in a very similar fashion, and thought Chad was done for the year.

Looks like the man was right. Each person is different, but judging from the doc's own remarks that he had never seen a person of Chad's age with so much damage, only to have major reconstructive surgery, and having to have it done again, is basically the end. Do we know for sure? No. Would I bet on him returning? Hell no. In fact, I'd lay the house that he doesn't.

I'd love for him to come back, but it takes at least a year to return, and it's not guaranteed. Gannon said so much, as did Don Majkowski.

I wish the best, but fear and expect the worst.

i agree with AFJ...again..im still basically just a kid, and ive grown up in NC never seeing a single jets game live, and with no jets fans around me...so i guess im not the same as the rest of you guys...but i feel like we owe pennington something more than "a rolex and the way to the door." There are players around the NFL that refuse to play just because they dont feel like it...and chad tried numerous times to play through the pain, even of a torn rotator cuff, and yeah it costed him dearly, but he knew we needed him, and he was there. Chad Pennington represents everything i LOVE about the new york jets, everything i love about football, and its beyond me that you guys dont even want to give him one last chance. I know the odds, and i know what professionals think...but like bit said, if anyone can do it, its our chad, and i think we owe it to him to give him one last shot

That is true.

Assmop was one of the biggest PennyBoy delusionalists a few years ago.

But he came to his senses and finally listened to my vast, superior football knowledge.

Look i wish i could sit here and say with confidence I know the Jets will have the stones to cut Chad Pennington and draft a top Qb for 2006. but i don't know how realistic that is.

Could you imagine Terry coming to Woody and telling him he wants to cut Chad and sign a different guy who will want a multi-million dollar bonus? What if Woody says "how about i cut you instead?"

because seriously this is what we are asking of the front office. A mulligan on a 20 million dollar bonus is a pretty big motzoh ball, even for a billionare.

I hope they do it, I hope woody et al have the understanding to realize that football is a collision sport and sometimes these things happen - i am not sure that they will. Return on investment is very important.

We owe him Nada, if anything he should pay back some of the $22M clams he has fleeced from jests!!!!!!

Get over it and him he is finished!!!!!!

There is no room for sentiment in Big Business!

Penny's career was ruined by the Jets management. They played him for over half a season knowing full well he was badly injured. They pushed him into a starting role when he was not even close to 100%. He stood up and did all he was asked to do by a negligent coach and FO. Yet you claim he fleeced his team? Wasn't it the team that offered him the contract before destroying his career?
