Mike Goodson to Active Roster, Ricky Sapp and Ryan Spadola Cut

BY ALAN SCHECHTER - OCT 5TH, 2013 AT 2:06 PM

PREVIOUS

Just a little bit of roster housekeeping as the Jets prepare for Monday night in Atlanta.

The team has officially placed Mike Goodson on the active roster. For anyone that didn’t realize, Mike is back after serving his suspension for the first four games of the 2013 season. We will see how much he plays, as the team evaluates his “football shape”, but he is officially on the roster. Michael Campbell has been activated from the practice squad as well.

To make room, Ryan Spadola and Ricky Sapp have been released. Sapp is no surprise, as at no point has he ever fulfilled the promise he has shown in the preseason. He shows pass rushing speed in August, but it never manifests during the regular season.

Ryan Spadola was a bit surprising. Though, his production did level off once the season began, and he hasn’t been seeing the field much. People do think that if he goes unclaimed, the Jets will bring him back to the practice squad.

The only question is, why not Clyde Gates? Why is he still here? We can only wonder.

Clyde gates sucks...his best asset is his speed. He reminds me a lot of David clowney...get rid of gates and bring back spadola.

Good question at the end of the article.  Why Spadola over Gates?   Speed is cool and all, but you also have to be a football player

Who wants to bet me that Gates ends up with more career NFL catches than Spadola?  Gates traps a low pass in the rain and is lambasted.  Spadola lets a chest high ball bounce off his forearm and he is the future!

NEW YORK JETS

Jets activate Goodson, cut Spadola

October, 5, 2013

By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

The Jets made four moves Saturday to set their roster before heading to Atlanta for a Monday night game against the Falcons.

Running back Mike Goodson, coming off a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, was added to the 53-man roster -- a confirmation that he will suit up for the game. There was some doubt Friday, when he missed some practice with a tight hamstring.

The Jets also added WR Michael Campbell, previously on the practice squad.

To make room for Campbell and Goodson, the Jets released rookie WR Ryan Spadola and LB Ricky Sapp. The Spadola move came as a surprise. The Jets are taking a calculated risk by putting him on waivers for 24 hours, as they'd like to bring him back if he clears waivers. Spadola, an undrafted free agent from Lehigh, made the team after an impressive preseason.

The Jets are down to four healthy-for-sure receivers -- Jeremy Kerley, Clyde Gates, David Nelson (signed Tuesday) and Campbell. Santonio Holmes (hamstring) hasn't been officially ruled out, but he won't play. The big question surrounds Stephen Hill (concussion), who practice on a limited basis Friday in a red, non-contact jersey, as required by league rules.

The team has yet to release its final injury report.

Spadola was a good story, but as an UDFA he absolutely killed his chances of staying with the team when he dropped that ball in the Pats game.

Yes, it was raining but he hadnt earned the benefit of the doubt. Its sad, but thats the harsh reality of the NFL.

goodson 160Today the New York Jets made some surprising moves. As expected running back Mike Goodson was placed on the active roster now that he is back from a four week suspension. Wide receiver Michael Campbell was activated from the practice squad as well. The move that may have surprised some Jets fans though was the release of linebacker Ricky Sapp and wide receiver Ryan Spadola, both players were waived to make room for the additions.

Linebacker Ricky Sapp, with the Jets since 2011, has had some setbacks with injuries throughout his NFL career. In his time with the Jets Sapp was not able to record a sack but was credited with one tackle. Receiver Ryan Spadola was cut from the team even though he showed promise in camp and the preseason. A New Jersey native Spadola was originally brought in as an undrafted free agent (UDFA) from Lehigh and was impressing the coaches. Unfortunately he was not able to get enough playing time with the Jets in the regular season and the team looked at Campbell as a better option.  Don’t be surprised to see Spadola signed to Jets practice squad if he is not acquired off waivers.

Keep the conversation going in our New York Jets Message Board.

Was about to write this. He must be stinking up the joint in practice and/or doesn't know the plays and/or plays like he doesn't know the plays.

My money is on dropping passes. Or fumbling ones he is catching.
