CrazyCarl40
@Ken_Rosenthal3m BREAKING: Tanaka to #Yankees, seven years, $155M, opt-out after fourth year. A-Rod fallout. We'll see if he's more Darvish or Igawa or somewhere in the middle like Dice-K. Good signing for the Yankees. They need pitching, still.

Maxman
Report: Yankees, Tanaka agree to deal New York reaches seven-year, $155 million contract with Japanese hurler 01/22/2014 10:00 AM ET By The Associated Press Tweet Facebook Fan Comments Print Email Japanese starter Masahiro Tanaka is headed to the Bronx on a seven-year deal.(AP) NEW YORK (AP) -- Yankees co-chairman Hank Steinbrenner says the team has agreed to a $155 million, seven-year contract with prized Japanese pitcher Masahiro Tanaka. Along with the contract, first reported by Fox, the Yankees must pay a $20 million fee to the Japanese team of the 25-year-old right-hander, the Rakuten Golden Eagles. Tanaka caps an offseason that saw the Yankees add Jacoby Ellsbury,Brian McCann and Carlos Beltran. Steinbrenner said Wednesday that "we had to make sure we had enough pitching to go together with our new lineup." Big league teams had until Friday to reach an agreement with Tanaka, who was 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA last year as the Golden Eagles won the Japan Series title. CrazyCarl40
The Yankees got better this offseason. They needed to. They're going to obliterate the Luxury tax again though. Steve Berthiaume@BertDbacks34m #Yankees have spent half a BILLION dollars this winter & still have Kelly Johnson likely starting at 3B & Brian Roberts at 2B. JetsFanInDenver
Yuck! 22 mill for a Japanese pitcher everyone will figure out by May! How many Japanese pitchers have Hall of Fame careers in the MLB ? And then we wonder why the Yanks do not win the World Series with all that money. A high risk move. Ticket prices don't go down when they are under the luxury tax so I am okay with it. And people here have said that ARod will win his federal case. So maybe he can start at 3B. CrazyCarl40
Chris Jones@MySecondEmpire7h I think Tanaka's a huge gamble for the Yankees. He threw 772 pitches in a single tournament: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9452014/pitcher-tomohiro-anraku-future-japanese-baseball-espn-magazine … He's also throw over 1300 professional innings. I hope the Yankees at least got the dude to take a physical. Seems like a huge risk.

T0mShane
Andruw Jones was on with Kay. Jones played with Tanaka last year. Said he's ok, not overpowering, but works hard and is crafty. Said he'd be a nice third starter next season. Good luck.

PFSIKH
Carl's funny. Not really. CC: Was last year just a bad year or will this begin the inevitable end of career slide. Tanaka: No one knows what you are going to get. I do not think he rated as highly as Darvish coming out of Japan. Darvish was solid his first year, but had some struggles. Kuroda: Similar to CC, will the Kuroda you saw the first 1.5 years of his Yankee career return? Or the second half one? He is about to be 39. Nova: Should be solid for the Yankees for years to come. Pineda: I know he got some minor league starts in last year, but he is still two years removed from pitching in the majors. As cautious as the Yankees have been with all young pitchers, I doubt they throw him into the rotation with the expectations of 30+ starts and 200 innings. With the Yankee improvements, there is no reason to not expect at least 12+ wins from the top 4 and likely more as long as they are healthy. However, as Nova showed his first few seasons with the Yankees, you can win a lot of games and be average. The Yankees do have questions this year, but depending on how the 2, 4 and 5 starters progress, their future looks better in 2015 and beyond. Yes, Unfortunately the Yankees are the only team with question marks in their starting rotation. No reason to be snarky...it is a thread about the Yankees. CrazyCarl40
Yes, Unfortunately the Yankees are the only team with question marks in their starting rotation. I didn't say anything to the contrary of that. I would just think with all of the money the Yankees spent this offseason, they'd have less questions marks in the rotation and the majority of their infield.
