Blackout
Starting quarterback Everett Golson is no longer enrolled at Notre Dame, the university confirmed in an email to ESPN.com on Saturday night. More on Notre Dame football Everything Notre Dame football, from recruiting to news to game coverage, is available from ESPN.com's Matt Fortuna in his Notre Dame football blog. • More: ESPN Chicago's college blog "Everett is not enrolled at the university. Federal law and our own polices preclude us from discussing specifics," spokesman Dennis Brown said in an email. The Chicago Tribune, citing two sources, reported that Golson is no longer enrolled at the university due to a resident life violation. Golson started 11 games for the Fighting Irish last season as a redshirt freshman, leading the team to the Discover BCS National Championship, where it lost to Alabama to finish a 12-1 season. He completed 187-of-318 passes for 2,405 yards and 12 touchdowns with six interceptions. Golson also rushed for 298 yards and six scores. WNDU-TV earlier reported that Golson no longer was enrolled at Notre Dame. Former Fighting Irish QB Gunner Kiel transferred to Cincinnati last month. Senior Tommy Rees is the most experienced quarterback enrolled, with 18 career starts. Fourth-year junior Andrew Hendrix and Malik Zaire, a spring enrollee, are also on the depth chart. Zaire was the sixth-ranked QB prospect in the Class of 2013, according to the ESPN 300. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/9312336/everett-golson-leaves-notre-dame-fighting-irish

CrazyCarl40
Leaving isn't the appropriate word here. More like expelled or kicked out of. It's the catch 22 of Notre Dame and why they'll never be a perennial power. What Golson did is probably a slap on the wrist at an SEC school. Depending on what it is exactly, every school in the country takes that seriously. Except Miami.

They lose for a plethora of reasons, most of them are football reasons, but there is most definitely a correlation between their academic standards and recruiting capabilities. It's pretty well documented.

Maybe having the largest following in college football, an exclusive deal with NBC that guarantees mass exposure and an independent schedule that allows you the easiest path to a BCS game can can help them recruit, but who knows man? The odds are really stacked in everyone else's favor. I'm sure Manti T'eo would have had the same Heisman hype if he played for Brian Kelly at his old school, Cincinnati. BTW they have the #3 ranked recruiting class in the country this year

CrazyCarl40
ND is a joke. Tommy Rees beat up a cop. He's also terrible at football. Beat up a cop is a stretch. He was decent when he filled in last season. He doesn't have Eifert anymore and they lost their top 3 backs so the ND offense is definitely behind the 8 ball. Not sure why they are a joke though. That #3 recruitment class of the 18 4-5 star recruits making it up there are 11 and most likely 12 of them that will be playing offense. That's a haul that includes a 5 star RB btw http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/commitments/2013/notredame-104 Poor Notre Dame

SayNoToDMC
Ridiculous arguments like things aren't fair for Notre Dame gunna fall apart, because, like, there's these thing called facts. You had as many 5 star recruits as Alabama and two more 4 Star recruits. So I don't know what magical disadvantage you have that makes it unfair for you to be a perennial power house, other then hiring sh*t coaches like Charlie Wise

I'm just saying that Notre Dame holds their players to a higher standard than most other schools and it has an impact on their ability to recruit less than great academic players. That's their own prerogative. It's not unfair, but the criticism of them mostly is.

As somebody pointed out Tommy Rees assaulted an officer and is probably your starting QB this year. I'm pretty sure that's frowned upon in SEC country also, you make it sounds like they run a squeaky clean program. If you where a BYU fan and your players had to follow those rules I'd buy this line of BS about recruiting woe's.

I simply stated the fact that they miss out on some players because they have ridiculous academic standards. That's all. I'm sure it's the same at Stanford and other places like that. Notre Dame's are just higher than everyone else's. I never said they run a squeaky clean program. That much is for sure. I'm not sure anyone does. They have their flaws. Notre Dame got maybe the best haul this year outside USC of the higher end offensive and defensive talent so to make the claim that your academic superiority is somehow holding you back from competing cause one guy got caught cheating is silly. The only reason you couldn't compete is 10 years if bad coaching.

I agree on the bad coaching, for sure, but don't think for a second they don't miss out of guys who might otherwise go there, who struggle academically or don't want to put in the effort in the classroom.
