Ryan And Idzik On Darrelle Revis

As the staff of the New York Jets prepares to evaluate college players at the NFL combine, Rex Ryan and John Idzik took some time to talk to the media about Darrelle Revis.  Revis has been in the news lately and here is what Ryan and Idzik had to say:

John Idzik

On whether he can clarify the team’s position on Darrelle Revis…
Darrelle Revis is obviously a great football player. He’s a great New York Jet. He’s a tremendous asset to our football team and our organization. With respect to clarity, I don’t know that anything has really changed because we’ve always wanted Darrelle to be a part of our team. That has never changed. I think there have been rumors or stories published and it’s really hard for me or anybody in our organization to speculate and answer to all rumors or stories that we hear. With respect to Darrelle, we’ve always wanted him to be a part of the New York Jets. Our focus with Darrelle right now is to aid him in any way we can with his rehab so he returns to the player we all know he is. As such, he will be a tremendous asset to us.

On if he will entertain trade offers for Revis …
Specifically (talking about) Darrelle, I don’t think it’s something that’s limited to one person. With me and my job and Rex (Ryan) and everybody involved, we will always field calls and always have internal discussions about how we can improve our team day-to-day, position-by-position. That’s an ongoing process. That’s not isolated to any one player or any one position. That’s just something that we do on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, particularly at this time when you’re going into free agency and the draft. There are a lot of what-if’s if you will that we will be discussing internally.

On if Revis is comfortable with his current situation…
I think you’d have to ask Darrelle that. I can’t speak for Darrelle. I can say from our perspective that we’re very comfortable with Darrelle as a New York Jet. Our focus is going to be on getting him back. He has a pretty significant injury to rehabilitate. I think that’s our focus right now is to get him back to the level he was playing at before so he can help us.

On whether the team plans to speak with Revis’ agents about an extension…
I don’t want to get into speculation, but again I think you can understand it and respect it that we won’t ever get into contractual discussions publicly. We won’t get into speculations publicly but we will deal with the here and now. I think that’s the most truthful way. Otherwise, it can be very misleading and we don’t want to do that.

On if the team’s preference is for Revis to rehab in New Jersey…
Whatever is best for Darrelle and we’ll talk that through with him. Again, if he feels comfortable rehabbing where he is (that is fine). What we want is a good end result just like Darrelle does. What’s good for Darrelle is good for the New York Jets. Obviously, the more time we spend with Darrelle one-on-one is a good thing. I think as we get into the offseason program, it is all voluntary, but you would hope that most of your players want to be there and be in the building and get the juices flowing with our staff and everybody that we have. We have a fine medical staff. We have a great training staff. We have tremendous facilities so we feel that we have a lot to offer Darrelle and all of our players. We would hope that they would be there, but in the end of the day, it’s what’s best for Darrelle – how can we get him to clear medically and get back to the field to where he was before as quickly as possible.

Rex Ryan

On the Darrelle Revis trade rumors…
It’s funny. The thing pops up, and I think it’s interesting, as John talked about, the very first day he gets the job and this is what I was telling Darrelle. When I called Darrelle, (I said), ‘Darrelle, let’s face it, the man hasn’t been on the job for 24 hours and now you’re going to get traded?’ I thought that was kind of interesting and I said, ‘It’s not accurate. Plain and simple it’s not accurate.’ I told him that. If he was going to be involved in a trade, I think he and his agents would know about it, as would the general manager and myself, I would think. So there was no validity to that trade. I don’t know where things like that get drummed up from. Maybe somebody is a big fan of a certain team, and is playing fantasy football, and would like to have him on his team. I’m not sure.

On if he would be opposed to trading Revis…
I’m going to coach whoever is here, but John and everybody would be involved in that. Certainly, to sit down and say absolutely not, we’re not going to do it, I’m not going to say this player or that player, but if we got Jim Brown in that trade, we would probably look into it (joking).

On what he told Revis …
I provided him with the answer that I know to be true, which was that was not accurate.

On what he learned about Revis’ trade value by watching the defense play without him in 2012…
(It is) no shock to me. You guys see it every day. You guys know how good Darrelle Revis is. I think we all see it. I think the young corner from Seattle (Richard Sherman) sees it. He’s compared himself to the best. He even sees it. Everybody sees it. Clearly, he’s a tremendous player. You’d like to sit back, and right after an injury like that occurs, you want to cry and all of that stuff on the podium. And you’ll be like, ‘Oh hey, we’re going forward, it’s business as usual.’ It’s not business as usual. It’s hard to replace a guy like Darrelle Revis, and then Santonio Holmes on top of that. It’s funny because everybody wants to say you’re making excuses, never make excuses. Trust me, it was a big difference.

the one thing that always annoys me is that stance that you are making excuses if you say that after losing your best player on defense or offense or whatever. or, as in our case, best defensive player and best offensive player that you are making excuses if you say its a reason for not doing as well. so if the 1923 yankees lose babe ruth in may are they supposed to have been the same team? i really ****in doubt it

The one thing I don't get is why not be more hands on with your players if you're a NFL front office? Why not try and treat them to a higher standard and develop a reputation as a team that really goes out of their way to respect and treat their players right. Kind of like a flagship franchise in that regard. Am I just being extremely naive? I just don't know how it works. But I know in most other industries companies with that kind of culture and passion towards and in return, from employees tend to be the most successful. Just asking. Do other teams do that? Try it? I'm sure some are better at it than others. But does it make a difference? I wouldn't even know where the Jets would stand on the scale too.

Just seems weird. How much of a division there always seems to be between the players and team. The "you'll have to ask Darrell" type answers. Just the cold hard facts of the NFL? Probably. I get that to a degree. I get in this manner the "employees" tend to only have a 2-3 year shelf life, so you can't get attached. I have to say though, if you're a multi billion dollar owner why not breakdown a paradigm and create a cultural niche that, if the money is equal. You're the team guys want to play for. I'm sure the culture integrated from the other side/players union doesn't help either. Just a random thought.

I guess you could say the players are spoiled and pampered enough as it is.

it doesn't sound like either of these men wants to trade the team's best player.

No.  I'm sure they'd prefer he signs a reasonable deal and start acting like he wants to be a Jet.  I don't think either is going to happen any time soon.

You actually listen to what coaches and GM say in press conferences and take that at face value?

The Jets will do their due diligence on Revis and find what his value is and weigh that against having him play out the year, hit free agency and receiving a pick in compensation, along with freeing up cap space.

We should expect nothing less.

we  can read between the lines.

for example Chip Kelly sounds like he's gonna drive up Foles value and cut Nnamdi. He didn't actualy say those things but his tone etc.

Reading between the lines of the Revis press conference leaves with zero impression that they absolutley want him on the team. Actually, to the contrary.

what does that even mean? Making the "contrary" to that statement makes my head want to explode.

"zero impression that they absolutely want him on the team"

the opposite of that is...

"100% certainty that they maybe want him on the team"

They're exactly right.

They want Revis (who doesn't?)

But in the NFL, anything is possible, and good teams listen to any potential deal.

Even for Revis.

So get over it whiney-boy and get back to rehabbing.  If we deal you away, you'll know it.  If we want to resign you for a few more years and a few dozen more holdouts, we'll let you know.  Now, shut yer gob.

Mine was poorly stated. Reading between the lines of what both Idzik and Rex was saying is that they will entertain deals for Revis. There is no guarantee he will be here.

I could not take out of that "It doesn't sound like either of these men want to trade the team's best player". That is wishcasting on your part.

if they were gonna trade him, now is the absolute worst time. coming off the injury with the Jets having a bonus deadline of 1M... they would get fleeced. The time to trade him is during the season... if you trade him at all.

trading a player of that magnitude during a season basically means you give up on that season. Id rather em trade him now so the new people/picks they get have time to learn the system and build chemistry

Tradng him now is giving up on the season. Trading him week 5 after several losses at least they gave it a try. And with his health in doubt, he won't be able to pass a physical right now. his value is at a low and only going up.

Yeah, would be really cool to actually know the real interest from teams. Everyone wants Revis but how many are actually willing to part with a 1st round pick and then pay him $16M per year, coming off a knee injury?

Yeah, but in the long run it might be a good idea.  If the Jets are going to make a move for a QB, they will need some fire power.

I just want all these people ranting about it to be aware that the 1st or 2nd we get next year only equates (basically) to a 2nd or 3rd next.  Even worse, any team making that move in season is a contender that will be picking at the bottom of the round.

I don't see Idzik rolling dice here. If he gets Revis to re-up with new deal thats great and priority 1. But, if they cant agree on new deal soon, then I highly doubt Idzik will 'take a chance' Revis will re-sign w/Jets after 2013 season when he is free agent. He will trade him, even if a down market, as opposed ot getting nothing at end of 2013 season.

Jets 'may' explore offering a small extension (1 added year to make him FA after 2014 season) but who knows for sure.

I don't see Revis getting traded before the season.  I don't see him getting an extension before the season (I wish that one would happen though).  So it looks like this story isn't going anywhere.

Jets have to either sign him to an extension or trade him, sooner rather than later, or they're looking at losing him for the 100th pick (or so) of the 2015 draft. That's the worst case scenario, IMHO.

I'm sure they're listening to every offer very intently.

revis is to blame he wants a huge contract that will leave theD with no one to get excited about. i see teams win the SB without a CB like revis i love for us to keep him but at 15 or16 mill thats way too much, it will kill our cap. This team has way too many holes to fill.

its the same thing either way. Denver picks at 25. no non-contender is gonna trade/sign Revis. for all the reasons that you don't want to re-sign Revis. It's gonna be a late first at best, whenever they trade him.
