Sources say Parcells is considering retirementESPN.com news services

At age 64, the toll of another long season has Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells privately contemplating a final retirement -- even as team owner Jerry Jones is urging the coach to sign a contract extension.

A turbulent season has Cowboys coach Bill Parcells considering another retirement.

Sources tell ESPN's Chris Mortensen that the death of Parcells' brother at midseason is one of the events that has triggered the coach's thoughts of retirement.

If Parcells stays in Dallas, it's because he truly likes the team he has assembled, even though his work is not complete.

The Cowboys (9-6) won a 24-20 thriller against the Carolina Panthers on Saturday and are still alive for a playoff berth.

Dallas needs to win its final regular-season game against St. Louis to have any shot at earning one of the NFC's wild-card spots.

Parcells didn't berate his team after a 35-7 loss to the Redskins last week. He figured that approach would only make things worse for a team already feeling bad enough.

"When everybody else is killing them, it would be nice if somebody tried to lift them up," Parcells said. "The week before last they were saying that it was one of the greatest wins we'd had here against Kansas City. Now, and I don't know if this type of thing happens in Charlotte, but West of the Mississippi it's either outhouse or castle."

I guess the cowboy players better get ready for the man in the mirror poem.

Typical of this selfish fat ass to leak that he may retire at seasons end when his team is in the midst of a playoff race. But what do you expect from a guy who was scheming his way out of New England when his team was prepping for the super bowl....

That's it guys blast the guy who rebuilt a disaster of a franchise and brought them further than anyone has in almost 25 years. No wonder this franchise is what it is. Dumb fans who support a moron like Herm but blast a HOFer like BP.

RSJ-I have said numerous times that I respect what Parcells did for this franchise, and am thankful for that.

That being said, the manner in which he left, and then subsequently reneged on what he was telling us, well, that is something I don't have to accept.

Parcells is a mercenary. He will make the situation better, but, as soon as he feels a little pressure, he will high tail it.

Some people stay and battle the situation they created, Parcells is a guy that will run. History has proven that.

Was that directed at me? I think Herm sucks.

Parcells is a fat, selfish, ego maniac. If the attention is not on himself he is miserable. He is gonna love all this "is he gonna stay or retire" talk for the rest of the season. The attention is on tuna the rest of the way, just the way he wants it. Now he is as happy as a pig in sh!t...When Belly left us in 99 and Woody asked him to come back he dragged on the whole fiasco for WEEKS until he finally decided that he was gonna stay "retired." He just wanted to hog up the back pages for a few more weeks.... When the attention fades away from him he brings it right back upon himself. That is the biggest reason why he came back to coach the boys. If you look at Parcells' demeanor on the sidelines during games and during his press conferences he is screaming "I dont want to be doing this." HIs teams are as sloppy and undisciplined as they have ever been. Parcells just doesnt have that punch to him anymore. He is a tired, worn down, old man. But taking on the Cowboys job was going to put the spotlight back on his fat @ss so he was game.

Good coach, but the guy is a scumbag.

This is so inaccurate it is not even funny. Parcells has had to rebuild his coaching staff. The one in new england was 100% his. Parcells is a genius as a manager and a leader.

What a ridiculous excuse! ANd you pretty much admitted that Parcells just is not that great without Belly. Parcells put together a VETERAN coaching staff around him. Mike Zimmer was already an accomplised D coordinator in Dallas when Parcells arrived. Sean Peyton was an accomplished offensive coordinator with the Giants, Mo Carthon had plenty of coaching experience from his days with teh jets and browns before jumping to Dallas with the Tuna. THat excuse is complete BS. And if Parcells is such a "genius" as you proclaim him to be rebuilding his staff shouldnt have been such a problem.

Parcell with belly = great coach

Parcells without belly = good coach

Parcells is a genius as a manager and leader

Yea, the same genius who thought he could win with a 41 year old Vinny Testaverde last year.

I see what you're saying. #-o

Merry Christmas.

Obviously you never managed people before. You are only as good as your supporting cast. Now you need to be able train your staff and get them up to your level. And you need to be able to decide if your supporting cast is capable and make quick decisions to get rid of the ones that do not fit into your program. Obviously Parcells is not as good without Belicheck withwhom he brought into the league as a baby and turned into the coach he is today. Mo Carthon was not in the same roll with the

Jets as he was with the Cowboys. Parcells saw him as capable of handling the OC roll and loves him like a son. That is why he wanted Mo Carthon to go to Cleveland where he would work with Rac and get a shot at a HC job sooner than sticking around with Dallas. He was really a RB coach in dallas and sean peyton was OC. As far as the Testeverde signing goes I'm not 100% sure that the 6-10 season was Vinny's fault last year. Vinny played well down the stretch once he had a running game. The Dallas defense was really the demise of that team and not Vinny. If BP made one mistake it was that he did not blow up that defense the minute he arrived in Dallas. When he arrived it was not his style D and he trusted in Mike Zimmer's opion that it would work. Then after it failed miserably he blew it up. The Dallas defense is the youngest in the NFL and the best of all young defenses. Only two starters are over 24 years old. Just do me a favor and do a little research on the subject before popping off about it next time.

Thanks for the management 101 lessons, but I already made it clear that parcells is not great without his old staff. You were calling Parcells a genius. But in your last post you admitted that he is not as good without belly so we obviously agree.. My point along in this thread is that as a person Parcells is very selfish. His history shows that; with the Giants, Pats and jETS.

Savage-He reneged when he told us this would be his "last coaching job". He reneged when he told the writers to "write down", he wasn't coaching again.

He signed a 6 year contract with the Jets. Not all of it was for coaching, I understand.

His exit strategies tend to leave the spotlight more on him, than the situation then he is leaving behind. Let's just say he does not tie everything up in a neat little package for his succesors.

Sav, in life, when you tell people things and how you are going to do things, and in Parcells case when you make boastful and even defiant proclamations, and then you go back on them, well that is reneging. [-X

You are taking seperate subjects and mashing them together. Parcells is a genius for coaching the staff that is no longer with him to become the coaches they are today. RAC and Weis have openly admitted this in the past as well as others. You can't bring a coach up genius football level unless you are one yourself. His current staff has gotten much, much better since he took them over. They are still not up to his previous staffs level but getting there.
