Sure. But that's what separates these shows from BB, Deadwood, Wire. Just degree of difficulty stuff, not execution.

I don't know. Fargo and True Detective are the only ones to go to these extremes. Both are using such newer formats that I'm not sure how to judge either yet. I think Fargo's format is maybe a little more accessible because it's essentially a shared universe, but True Detective counters that with its concern for juxtaposing local sociopolitical analyses. Granted, it is barely two seasons in, but that is not easy and so far that aspect has been pulled off in spades.

I think Farrel is a better actor, feel like McConaughey over did it.

The scene that is a flashback, when Vaughn's character slides to photo of the guy that raped his wife to him across the bar, as he approaches it, the profile shot, wherein he looks like his gag reflex is going off... that scene was perfect.

That said, I think McConaughey was incredible. Not sure I agree he's been outdone, at least not after 1 episode.

That's poor storytelling if you ask me and that was my problem with season one and why I wouldn't put this show up there with The Wire, Breaking Bad, ect. I'll still watch for the performances, Pizzolatto does allow his actors to act. I'll also keep watching for the beautiful shots, which were the highlight of Sundays episode.

No. That's poor expectations.

I dunno. At some point the excess exposition together with one-off seasons is kind of a cheat.

Meh. I agree with RJF on this. Not spoon feeding all the information up front to quell the curiosity of the viewer is not the same as poor storytelling.

The change was always going to be difficult for some to accept. Especially when season one provided such instantly appealing characters, but I'm liking the build up so far. Stylistically it's very different and I had to re-watch a few scenes to really figure out exactly what was happening, far more sub plots and significant characters to develop, whereas by the first episode last season we got a good idea of two main characters and were pretty much immediately introduced to the mysterious element of the crime.

Farrell can be hit and miss but this character has so much potential and he ******* killed it in that first episode. The scene with his kid was heartbreaking, followed by the epically brutal confrontation with the bully's dad.

I like Vaughn and think he's underrated. Already liking the arrangements between his character and Ray. Think that's going to be the highlight of the season.

The other two major characters were okay but didn't really really stand out for me in that episode, will give it time to see how they develop with the main plots.

The opening theme was probably the biggest disappointment after last season. Bit OTT in terms of being slow/eerie and seemed out of place. The soundtrack last season was epic and it probably will be again, but that opening was strange.

So I rewatched episode 1. Farrell's kid isn't wearing Lebrons in the opening scene.

I did the same thing.

I know we have not seen Farrell's ex, but when I saw his kid the second time, I thought Vaughn's henchmen was the dad.

Same. He's just as capable doing whatever he ends up doing this season on True Detective as D'Onofrio was playing Kingpin for Daredevil. I thought his scenes were the best of the first episode.

Continuity is overrated in its own right. There's like 3 shows in history where it didn't get played out. And even GoT is starting to get there.

only cause most shows over stay thier welcome ... binge watching has given me a new appreciation for continuity and charcter evolution

Interesting themes emerging for the characters...

Daddy issues:

  • Farrell's character has obvious father-son problems with the kid that isn't his, but in tonight's episode his ex-wife says something to him about "not knowing any other way", I took this to imply he had an abusive father.
  • McAdam's obviously has issues with her father, established in ep.1
  • Kitsch's character hasn't had any specific details revealed about father, but I'm betting that surfaces in some way related to that moment in ep.1 when he told his girl that the burn scars are from before the Army
  • Vaughn's character revealed being locked in the basement by his alcoholic father as a child, in tonight's opening scene

Sexual issues:

  • Farrell's character revealed to Vaugn in ep.1 that he has "no interest in that sort of thing" after Vaughn's suggestion that he find a woman
  • Kitsch has intimacy problems, can't get aroused for his girl, and tonight revealed some homophobic / homo-curious scenes
  • McAdam's shocked her man in the bedroom, her sister told her she has "problems" with sex, and tonight there were some things implied about her being a child in her father's commune, and then we see her looking at girly s&m porn
  • Vaugnn's character is a little less about sex, but still, I think with him their taking it the route of not being able to conceive naturally, so in his case not an "issue" but still in the same vein

Self-destructive behavior:

  • Farrell, McAdams, Kitsch are all boozers
  • Farrell is clearly a hot mess, just about everything he does is self-destructive
  • Kitsch is flirting with suicide after being with his girl in ep.1
  • McAdam's hasn't shown anything beyond drinking, but in tonight's episode she talks about the other kids that were in the commune with her and says that a couple of them had killed themselves, which I would bet is the writer's way of implying that her experiences were similar and therefore she may have similar tendencies
  • Vaughn's character hasn't revealed this yet

The themes are sort of like the social commentary on men packed into season 1. I loved how subtle it was in season 1, whereas in this season it is much more up-front. Very curious to see how they pay all this development off.

I think the way tonight's episode ended was ballsy as hell for the writers... a lot of shows have fallen into the pattern of doing stuff like that in the last 2 episodes only. I was going to talk about how I like the slow build... but then BOOM.

Hahahhaa... right? ******* awesome. (Even if he was far and away doing the best acting of the group.)

haven't been that floored since Travolta got smoked halfway through Pulp Fiction…I'm assuming we'll still see a lot of Farrell in flashback scenes no?…I think Vaughns character is a bigger piece of garbage than we even realize right now also.

Oh yea, Vaughn's character is absolutely the cliche "mobster gone legit". It'll be interesting to see if they do flashbacks, they haven't so far - right? Farrell might just be done-zo...
