Should we just extend this logic to every receiving position, genius facepalmer?

Oh, I see, you took it at face value and thought I meant that Geno was better than Kaepernick. My bad.

Hey look, Madison NJ is saying that we should go defense again because we don't have Colin Kaepernick! Yeah you know Kaepernick, the guy that threw for 3,000 yards!

:face:

I get the BAP thing but for this team, at this point, not taking some type of potential, dynamic playmaker at 18 would be a big mistake.

That's one of the things that has me thinking trade-up. Rather than sitting at #18 and potentially reaching, they can move up to where they feel they'd be getting the BAP/offensive playmaker combo.

Or trading back, and getting an extra pick this year, or next year so it's no longer a reach.

Again all this depends on free agency, if the Jets by some miracle sign J Graham, and J Maclin, but lose Cro, Pace, Reed, Landry, and Harris, half the board will be screaming if the Jets reach for a WR/TE at 18 with elite D prospects still on the board.

Obviously this conversation is happening very early. Just thinking that today, the Jets have a serious need for a WR and the firepower to move up some in the draft without hurting their overall build thru the draft philosophy (if that's even a thing).

im going on record today Jan 5 the Jets are not taking a TE at 18. all of these mocks are wrong.

Amero, sorry, i don't even see as a solid first round grade. At best, he's on the cusp like Keller. Assuming he runs wild at Indy, which he probably won't.

Ebron running a 4.65 or whatever at 245 is interesting and he has Eifert like value but he's not super rare. if he was twenty pounds heavier and still ran like that it would be a gronk like mismatch but even gronk didn't go rd 1.

Idzik wants 5 star athletes in rd 1 both milliner and richardson were rare human beings. 4.3 CB and a 4.9 DT. That's rare. if ebron runs a 4.5 maybe he's in that rare zone. I don't know if that's likely.

Also I don't know who exactly they are gonna take but neither of these prospects are Vernon Davis. And they probably aren't Jeremy Shockey either. The Jets need weaponz and all but they aren't going TE in mid 1. Historically that's been an awful pick for this franchise btw.

JMO DB is just as bad if not a worse need than WR. they are probably gonna get a WR in FA i don't know what kind of man to man corner they get to replace Cro in free agency. the weaponz in rd 2 and rd 3 are pretty good too they aren't gonna force the pick. If it's a pass rusher or CB don't freak out everyone.

I have a feeling everybody's going to be disappointed with the direction the Jets go in round 1. Really early to tell since the offseason hasn't happened yet, but my guess would be a pass rusher.

I don't think TE is a valued position by the Jets. Look at the guys Mornhinweg had in Philly (Celek, Chad Lewis) and even the ones in Seattle. No special stretch the seam types. Guys who could block, catch the ball if it was thrown to them, and maybe make plays in the red zone. Plus you know Idzik's aware of the fact that most first round TE's haven't amounted to a whole lot (Eifert, Gresham, Pettigrew, Keller, Olsen, Davis, Lewis - a few solid guys, a good chunk of busts, Davis is the closest to a star in the group and he's not a top 2 TE in the league, those guys went in the second and third).  My guess would be they pass on Amaro and Ebron in the first round. If ASJ is there in the second, maybe they pop him. And if not, something like Richard Rodgers or CJ Fiedorowicz in the third round. Pair whoever they draft with a solid but unspectacular veteran TE, I could see either re-signing Cumberland (who I actually like as a top 2 TE on a team) or maybe a vet like Pettigrew, plus Sudfeld as a #3 with some upside. Safe, not a crazy amount of investment, TE's will be about the same as this year which is fine when it's not a position that's valued that much. Get some competition and a TE of the future but you don't need to rely on the rookie either.

At WR unless the value matches up in the first, I think they do that in the second or third. There are so many good WR's this year, the value's going to be there a little later moreso than it is at 18. Sammy Watkins won't be there, and I'm not sure how well the guys who will be there fit. Take a guy like Odell Beckham Jr., Allen Robinson, Jordan Matthews, Donte Moncrief, Brandin Cooks…there's a lot of guys who will be solid wideouts and offer some upside. Again, sign a vet (Maclin, Sanders, Tate, etc) and you're adding two good wideouts. Vet starts alongside rookie/Nelson/Hill and again it's better than it was this year. Maybe the WR is there at 18, maybe they go up and get Sammy, that'd be great but I think the second or early third round is a lot more realistic. Still an upgrade with the vet and the reasonably high draft pick, and you're going to get good value on the rookie.

The pass defense is still a concern - so a corner could make sense, but I think Cro comes back on a cheaper deal or they bring in a vet to pair with Milliner. Re-sign at least one of the Trufant/Lankster/Walls group, and spend a draft pick or two on corners. If Ha Ha is there in the first I think they pop him, but I don't think they will be. I'd actually guess that Jarius Byrd is the big FA acquisition this year. Dude can cover and create turnovers, which was a big issue this year. Finally gives a legit guy on the back end, and the Jets have plenty of money to burn, plus it hurts a division rival. Antonio Allen was solid at points, I think he/Landry and maybe one of the team's 12 draft picks compete for the other starting spot and the secondary looks a lot better too.

Ultimately unless a QB is there (I don't think one will be) it kind of leaves pass rusher. I could see a guy like Vic Beasley dropping a bit, and I have to watch him some more, but I think he might be the kind of guy they pounce on. The Jets and Seahawks supposedly both really liked Bruce Irvin when Idzik was in Seattle, and Beasley supposedly moves a bit like Irvin. Same general spot in the draft Irvin went and he had a huge season for Clemson. You know Rex got plenty of looks at him. Add him to the third down mix with Barnes after his injury with Pace as a starter again on a one year deal so you're not relying on the rookie, and gradually increase his snaps over the course of the season. It'll drive the fans nuts, but a classic Jets move. Mack or Barr would obviously be better, but conventional wisdom at this point has them both long gone. That big tackle from Auburn would make sense as another dark horse if he slips, but I don't see them going into the draft without signing a starting caliber RT and you can't rotate in a tackle like you can other positions.

I also think De'Anthony Thomas is a really interesting option in the third or fourth after a weak season, but I presume he declares. Return specialist and explosive third down back you know Mornhinweg will use well in the screen game and maybe out of the slot at points. Might be the kind of sexy pick the Jets need and know they need after going boring early, which I'd guess they will.

I could be down with the Jets trading out of #18 to the mid 20's while getting another 3rd round pick, or a second for next year. Of course, if there's a stud staring you in the face, you pull the trigger

1/3 Mock has us taking

#1- Eric Ebron   TE   N.C

#2- Odelle Beckham   WR   LSU

#3- Bishop Sankey  RB   Wash

The 1/1 Mock has us taking

#1 Jace Amaro  TE   Texas Tech

#2-  Davante Adams   WR   Fresno State

#3-  Odelle Beckham  WR  WR  LSU

#4- Ty Zimmerman  S  Kansas State

Thoughts?

I would take Ebron in the 1st and Davante in the 2nd. I'd take S Deone Bucannon out of Washington State in the 3rd.

Even if you don't have Colin Kaepernick?

I honestly could see Geno developing into a Kap type player. I think he has comparable arm strength, better accuracy and touch in his 1st yr. starting, not as good a runner, but good enough. Get Geno a Vernon Davis, Crabtree type players and give him as good an OLine, I think Geno can take that next step.

yeah just give geno two top-10 picks to throw to, one of the best olines in the NFL, and why not throw in a HOF RB while you're at it. only then is it fair to say he stinks.
