What made you a Jets fan (and not a Giants fan)?

Hey Jets fans, just wondering what you made choose to follow the Jets rather than the Giants, since I'm assuming you're mainly from the greater NYC area. Was it liking the AFL over the NFL, liking certain players, or because of where they used to play? (A Jets fan once told me that most people who like the Mets like the Jets, and who like the Giants like Yankees, because they used to share the same stadiums).

Forgive me if I'm missing a really obvious answer. Until now the only contact I've had with Jets fans are those who came trolling onto Patriots boards, and I am honestly curious what makes you choose one over the other.

It was a combination of a couple of things really. My father was a Jets fan and took me to my first game in 1981 (when I was 6). Also back then when I was getting into football the Giants were an absolute embarassement. They had never played in a super bowl and were terrible. That combined with my dad's season tickets were what did it for me.

How did you become a Pats fan in Wisconsin?

To make a long story short, I liked the Packers but wanted to have a "second favorite" team to root for. I considered several (including - gulp - the Jets!) but picked the Patriots for a number of reasons that I can go over sometime when I have more time to write.

Over time, the Pats just became my "first favorite" team, and I've become less and less of a Packers fan ever since. I think it was 1998 when I pretty much stopped caring about Green Bay altogether. Part of the reason is that all Packer fans ever want to talk about is their history. "We won the first two Super Bowls! We had Vince Lombardi! We're one of the oldest existing pro sports franchises!" It gets old after while. If you want to live in the past, fine. I prefer to live in the present.

Actually, if anything I'm the opposite of a bandwagon fan, because I started losing interest in the Packers after they won Super Bowl 31... :-k

So you're a filthy bandwagon fan just like the rest of them?

It's in the genes. father's been takin me to games since i was 3 years old.

same here. My old man became a Jets fan after Namath won the 1st superbowl for the AFC. If you lived in the area and weren't already a die-hard Giants supporter, you were bound to be a Jets fan thanks to Joe Willy's swagger. My father got season tickets in '72 (the year I was born) and by the time I was five we were already making the trip out to Shea eight times a year. So the Jets are directly tied to some father/son bonding moments and have, over the years, become a part of our family's identity. My son is three and a half and is already a Jets fan--and we'll be continuing the tradition of freezing our asses off for worthless games in December in the coming years.

I agree with both of you guys. My Dad and uncle had season tickets when they were still the Titans. I started going to games in the early 70's as a toddler. My father was really pissed that Hess moved them to Jersey and gave up his season tickets. However, through some connections I got two seats back in the mid-90's and I will leave them in my will to my kids (if and when they arrive).

I also had a scumbag cousin and uncle that were Giants fans and used to rub in the many Jets losses to me over the years. It made it that much easier to hate the little blue and love Gang Green.

The very first piece of professional sports clothing I ever owned was a Jets jacket. It was around '76 (I was 8yrs old) when my mom picked it up for me at the Salvation Army store in Oneonta, NY. I still remember that day because I begged her for it. After that, I kinda just went along with the flow. (Or lack thereof).

True story.

It was christmas eve & I was 12. I was doing a bong hit with my sister while waiting for santa claus. she was 10 but had the body of an 8 yr old & was a really good kisser. A robber broke in to the house & stole our presents. my dad had just stumbled in from a late night out, saw the robber, chased him down the street, grabbed him & threw him under an oncoming bus. christmas was saved thanks to my dad's late night out.

I became a jets fan when Herm became head coach. Every time he throws someone under the bus it reminds me of the christmas that almost wasn't

If that was a Darth Vader Skull Bong, you would of been a Raiders fan now.

Yeah, why root for Favre when you could have been rooting for Drew Bledsoe. #-o

Actually, my story is pretty much the same as Storms. Grew up in Michigan. Only my father grew up in New York and Jersey and was a die hard fan since the days of the Titans. He actually went to the Titans very first game ever. Anyways, he brought us all up as Jets fans. And if I grew up as a Lions fan instead, I'd probably shoot myself.

I had to cheer for them after Broadway Joe and company pulled off the stones shot of the century (The Babe really wasn't calling his shot)and predicted their victory in SB3. That was huge. It was like The NFL's best team playing the Arena League in a championship game at the time.

Then I got transfered to NY/NJ and EVERYBODY was a Giants fan. Made me love the Jets more and hate the Giants worse. They were a combined 23/39 the whole time I lived out east, but I was real used to that growing up a Cub fan- matter a fact I was comfortable laying in it. That is getting old however. To quote the immortal Savage "Theres only one thing that matters - only one - The Lombardy Trophy - everything else is BS". I'm with him.

I can vouch for Joewilly. His sister was a really good kisser. And his father was really fast. I still can't take mass transit without twitching.

I became a Jets fan in 2003 because I liked how their uniforms looked. I'm from Florida and I never liked the Dolphins. I pretty much chose the Jets the same way a person draws up a raffle ticket. Looking at the way this season turned out, I probably should have made a more informed decision.
