Pats' Brandon Spikes late for practice

New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes was placed on season-ending injured reserve partly because he was late for practice last week, league sources told ESPN.

The Patriots placed Spikes on IR on Monday, a surprising move considering the linebacker played all 16 regular-season games despite being hobbled by a knee injury for much of the year.

But Spikes was late for New England's bye week Friday practice, which was the final straw for Patriots coach Bill Belichick, who already had fined him for multiple incidents that the linebacker believed were practically explained, according to league sources.

Spikes took to Twitter on Friday, Jan. 3, to publicly appeal for help when his car apparently was stuck in the snow.

The Patriots and Spikes mutually agreed to the IR designation as opposed to an outright release, which would have made the linebacker available to the remaining playoff teams.

The Patriots host Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts in Saturday night's AFC divisional playoff game.

Spikes, who will be a free agent this offseason, will receive the Patriots' playoff shares this postseason before hitting the open market on March 11.

Spikes, 26, recorded 86 tackles -- the third-highest total on the team -- and one interception this season, his fourth with the Patriots.

I thought teams were specifically prohibited from using IR for this purpose.

Didn't you know that "the rules" apply to everyone BUT the Pats? He's so far above all other coaches, he can't be held accountable to mortal laws....

We sound like disgruntled jealous Jets homers when we say that, but all the evidence points to it being very true. The Patriots are held to a different standard than other teams- a much lower and more favored one.

I hate the Patriots and Bill Belidick, but seriously, Rex can take a page from this when it comes to his own players. If Santonio Holmes played for the Pats and he pulled the crap that he did at the end of the 2011 season, he would have been given his walking papers right after the game, regardless of contract.

But Holmes is a tremendous competitor.

Next time you go to dictionary.com, look up "crackpot".

You said the rules don't apply to him, which is fine - no argument here, but then you equated the "rules of football" with "mortal law"... and deservedly got laughed at.

Mortal law, or mortal sin, harkens to theology. Hence you are saying that by not following the rules of football, he is violating the laws of God. You are, for all intents and purposes, condemning him to hell because he used IR in a way you deem unfair. Which is completely mellodramatic at best and insanely ignorant at worst. Probably some combination of both.

I agree, Belechick again shows that he is running the show, he has rules, and he has discipline.

Rex would have bought the caught in the snow excuse, even if it had been 80 degrees and he still had his titleist hat on.

@ChrisBurke_SI: 7th-round pick Dennard with the INT; Blount, acquired for Jeff Demps and 7th-rounder, scores. There's a reason the Pats keep winning.

UDFA "Snacks Harrison" stars for Jets. Listen every team has a player who defies the odds. LeGarret Blount was "Given" to the Pats because Schiano has an ongoing love affair with Bellicheck who has a love affair with Schiano's  Rutgers players.

Can all these media pricks just stop fawning over Bellichek. He has as many misses as hits. When Antonio Allen gets a pick, I don't hear all this love Jiz

Dennard isn't some great player....

Ha! I got a chuckle out of that one.

It's the media, more than anything, that sets me off. Bellichek doesn't boast. It's the freaking media who fall all over themselves to come up with another way to pee droplets of praise over the "Patriot Way" Heck, Lil Bill had Blount glued to the bench all season, except for periodic goal line duty. It wasn't until he demanded to be released or traded, along with Ridley's fumblitis, did Blount begin to see some work.

I can only hope that Denver beats NE and spare us from all the Brady, Belli praise from Rodney Harrison, McGinnis and all the other ex pats on the networks.

Please, Peyton, play better in the cold and beat BradyPlease!!!.
