Mike Goodson Arrested: MERGED (UPDATED WITH CHARGES)

As I stated this was an extreme example but the point remains. I was replying to Larz who was complaining about said double standard and trying to point out where this fails. I have no problem with the Jets waiting for this run its course. The other 2 players who were cut were going to cut anyway so I don't see where the problem is.

He should be cut because we spent the last 6 years with the spineless CPA running things and you can make an example out of him. He's not at all worth the trouble as a player.

So you're saying Idz needs to tailor his stye and management based on the actions of the previous GM? Couldn't disagree more. All you have right now are accusations, the most serious of which more than likely will be dropped. So what you'll have left in all likelihood is possession of a small amount of weed. Big deal. Not worth eating a million$ before seeing what the kid can do on the field in a weak position on the team.

No I didn't defend Hoozits and Whatzis because they were just trying out-essentially undergoing a job interview process. During a job interview they can shoot you down for just anything at all.

Goodson signed a contract. The Jets made it clear that he was part of the team, and money was contracted for and a certified check was given. Now they can't shoot him down for just anything at all unless they want to pay, or unless Goodson breaches. Or unless there is some specific clause in his contract which says that an arrest of this type constitutes a breach.

His connection to the gun in the car, if any, has not been established. That's what trials are for. He had a small amount of weed on him. If the Jets want to let him go because they have established themselves as the zero tolerance team in regards to marijuana, fine, though since 52% of the country now favors legalization that might not be as necessary as they think.

http://www.pewresearch.org/daily-number/partisans-disagree-on-legalization-of-marijuana-but-agree-on-law-enforcement-policies/

If you think it's necessary to cut Goodson  to establish that this regime does things different than previous ones, okay. But get ready to pay.

The entire conversation is because of the gun and being arrested.  Most people wouldn't care if he got busted for a little pot. It probably would be as much of a story as the guys who were cut.  Goodson is a nobody that most fans around the NFL never heard of.    Do we know who had the gun?  No.  The assumption is the guy with the record.  But who knows.  The fact they arrested Goodson says nobody confessed or he did have the gun.

Most of these things seem to drag on and we never hear the truth.  Then again,  what would have happened if OJ Simpson were an active player and the assumption was he murdered his wife and her friend.   He got away with it, but a lot of people still assume he did it.   I guess let everything play it self out and who cares if the truth every really comes out.    As long as he can play.  Except Goodson isn't exactly a renown running back.

Um, yeah. That's what you do when you take over as the head of a organization that has been run into the ground by the previous manager, Tanny made a mess, was fired and that's why John has the job. You don't think the meetings essentially boiled down to "How the **** would you fix this"? Having a solid philosophy is great and he should stick with it but our locker room is a mess because of a lack of accountability at any level of the organization. John needs to be the adult this team so desperately needs.

There's still plenty of ways to maintain control of a locker-room and franchise without cutting all the talented players for their blatant dumbassery.  Looking past the fact that he hasn't been convicted of anything, there has been plenty of franchises who've dealt with similar or worse situations and gone onto keep the player and have success in doing so; Ray Lewis and his accessory to murder/obstruction charges in Baltimore, Big Ben and his sexual assault charges in Pittsburgh, Tank Johnson and his 6 gun charges in Chicago (dude had to get persmission to leave the state to play in the super bowl) and Marvin Harrison with his gun charges.  All of these guys charged with and some convicted of some serious crimes went on to be a part of "classy" organizations and went to the super bowl.

No one is arguing that Goodson isn't an idiot for putting himself in that situation, but we probably should wait to see how it plays out.  If it turns out he had no idea the gun was in the car, not really sure he needs to be cut to make an example.   If it's his gun, that's a whole new ball game, but acting before the details are done seems quite foolish.

As far as the first paragraph, neither is really correct.  The gun was not on either of them, it was found in the car while searching it after the arrest, which was initially for DUI / possession.  The point there being it's possible he was completely unaware of it.  I'm not even really defending him, but rather pointing out the argument of some of those who are.

As far as the possibility of cutting him goes, it may still happen, but it's not happening now.  The difference with those two no-names is the Jets didn't owe them a penny, so could send them packing without any problems at all.  When it comes to Goodson, they've already paid him out a bonus and so even if they want to cut him, they're best served waiting until he's convicted in order to be able to recoup that money.  Besides, this is the NFL we're talking about; if he's not convinced, by the time that all rolls around, nobody is even going to give a crap about this anymore.  At that point, he'll stay on the team without anyone thinking twice about it.

Goodson’s first hearing conflicts with Jets’ minicamp

Posted by Mike Florio on May 21, 2013, 10:29 AM EDT

Jets running back Mike Goodson faces gun and drug charges that could, under the weapons portion of the case, put him behind bars for a mandatory minimum sentence of three years.

For the Jets, the challenge becomes what to do with Goodson while the court process plays itself out.

On Monday, owner Woody Johnson tiptoed around the crux of the problem.  If they cut Goodson now, he walks away with a $1 million signing bonus that can’t be recovered.  They can get some of the money back, and in turn can obtain cap relief, only if they let the process play out.

The key date in the process comes on June 12, when Goodson will have a pre-trial hearing.  As pointed out by Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, that falls in the middle of the team’s mandatory minicamp.  If Goodson misses practice to attend the hearing, the Jets could penalize Goodson, at a minimum with a fine.

The problem for the Jets would be the plain language of Article 4, Section 9 of the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement.  While the revised terms expand the situations in which all or a portion of a player’s signing bonus can be recovered, the provision makes no reference to partial reimbursement arising from a missed mandatory minicamp practice.  Instead, the forfeiture process begins in training camp, and applies more forcefully in the regular season.

But the Jets can’t recover money from Goodson unless he’s still on the roster.  That’s why the Falcons never released Mike Vick after he was incarcerated for dogfighting in 2007; to recover bonus money paid to Vick (and to get the cap credit that goes along with it), the Falcons had to hold their nose and refrain from cutting Vick.

For the Jets, the far better approach to the Goodson conundrum would be to stop channeling Clark Kent and explain in blunt, candid terms that there’s only one way to make a player answer financially for off-field misconduct — by keeping him on the roster while the legal process unfolds.

Of course, that kind of candor could open the Jets up to criticism that they’re more concerned about money than doing the right thing.  But if the plan will be to keep Goodson around in order to eventually recover money from him, why not remove the confusion regarding the reason for not cutting him loose?

The right thing to do here is to do nothing until it is established exactly what he did.

It is very possible that Goodson is guilty of no more then getting drunk, smoking a bit of weed, and passing out. If every player who did that was cut, the NFL would have very few players  A first offense for that doesn't even get you suspended.

If he had a gun with hollow point bullets on him.  Different story

Backup quarterback Josh Portis was released by the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, the day after news of his arrest for suspicion of driving under the inflence earlier this month became public.

Portis faces a court arraignment next week after his May 5 arrest.

After being pulled over for allegedly driving 80 miles per hour in a 60 mph zone, Portis performed poorly in field sobriety tests and later registered blood-alcohol content of .092% and .078% in breath tests, authorities said. The legal limit in Washington state is .08%.

Portis took part in the Seahawks' first off-season workout on Monday.

In his second stint with the Seahawks, Portis reportedly signed a two-year contract worth close to $1 million after Seattle traded former backup Matt Flynn to Oakland.

Portis was expected to compete with Jerrod Johnson for the No. 3 quarterback spot behind starter Russell Wilson and new backup Brady Quinn. Neither Portis nor Johnson has any NFL game experience.

Idz should take notes.

Reckless endangerment and DUI    >>>   getting caught with marijuana on yourself.  Goodson's representatives came out today and said they are not pleading guilty and most likely will prove he had no knowledge of the gun in the car.  I'm apt to believe them as it's easier to see the man with past gun-charges and who's responsible for the car as the one who is most likely tied to the gun, compared to the guy in the passenger's seat.  If that's the case, hardly a precedent I'd want to be setting to cut every player in their first drug offence.

Actually, Seattle is doing the same exact thing Idzik did.  They're making an example out of some roster bottom-feeder while keeping around other guys on the roster who get themselves in trouble because they're deemed more important.  Portis was fighting for a 3rd string QB spot and the Seahawks had no financial commitment to him, it meant nothing for them to cut him.

If anything, Idzik handled it better as he cut the two nobodies who got in trouble immediately after they did, while Seattle tried to ignore it and waited around for 3 weeks after the event happened, and did nothing until they started getting sh*t for yet another of their players failing a drug test and THEN made an example out of another guy.

Lawyer: Goodson to plead not guilty, gun wasn’t his
Posted by Darin Gantt on May 21, 2013, 3:20 PM EDT

The lawyer representing Jets running back Mike Goodson said his client would plead not guilty to the five gun and drug charges against him.

And according to Seth Walder of the New York Daily News, Goodson told the Jets that the gun in the car wasn’t his.

“Mike’s charged with possession of that gun, but we’re confident we’re going to be able to show (the gun wasn’t his),” attorney Tony Fusco said.

Both Goodson’s lawyer and the lawyer for the driver of the vehicle Goodson was in said that their clients could escape jail time, because a second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun would be hard to make stick.

Joe Afflito, the attorney for Garant Evans (the driver of the car), said the second degree charge requires “proof that you had a weapon and that you were going to use it to harm a person or property.”

“This gun was found in the car so I don’t know where that comes from,” Afflito said. “According to the newspaper reports, they were picked up on the side of the highway unconscious.”

A third-degree charge comes with a suggested sentence involving jail time, but that’s not a certainty.

While avoiding prison can only be considered a positive, Goodson’s far from in the clear. The Jets haven’t said much about his situation, and are wise to wait to find out more

Good points B.G. but you left out the 2 yr million dollar contract Seattle is willing to eat to flush their bum off the roster....... I know the situation with Goodson is fluid, ongoing and we are not privy to all the facts. I still think Idzik may still choose to sh!t can this guy and that might be the right choice. He is replaceable. Especially on a team that is rebuilding.

Oh, I don't disagree he's replaceable, and I think if convicted, the Jets will happy to wait for him to just miss one day of something that's required and then go after his bonus money and send him packing.  Truth be told, I wouldn't be surprised if that bonus money is the one thing keeping him around at this point.  I can't remember if it was in this thread or not, but I saw a good point made in an article that compared this to the Falcons situation with Vick all those years back, where they kept him on the roster for the express purpose of being able to go after his money.  That said, on the flip side if he isn't convicted of anything, I imagine this will have all calmed down enough by then that the Jets will probably keep him, even if they were initially planning to cut him.

As far as the Hawks go, my impression from what I've read is that $2 million was the total contract and there were no guarantees in it (which would make sense for someone competing to be #3 QB), so it made no difference to them monetarily.  Even if there were guarantees, I imagine it was a pretty insignificant amount.  Although I could be wrong about that, but that was just my impression between that article and another I had seen about it.

The guy should get nailed for DUI 100%, but the thing that I find funny is the car isn't registered to any of the two guys actually in the car.  Can you imagine borrowing a buddy's car just to get home and all of a sudden you get pulled over and then have "your" car searched to find a gun in it...try explaining that sh*t.  I would imagine the best-case scenario would be the gun is actually registered to whomever actually owns the car.

For what it's worth; saw an article online about a Texas state resident who was pulled over driving through NJ in order to move, the cops seeing his gun-case, which gives them the right to search the car, found unloaded guns in their case that were registered in Texas.  Dude is getting 3-5. NJ State Superior Court parrots something like, “The Second Amendment does not create ‘a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose.’”

Truth be told, I wouldn't be surprised if that bonus money is the one thing keeping him around at this point.

So the prospect of an injured Ivory with Joey Mc and Powell racking up some mid field yards and no touchdowns isn't scary? If I'm responsible for gathering the talent that helps the Jets win football games, I'm pretty uneasy with that picture and then I think of Sanchez and call my doc for some Xanax.
