Unfounded Rumor: Tim Tebow being blackballed by NFL

Tim Tebow isn't good enough to be a distraction

Is Tim Tebow being blackballed by the NFL? The short and simple answer is that Tebow is not good enough as a player to be a distraction in the NFL, and the media circus around him is a distraction.

There's no question Tebow is one of the biggest media stories as an athlete. Forbes just named him America's most influential athlete. The Onion just named him America's most influential former athlete. He inspired a potential change in Alabama's state law as a high school recruit. He helped lead the Florida Gators to two national championships, including key contributions as a freshman backup. He won the Heisman Trophy.

His play for the Denver Broncos in 2010 and 2011 showed, though, that he is, at best, a work in progress when it comes to throwing the ball at an NFL level. He posted the worst completion percentage in the league. He was sacked an incredible amount of times behind an offensive line that did not have trouble pass-protecting for Kyle Orton (or for Peyton Manning in 2012). The Broncos tried to get around his limitations as best they could by instituting a run-heavy option offense. Tebow's experience should have made him a good fit there, but as long as he's played in an option-oriented scheme, his option decision-making has been relatively poor.

In 2012, the New York Jets tried to find a use for Tebow in the right niche, as a backup who drew occasional use in goal-line and third-down situations. The result was an unsuccessful season. Having Tebow compete against Mark Sanchez only prevented either player from getting into a rhythm and produced perhaps the league's most dysfunctional offense. Tebow barely threw the ball, but not because he didn't have opportunities to make plays in the passing game. He ran the ball much more than he threw it, but his runs were inefficient. After drafting Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, the Jets released Tebow last week.

And now we come to the point where we were. What Tebow has done at the NFL level indicates he does not do many things that can help an NFL team win games. Could he in time? Perhaps. Notwithstanding his flaws as an NFL quarterback, he remains an incredibly popular player, one who has won some games in the NFL thanks to a low-scoring defense and a healthy dose of luck, along with a personal fanbase that will pepper his team with questions and claim he should be starting.

A good contrast with Tebow came in April's draft. The biggest off-the-field distraction in terms of potential prospects was Notre Dame middle linebacker Manti Te'o. His fake girlfriend story earned him a great deal of media attention, very little of it positive. His presence on an NFL team would inevitably produce jokes aimed at him and the team that drafted him. And where he did he go? Early in the second round, precisely where his on-field football talent indicated he should have gone. The San Diego Chargers drafted him because they thought he could fill the void at inside linebacker created by the loss of Takeo Spikes. That was enough to get him drafted pretty high.

So is Tebow really being blackballed? As we just saw with Chris Kluwe, being good earns a player a lot more leeway than not being very good.

No, Tebow is not being blackballed any more than any player who is not great and whose presence disrupts the NFL's "all football, all the time" mentality.

He's stubborn and won't change positions from one he can't play at an elite level. Thats why he isn't playing in the league.

He can't play QB at a good level no less elite level.

Also lets face it the guy wont even play any of the other positions hes been touted for at a good level either.

He was an amazing college football player and everyone knew then he had little chance to make it in the NFL in any capacity.

Punt Protector ? meh.. do teams now get specialists in that category simply because it worked ok for a while with the Jets, for about 2 weeks ? Not enough room on rosters for specialists. He does not have the instincts to be a receiver in the NFL, that much was evident when we saw him go out for 2 passes last year that looked ugly. If a team wants to take the chance on him being the number 1 QB on the roster and are ok with re designing their entire offense to accomodate Tebow he might have a chance but unfortunately no one (not even the crappy teams like Jacksonville) wants to do that.

Hes a likeable kid and I really wish there was a place for him but unfortunately there is not. He gets more attention as a born again christian than he does as a football player and Im pretty sure God does not take sides in any game.

Were backup QB's banned?

He'd really only be a suitable backup on a team running the read-option. And even then, his completion rate is crap, his sack rate is crap, etc. The entire league has passed on him for a reason: he's not nearly as good a football player as his reputation would have you believe. If he were any good, he'd be on a roster. He's not, because teams would rather develop QBs with better natural skills, and TEs who have played TE or WR in college.

If he really wants to play football, he should take the backup job in Canada. Learn the game, and maybe get a shot. His style of play is well suited for their pass on every down on a field the size of an industrial farm game.

I'd be a little shocked if he doesn't end up in a Patriots uniform at some point. Josh McDaniels is there, Brady is too old to run sneaks at the goal line, and Belichick would love to disgrace the Jets by letting Timmy score TDs against us. That's really a perfect situation for both parties.

The circus is Hearst Corporation and The Walt Disney Company masonary views of bringing a christian down in America.

Yes, you are DEFINITELY right.  It's a conspiracy against Christians.  It has nothing to do with the fact that he cannot play QB on an NFL level.  :sign0098:

Report: Belichick “hates” Tebow as a player
Posted by Mike Florio on May 9, 2013, 11:35 AM EDT
tebow4.jpg?w=189Getty Images

It widely has been assumed that, if/when Tim Tebow abandons his insistence on playing quarterback in the NFL, the Patriots and coach Bill Belichick would welcome him into the stable of versatile offensive weapons who are capable of lining up in multiple spots, allowing Tom Brady to spark up the no-huddle offense whenever he please.

Assume again.

According to Mike Silver of Yahoo! Sports, Belichick “hates” Tebow as a player.  Silver cites unnamed “organizational sources” for the report, adding that the team “wouldn’t like the circus that comes with” having Tebow on the roster.

The Tebowmania angle will make it harder for any team to justify giving him a chance.  Though he arguably has the skill to be a backup or scout-team read-option quarterback, the distraction that comes with having him on the team will nudge most teams toward other possible choices.

“You don’t want to put up with the circus,” an unnamed AFC head coach told Silver.

“He seems like a great guy to have on a team, and I’d be tempted to bring him in as our backup,” an NFC head coach told Silver.  “But it’s just not worth dealing with all the stuff that comes with it.”

Silver is troubled by the appearance that Tebow is being blackballed, a victim of his own popularity.  Still, a common theme throughout the 2013 offseason has been distractions.  Whatever the cause or the reason, a player who attracts attention for reasons other than excellent performance on the field becomes less desirable when compared to another player of roughly equal skill.

That’s the other thing that hurts Tebow.  Regardless of his uncanny abilities in crunch time of a game, he stinks in practice and for the most part in the first three quarters of play.  If he’s brought in solely to be a backup, he’ll languish because he won’t, for example, be able to deliver accurate passes on a consistent basis to practice players who need to practice catching catchable balls.

Any team that truly wants Tebow would have to be willing to make him the starting quarterback, and also to be willing to tolerate the reality that, from Wednesday through Saturday, he’ll struggle.  There currently seems to be no football team outside of Omaha willing to take that chance.

Thx you very much. So you must agree with my view along with the article that Tebow isn't good enough to warrant this attention place upon him by the media right?

No, he'd be out of work because he's not good enough. We have news stories about it because of the cult.

Kyle Orton

Luke McCown

Matt Leinart

Byron Leftwich

Graham Harrell

Charlie Whitehurst

Tyler Thigpen

Dan Orlovsky

Bruce Gradkowski

David Carr

Derek Anderson

He's better than all of them. This is not even the list of third stringers, these are backups. Say he's not better than these guys, go ahead, say you'd rather have any one of those guys leading your team instead of Tebow (as bad as he is) so you can reveal yourself to be either a liar or a fool. Or are you going to just drool 46% all day? I'd have to say pretty brave of you taking a position you know you'll never have to defend. I'd also say it was pretty funny how quiet you were last year after Sanchez fell on his ass. Tebow deserves no chance while Sanchez has had four ******* years or worse quarterbacking/leadership. Right.

This is not me saying Tebow is great or it's a conspiracy against Christians. I could give a **** for Christians - and Tim Tebow's football career for that matter. I just hate when logic is twisted to fit someone's agenda while they spout sh*t that they know they will never be disproven on.

Let the man be, he's not a Jet and he is gone. Everyone played a part in killing the career of the one man we all could have enjoyed watching run head first into the end zone. How many other QBs do that? None. It's an old style of football that's too risky and doesn't produce enough points for most GMs but its damn enjoyable to watch. Will we ever see a Battle for a first down like the one in Chicago when got hit by Briggs, another Bear, then finally Urlacher gets over there and slams him back. What about the run up the right side against the Jets when he blows by Revis. That is the stuff I will miss.

It he truly is a determined dude he will get back in but he will need to keep practicing on his own. That will be harder and harder to do as time passes. If he keeps practicing and stays in shape someone will give him a shot in 2014, and if not? It will be a long time before we see another QB run straight up for an eight yard touch down against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Better than them at what? Intangibles? Because he's not better than the vast majority of them as a backup QB in the NFL. Tebow simply does not currently have the capability to be a conventional QB in the NFL. If you want to believe in him 100%, you need to build your offense around him. You can't install him into an offense. The only teams that could potentially use him as a backup are the ones running a read-option offense with their starter, and they all decided to pass on Tebow as well.

And I really don't understand what the hell your talking about my point never being proven. The NFL appears to be done with the man - at least for now. Not a single team is interested. All it takes is one team to like a player enough to keep in in the league, but all 32 teams have decided to pass (something Tebow sucks at! hey now!). What more proof do you need?

I hope he decides to take his congregation to Canada. I really think he might be able to develop up there. Maybe even get another shot in the NFL a la Doug Flutie. But he's not good enough to be on an NFL roster today. That much is clear.

Of Coruse he is not good enough, of course. He only took the Broncos to the second round of the playoffs...

Of course, his best current offer is to compete for a backup job in the CFL.

Orton?

Yes, I would actually prefer Orton over Tebow.  Don't get me wrong....I like Tebow, I just don't think he is that good at being a NFL QB.  If he would forget this QB position I'm sure teams can find use for him elsewhere and he would probably have a job right now

Not that I enjoy agreeing with Florio, but he's totally correct.  Anyone bringing him in would be doing so for him to be the backup.  In that backup role, arguably every one of the QBs on the list Gastineau Lives compiled are better than Tebow, in addition to their lack of media distraction.  A backup QB works with receivers to get them practice time catching the ball, and if he is that far off on his throws in practice - which he apparently was doing both in Denver and Florham Park - then he's killing valuable practices and makes the receivers' jobs more difficult and slows their development.

However if we're talking about a starting job for an extended period of time (more than half a season), I could see going with Tebow over a number of those guys even though I only skimmed the list for a half a second.

In live action is where his intangibles are valuable.  In practice a guy with great intangibles and little else is an enormous waste of everybody's time, including the coaches who have to teach him how to play as a conventional QB for practices, which he has seemed incapable of doing.

Think the Jets players don't know how bad Sanchez is? Of course they do. With all his goofiness and podium talk to the contrary and his creepy tattoo I'm sure Rex does as well.  But they were behind Sanchez because they see a bunch of footballs in practice land on the turf nowhere near their intended targets.  I'll at least throw Sanchez that bone, that even his off-target throws tend to land near the target area.  Being off by 2-3 yards means the pass is barely incomplete or it requires a circus catch that prevents additional YAC.  Being off by 5-10 yards means nothing is being practiced except the center-to-QB snap.
