McElroy Released

The idea that we would keep him on the roster to mentor Geno was retarded. That's what coaches are for and they don't consume a roster spot.

Yup, and now after B Oba.... I mean M Mehnta's propaganda piece didn't help him keep his source what will he make up to keep his agenda going?

So, Simms as #2? and is Sanchez suiting up?

I can't imagine they're keeping Harrell.

This might mean 1 of 2 things, either Sanchez started to throw today, or the Jets are working on a contract with a cut veteran QB like V Young, or Something.

Yeah.  The Bucs.  McElroy has more intel on him (in his head) than any of our "starting" QBs and most of the coaches.

Good point.

Particularly with a new O the Jets were very secretive about in TC

Edit: Wait a second, as a vet if he is on the Bucs roster opening day, isn't his salary guaranteed?

If Sanchez can't dress, I think they'll go with Smith and Simms, with Kerley as the emergency #3.

The New York Jets have released Greg McElroy as they move toward their 53-man roster limit, paving the way for Matt Simms to remain as a quarterback behind Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith, according to team and league sources.

McElroy, a seventh-round pick in 2011, had been listed consistently as third on the team's depth chart but Simms took advantage of opportunities afforded him due to injuries that sidelined McElroy in practice and for the final two preseason games.

Simms, an undrafted free agent out of Tennessee and the son of former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms, completed 74.6 percent of his passes in preseason and finished Thursday night's preseason game by completing 33 of 44 passes for 285 yards. He drew praise from head coach Rex Ryan, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and quarterback coach David Lee.

McElroy missed the last three preseason games because of a sprained left knee. He was hoping to play in the final game, but he aggravated the injury in practice. The Jets still have four quarterbacks on the roster, the fourth being recently-signed Graham Harrell. The former Green Bay Packers backup arrived Wednesday and played only one snap (a kneel down) Thursday night against the Philadelphia Eagles.

McElroy was thrust into the Jets' quarterback circus last season, when he came off the bench to pull out a win over the Arizona Cardinals. Two weeks later, McElroy, moved past Tim Tebow on the depth chart, starting for the benched Sanchez. McElroy was sacked 11 times by the San Diego Chargers and suffered a concussion, hiding it from the team for a few days.

Information from ESPN.com's Rich Cimini was used in this report.

The guy has a big mouth and a weak arm for a backup QB great move , Sims look ok , nice strong arm the type we need in the winter time ,Geno has a strong are too but he should not start week 1 , he look terrible in the preseason  Sims look better
