Sanchez is going to be the starter

Geno has potential but he just isn't ready.  Sanchez threw the terrible pick 6 but rebounded the rest of the game.  You are graded on everything so the pick 6 is part of it.  But that last drive and the TD pass to Cumberland was on the money.

Morhinweg has a real system, the receivers are open finally.  They have to go with a veteran to start so Mark will get one last shot.

Speaking of which the Tampa game is so damn important for him.  His career is basically riding on it.  But you heard it here first, Mark Sanchez will be the starter when the season opens...

Kellen Winslow broke up a possible second pick 6 and defensive coverages(which Mark still can't read) are vanilla in the preseason. I do agree he'll be the week one starter, I'd rather Revis take his frustration out on him anyway.

I watched that play a few times, hard to say if it would have been intercepted either way but no doubt, it was a terrible pass.  No denying that.

Also about Tampa and Revis.  The Jets game plan is simple.  Wherever Revis is, don't throw.

The Jets have no # 1 receiver.  It is debatable if they even have a # 2.  You want to put Revis on Stephen Hill?  No problem we will throw to one of our other marginal wide receivers.  Revis on Braylon?  Sure thing, we have another guy who is just as average that we can target, lol.

Not having a true # 1 WR has so few benefits.  But we just found the consolation prize.  :)

If Mark Sanchez does indeed start he better win & limit his turnover ratio. If he throws a interception to Revis week 1 then it would have been a mistake to start him.

More Touchdown passes like the one to Cumberland that sanchez threw the more of a chance he will probably start. He just can't throw redzone picks and over throw recievers. I think Geno will start week 4 or 5

He is the one who tipped it to the defender in the 1st place.

idk about this. yesterday was geno's first nfl game action ever. i will reserve judgment until after we see more of them this preseason. while the drive that sanchez led for the td was decent, he threw another horrible pick 6 and almost had another that the defender dropped. sanchez is looking alot like his same old self.

He always will.

Geno is raw as hell but damn he throws a nice ball right were the receiver can catch and run with it.

his 5-yard out to the d-linemen is probably the best i've ever seen. perfect placement, incredibly catchable and almost always goes for a td

That's my point man.  If we can get the other team to fall down Mark would be money all game.  Other than the pass Geno had knocke down he threw nice quic passes with really good touch.  Weird thing is it also makes me want to see Mark play more right now and Geno less.  I think the kid could be pretty damn good once he gets acclimated to the game. Well that and $2.75 cents worth of sports tape to tape his ankles.

What exactly is the upside of this team starting Sanchez? We know exactly how awful he is as you saw last night. He probably should've had 2 pick 6s if Winslow didn't pancake glover quin btw.

What's the upside of letting Geno Smith start, get blitzed nearly every play and take a beating? Let Sanchez take the beating for a few weeks and then hand the reigns over. Geno Smith was the 3rd best QB last night. He needs to learn and grow.

The only advantage is letting Geno marinate a little bit on the sidelines before he gets thrown into the starting lineup. He did not look ready last night. I'd like to see him get the start next week, see if he can make a jump. But if he doesn't look clearly better, he should watch and learn (yes, what not to do) for a little while. It's good for him, and if it's good for him, it's good for the Jets in the long term.

He does look ahead of him. Geno really seems to have bought into the "don't beat himself" idea which showed the way he played. He was incredibly conservative.

Sanchez was decent on the whole and unlike Geno played with a bit of aggression, but that throw just sums him up, it's a matter of when rather than if and always has been with him. Him crediting the defensive play afterwards really doesn't make it any better, ffs he threw it straight to him.

I wanted to see Geno week 1, but I'm starting to agree with those saying let Sanchez take the lumps while Geno develops a little more, by all accounts he's made pretty good progress since the spring so there's no need to stunt that by throwing him to the wolves. Whether the team can be decent or not I don't know, but this offense is going to be a trainwreck regardless.

It's a matter of protecting Smith. His development is the priority this season above anything.

If you put him against the top defences we face early on, as raw as he looks, the fans will be calling for McElroy by week 8.

Agreed. I hate to say it because Rex said it to death last year, but from what I saw last night, right now Sanchez gives the team the best chance to win.

Geno doesn't look like he's ready yet.

So you want to start a guy who had 3 or 4 series and should have had at least 2 INTs?  Geno was accurate.  I don't know if his primaries were open on his plays, but his only incompletion was a blocked pass.  Sorry, this was Geno's first taste of pro action.  I think he stood up all right.  Captain Stupid  did had his usual panic attack. Then afterwards he says "plays like this happen." Very flip.  Yes, they happen----to you, Mark.  Not to decent, and certainly not to top flight, QBs.  Then Rex says he was too preoccupied with the D  and did not see the whole play.  Head coach?  Ha.  Or was he just dodging a difficult question, Max? We can say Geno is not ready. He just dipped his toe in the water.  But why is Mark still not ready?

Well, Sanchez gives the team almost no chance to win considering he regularly spots opponents 6 points.

I do agree with you that Geno doesn't appear ready.  I'm of the mind that if he doesn't outplay substantially outplay Sanchez in the next three weeks, throw Mark out there.  He'll fail and Geno will get some time to continue to adjust to the pro game.

Sanchez has to start and I can not remember the last time the Jets have ever run a good screen play.

Geno starting with a average line, subpar running game and a bunch of #3 receivers won't help him in the long term. Confidence matters.

Yes because after the first few weeks there is a rule that goes into effect where you can't blitz a rookie QB every play. He won't learn by sitting.

Geno is not ready yet and besides Mark's continuing problems with screen passes, I felt like he played well. The weird thing is that Geno seemed to have the most trouble with the read option plays. I'm not sure what made it a priority to install that stuff. He also locked in on one WR. Getting the ball deep is going to be a problem if he can't look off the safety, even with a strong arm. The good news is that Geno has come far in this offense in a short period of time. Perhaps he could be ready at some point this season - but just not right now.

As others have said before, this competition has always been Geno vs Geno and whether he starts will be based entirely upon whether he is ready.  Unfortunately, there's a chance that the answer to that will be no.  That said, Sanchez is clearly still an absolutely awful QB.  He managed to throw yet another pick 6 to a DL (btw, can anyone honestly say they've ever seen another QB in all of NFL history who has the penchant for that like Sanchez does?), had a second interception dropped and even despite having one decent drive in the end, his presence on the field ultimately netted the Jets a grand total of... 0 points.  And for those who heard his little sideline interview, it told you every reason I will absolutely never be able to respect him.  He was asked about the pick and his response contained 2 parts:  one was how it didn't really matter (seriously?) and the second was an attempt to throw Bohanon under the bus for the play.  It's really pathetic, he's everything that a so-called leader shouldn't be.

Truth be told, McElroy was the best QB on the field for the Jets last night by a pretty wide margin, it's just a damn shame he's got absolutely no arm whatsoever.

This. 2013 is a lost cause beyond  finding out what players are salvageable for 2014. This team is 6 wins max. Only reason not to start Smith is because you are giving Sanchez the final length of rope to hang himself while Smith acclimates to the NFL. Smith may not be the answer, but we have to know before next year's free agency and draft if QB is a need.

Sanchez nearly threw a 2nd pick six, which was dropped by another dlineman.  You're right though.  He will start, and we will continue to be terrible this year.  Because, while he will make some plays, he has shown no ability to cut down his mistakes.  It'll be interesting to see what happens after his first home disaster, as the fans have no tolerance for him anymore.

We saw a lot about Geno Smith tonight.  It looks like he has the physical ability to play.  His passes were on the money.  Crisp and with nice arm strength.  He did what he was asked to do.  Unfortunately, he was asked to do just about nothing.  McElroy had three times the playbook that Smith did.  They don't trust him yet, and maybe he doesn't merit that trust.  Impossible to know.  He was also victimized by a penalty on every drive, I believe, but that doesn't change the fact that he was kept on a tremendously short leash.

Because if there's one thing we can count on, it's Sanchez's abilities to avoid defenders.
