Idzik would have a huge target on his head with the #1 overall.  He would literally have to select the single best player in this draft or he would be crucified.

Oh fer sure.  But it's easier said than done.  I think teams would actually be more willing to move up to the #9-spot (from say the teens or twenties) than any team would for the #1. Even though the signing is more cap friendly thanks to the new CPA, there just isn't any player to warrant trading picks to draft #1 overall.

The only possible scenario where I could have seen this happen is if Luke Joekel pulled away from Eric Fisher dramatically.  He didn't.  At this point I'd actually prefer Fisher.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ choices with the No. 1 pick continue to be murky and it is not getting any clearer as the NFL combine comes to a close.

Thus, I think the team may have to start getting creative about the pick and it could mean taking a run at prized cornerback Darrelle Revis.

The Chiefs’ situation got more complicated with the news that Utah defensive lineman Star Lotulelei

has a heart condition and he is undergoing tests. He couldn’t work out

at the combine because of the matter. Unless Lotulelei gets firm medical

conformation that he is at no risk because of the heart issue, there is

little chance he will be taken at the top of the draft.

Would the Chiefs trade the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft to acquire star Jets CB Darrelle Revis?

Lotulelei is Scouts Inc.’s top-rated prospect and is one of the few top prospects

who makes some positional sense for the Chiefs.West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith

ran well at the combine and received mixed reviews for his performances

in the passing drills. He still may be a long shot at No. 1.

Thus, signs point to Kansas City taking Texas A&M left tackle Luke Joeckel at No.1. But that isn’t clear cut, either. The Chiefs like free-agent left tackle Branden Albert

and remain interested in re-signing him. I wouldn’t get too excited

about the possibility of drafting Joeckel and moving Albert to guard.

Albert wants to stay at left tackle and he knows someone will pay him

the premium to play it.

Simply letting Albert walk and drafting Joeckel would not be taking

advantage of having the top pick and it wouldn’t necessarily make the

Chiefs better. They must get better by using the pick wisely. I have an idea how

that could happen: go get Revis. The Jets are reportedly willing to

trade the All-Pro cornerback.I could see a scenario where the Chiefs could use the No. 1 pick as

bait and get Revis, who played for new Kansas City defensive coordinator

Bob Sutton in New York, and the No. 9 pick in return. There may have to

be some additions on either side, but I’m not sure the Jets could get a

better offer.

The Chiefs could then pair Revis with Brandon Flowers and have one of the best cornerback situations in the NFL.

Yes, Revis is coming off a torn ACL. But all reports are that he is

making great progress and he is in the prime of his career. And, yes,

Revis would likely require a new deal, but I think he Chiefs could find a

way to keep receiver Dwayne Bowe and add Revis. That would likely mean letting Albert walk in free agency.

But with the No. 9 pick, the Chiefs could likely get Central Michigan left tackle Eric Fisher and very likely get Oklahoma’s Lane Johnson. Both are highly skilled left tackles.

In addition, reports are heavy that the Chiefs are going after San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith. So, this is what the team’s offseason scorecard could look like:In: Bowe, Alex Smith, Revis and a top rookie left tackle rookie.

Out: Albert and the No. 1 pick.

Looks OK to me and if somehow Albert could be kept, the Chiefs could use the No. 9 pick on Geno Smith or a top prospect at another position.

I know there are lots of hoops to go through for this scenario to

unfold and I am not naïve enough to think it can occur easily. But it’s

plausible through some brainstorming.

That’s exactly the point of the Chiefs’ situation. They have to get

creative because there are too many questions right now about them

having the No. 1 pick. They might have to get creative to make it a

positive situation.

Revis says it 'doesn't matter' where he plays

As a multi-part interview, Darrelle Revis-Michael Robinson
won't be remembered with Frost-Nixon in terms of impact on our culture,
but Part II of the Revis-Robinson sitdown contains a few noteworthy
sound bites from the Jets' star cornerback.

Once again, Revis openly wonders if he'll be back with the Jets. More

importantly, he doesn't seem to care if he's traded."Revis Island will be

back on the field soon," he told the "Real Rob  Report," an online

sports show. "I don't know, we'll see where the  future leads to --

if I'll be back with the Jets or not. It really doesn't matter. I just want

to play football."

This doesn't sound like a man who wants to sign a "Jet for life"
contract. Or maybe Revis is just giving the Jets a taste of their own
medicine, remaining non-committal. Posturing, anyone?

A few other highlights from the interview, which can be seen here:

Revis still believes in QB Mark Sanchez, but he said the No. 1 offseason priority should be acquiring offensive weapons:
"We want guys for Mark Sanchez to throw to, some deep threats. ... Yes,
Mark can get it done, but we need to put the right weapons around him
for him to be successful. That's always been a thing with Mark. That
should be our focus with Mark Sanchez, put the right players around
him."

Revis on the outlook for the 2013 season: "(John
Idzik) is trying to clean house to get some great players in here. ...
It's a rebuilding mode for us, to get the right pieces to the puzzle."

Revis on whether he still believes he's the best cornerback in football: "A healthy Darrelle Revis, I still believe I'm at the top of the food chain."

Revis on his new rivalry with Seahawks CB Richard Sherman:
"Is he on his way? Yes, definitely. He's on his way and much success to
him. I like his game. He's a tall, athletic corner. He can press you.
He can run. He can do a lot of things. ... It's great. It's only going
to make him compete more and it's going to make me compete more. It's
always good."

Polian : Key to Revis situation is his health

Former longtime GM Bill Polian believes the key to a potential Darrelle Revis trade
is his health. He applies the same logic to contract negotiations.

"Keep in mind that all general managers deal with facts and not
sound bites or noise," Polian, an ESPN analyst, said Tuesday on a media
conference call. "The fact is, he's an injured player who has not proven
yet that he is what he was before he got hurt.

"How can you negotiate when you don't know what the player is likely to be ?
You can surmise, but you don't know until he gets on the field," Polian
continued. "To me, that's a very important issue. I presume that if they
have an intention to keep him, at some point they'll enter into the
negotiations. But the timing of that depends entirely on what they find
out vis-a-vis the medical."

On Monday, GM John Idzik said Revis is ahead of schedule in his
recovery from major knee surgery. That also could be a message to a team
that might be interested in trading for Revis, who stirred the pot by
indicating in an interview he'd be intrigued by the prospect of playing
for the 49ers.

The Jets have yet to open negotiations with Revis, who has one year
left on his current deal. There's still time to sit down and hammer out
an extension before the draft, but as I predicted last week, there's no
chance of that happening. They will either trade him before the draft or
let it play out to the summer.

"I can't predict what's going to happen," Polian said, "but I can
tell you what's going to drive the decision -- and that's the medical."

It was reported by Pro Football Talk on Tuesday that the New York Jets
could trade Darrelle Revis a week or so before the 2013 NFL Draft. Now,
it seems as though the process will or could be moved along much more
quickly.

According to the NY Daily News, the Jets are done with Revis Island.

“He’s gone,” a source familiar with the situation said Tuesday. “This
is happening. They’re moving him. They can’t keep him. They’re
rebuilding. They’re starting fresh.”The Daily News also reports that

two or three “legitimate buyers” are prepared to offer the Jets a deal

for their star cornerback, and are also prepared to offer him a new

contract. The two teams mentioned of the potential three are the

Atlanta Falcons and San Francisco 49ers, the two teams who battled

for the right to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl last season.

The Niners have 12 tradable draft picks this year, and 15 in all with
compensatory picks (likely) coming. The Falcons are rumored suitors,
don’t have nearly as many picks, but they just released Dunta Robinson
and with Brent Grimes hitting free agency, they could have a huge void
at the cornerback position. The third team is unknown per the Daily News
report, but I have a feeling it’s an AFC contender. It seems like the only

team who has universally expressed interest in acquiring Revis is

San Francisco, while any other team is merely rumored at this point. Still,

the one big hangup for a Revis trade is not only giving up a bounty of picks,

but giving Revis a new contract.According to the report, that’s not going

to be a problem.

“Sources told The News that a few shoppers for the cornerback have
already made it clear that they are willing to dole out draft choices
and set the parameters for a long-term deal with the Revis camp to get
arguably the best defensive player in the NFL.”This year’s class of

players at the cornerback position in both free agency and the 2013

NFL Draft is very, very strong, so if the Jets want to get the most they

can get for Revis, they are going to probably have to get him

shipped out of there sometime in the next couple of weeks.

One thing is nearly for certain: Darrelle Revis has played his last
game with the New York Jets, and they are about to go into full
rebuilding mode.

Report : 49ers Interested in Darrelle Revis “Sooner Rather Than Later”

What was speculated a month ago is being reported now.

The New York Daily News reports that the 49ers are

among “two or three legitimate buyers” interested in trading

for cornerback Darrelle Revis of the Jets.In fact, a source

is quoted as saying they want to trade for Revis “sooner

rather than later.”

The Falcons are also indicated as an interested team, but

the Atlanta Journal Constitution says not to read much

into that, as the Jets are only trying to leverage the 49ers

by leaking the news of multiple teams being interested.

One thing we know for certain is that the Jets are shopping

Revis around.“He’s gone,” a source told the New York Daily.

“This is happening. They’re moving him. They can’t keep

him. They’re rebuilding. They’re starting fresh.”

San Francisco has 15 picks in his upcoming draft thanks

to the Alex Smith trade, and could use them to their advantage

in pulling off a trade.

Revis is regarded by many as the top cornerback in the league, but

missed all but two games of the 2012 season with a torn ACL and

subsequent knee surgery. The Jets will likely ask for at least a first

round pick in exchange for Revis.

At the NFL the combine last month, the 49ers were checking in

with agents on the cornerback market, thus confirming that they

are indeed looking to upgrade their secondary.

If you put two and two together, this likely means that the 49ers

could and should make a run for Revis.

'Revis Island' should relocate to Tampa

Tampa Bay appears to have the necessary resources to pull off a deal for the Jets'

Darrelle Revis. While seemingly every NFL team is denying interest in New York Jets

cornerback Darrelle Revis, there is one team that should be going after him.

I say put Revis Island on Davis Islands.

That’s the tandem of islands in the shadows of downtown Tampa, Fla.,

and just down the road from Raymond James Stadium. It’s on those

islands that New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter built a mansion, and he

could use some company.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers also could use a shutdown corner.

Revis and the Bucs would be a perfect match on every level. Other

teams are citing the cost of a trade and the salary cap as reasons why

they don’t want the guy who might be the best cornerback of his

generation. But none of those excuses works for the Bucs.

In fact, the things that work against those other teams work for the Bucs.

Let’s start with the price of getting Revis and keeping him for the

long term. It will probably take a couple of draft picks to pry Revis

from the Jets. The Bucs have some flexibility there because they have an

extra fourth-round pick this year. Even if the Bucs had to give up this

year’s first-round pick (No. 13 overall) as part of the package, so

what ?

They’re not going to find a better cornerback than Revis in the middle of the first round.

Then, there’s also the realistic fear that trading for Revis would

be only a one-year solution because he’s heading into the final season

of his contract. But the Bucs are in a unique spot there. They are more

than $32 million under this year’s salary cap and have plenty of cap

room in upcoming years.

They could trade for Revis, immediately sign him to a huge extension

and still have plenty of cap room to work with now and in the future.

But the Bucs have more than just the means to get Revis. They have a glaring need.

Did you happen to catch Tampa Bay’s secondary last season?

The Bucs were so bad they allowed more passing yards than the New Orleans Saints,

which is saying a lot. The Bucs were so bad that they had the league’s

top-ranked run defense but still managed to finish No. 31 in total

defense.

Young Tampa Bay safety Mark Barron could benefit in a big way if the

Bucs managed to acquire star CB Darrelle Revis.

In the process, they traded away their top cornerback, Aqib Talib, mainly

because he was a perpetual headache. Eric Wright, the free agent they

signed to a big contract last year, didn’t really

work out. He ended up getting suspended for violating the league’s

policy on performance-enhancing substances. That suspension voided his

guaranteed base salary for this year, and the Bucs may end up releasing

Wright.

This is a team that can’t afford to go into next season counting on

Leonard Johnson and E.J. Biggers

as anything more than role players. This is a team that needs a

big-time cornerback, and those don’t come any bigger than Revis.

He instantly would make the Bucs better, and that would be a huge

plus for a franchise that hasn’t been to the playoffs since the 2007

season. Put Revis with second-year safety Mark Barron

and add another cornerback and a safety behind a front seven that has

some talent, and Tampa Bay’s defense suddenly could become very good.

There were hints last season that the offense could be pretty good. Get a

little more consistency out of quarterback Josh Freeman, let Revis bolster

the defense, and Tampa Bay could be in the playoff hunt.

That brings us to another point. The Bucs need to win and they also

need to excite a fan base that hasn’t had a lot to be excited about in

recent years.

Winning can cure a lot of that, but so can an injection of charisma.

Revis has charisma. He trademarked the "Revis Island" name and he has

star power.

That’s something the Bucs desperately need as they try to get fans into

a stadium that rarely has sold out in recent years.

The arrival of running back Doug Martin and wide receiver Vincent Jackson

gave the Bucs some star power last year. But, still, Tampa might be the rarest

of NFL markets.

Hockey’s Steven Stamkos and baseball’s Evan Longoria might be more

popular in Tampa than any of the Bucs. Jeter might even be Tampa’s most

famous resident from the sports world, and he plays his home games more

than 1,000 miles away, not far from where Revis has spent his NFL

career.

But maybe it’s time for the Bucs to step up and take Revis out of

New York. If they do, they can give themselves a true superstar, fill

their stadium and maybe turn into a playoff team.

New defensive coordinator avoids Revis issue

Imagine being Dennis Thurman. You spend two decades coaching, waiting
for a shot to become a coordinator. The shot comes this offseason, and
now there's a chance your best player -- Darrelle Revis -- gets traded away.

If Thurman is on the verge of panic, he did a good job of masking his emotions
Monday in a media conference call."We coach the guys we have," said the
Jets' former secondary coach, who was promoted to defensive coordinator
after the season. "I was always taught about not getting overly emotional
about losing a guy. In terms of Darrelle getting hurt last year, we had to
move on and we had to continue to play. They're not going to cancel the
games. Our mindset is, we coach who's here."

Thurman was Revis' position coach from 2009 to 2012, and they're
extremely close. But Thurman said he's had no recent communication with
Revis. He said they haven't talked since Revis was rehabbing his
surgically repaired knee at the Jets' facility, which probably was
around January."I really don't have a comment (on the trade speculation),"
Thurman said. "I think our GM, our coach and people above me will make
that decision."

On other topics, Thurman said he and Rex Ryan haven't decided who
will be the primary play caller. Thurman will remain on the sideline
during games; his predecessor, Mike Pettine, worked from the press box.
Thurman said it's too early to predict if the defense will use more 4-3
fronts than in the past. He said personnel will dictate the scheme.
After cutting Calvin Pace and Bart Scott, the Jets have only one
linebacker under contract with starting experience, David Harris.

~ ~  1. I think the trouble with trading
for Darrelle Revis at any time before October is mind-bogglingly simple:
How can a team trade for Revis when it doesn't know how healthy he is
coming back from ACL surgery, and when it doesn't know what it's going
to take to get him signed long-term? If the Jets trade him during the
early days of the new league year, which begins Tuesday, they'll be
dealing him having no idea what his true value is. And his true value
won't be known, really, until teams see him play in August and
September.

2. I think, still, the best thing for

the Jets to do with Revis is to sign him long-term. And I understand the
reasoning of smart people like Parcells and Polian, who say they
wouldn't pay a corner so much money. But if I'm sure by Labor Day that
Revis is still Revis, I do everything in my power to sign him.

3. I think, however, that I will never

own the Jets, and the man who does, Woody Johnson, has it in his head
that he'll never reach a fair deal with Revis, and so wants him gone.
