BroadwayJoe12
Was hoping for that 4th, but still think we're gonna end up with the 5th, 6th and two 7ths as mentioned. Outside of the 5th, if they could turn one of those picks into a decent player like Antonio Allen I'd be happy, other than that, I tend not to expect too much out of 7th round selections. Still good for specials and depth though, something that was drastically devalued in the Tanny era.

Those seventh round comp picks are nice for drafting those priority UDFAs that you think you won't be able to sign after the draft. Cmartin
One of items on the agenda this week at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando, Fla., is the awarding of compensatory draft picks to teams that lost free agents during the previous offseason. Any compensatory picks will be granted in addition to a team's regular rotation of selections in the draft's seven rounds. As things now stand, the Jets have eight picks in May's draft: One of their own for all seven rounds, starting with the No. 18 selection in the first round, plus an additional fourth-round pick obtained from the Bucs for last year's trade of some cornerback who's now with the Patriots. The league does not make the formula for determining compensatory picks public, so there's a lot of murkiness surrounding how they're divvied up. There are, however, a few basic rules to keep in mind: • The maximum number of compensatory picks any team can get is four. • Compensatory picks cannot be traded. • Compensatory picks are added at the end of rounds three through seven. They are not taken from other teams. • Playing time and salary are believed to be the biggest factors in the compensatory-pick formula. While it's not certain, the Jets last spring seemed pretty confident they would get as many as four compensatory picks, which would bring their total draft haul for this May to 12 selections: Basically, the Jets' free-agent gains last year of linebacker Antwan Barnes and running back Mike Goodson, plus their losses of defensive end Mike DeVito (Chiefs), safety Yeremiah Bell (Cardinals), tight end Dustin Keller (Dolphins), safety LaRon Landry (Colts), guard Matt Slauson (Bears), and running back Shonn Greene (Titans) all seem to have some impact on how many compensatory picks they stand to get. But, again, the formula is tough to pin down because of salary and playing-time considerations, so it's possible the Jets could get less than four additional choices based on whether any of the above players qualify for the compensatory-pick pool. I recommend you read The Jets Blog's excellent detailed explanation of how it all works, with an updated rundown here. While taking care to note their forecast is not air-tight, The Jets Blog projected the Jets getting one compensatory pick at the end of the fourth round, another at the end of the fifth round, and two at the end of the seventh round. We'll all know for sure soon enough.

faba
NFL Announces 32 Compensatory Draft Choices to 13 Clubs A total of 32 compensatory choices in the 2014 NFL Draft have been awarded to 13 teams, the NFL announced today. Under the rules for compensatory draft selections, a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four. The 32 compensatory choices announced today will supplement the 224 choices in the seven rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft (May 8-10), which will kick off in primetime for the fifth consecutive year. The first round will be held on Thursday, May 8 and begin at 8:00 PM ET. The second and third rounds are set for Friday, May 9 at 7:00 PM ET followed by rounds 4-7 on Saturday, May 10 at 12:00 PM ET. This year, the compensatory picks will be positioned within the third through seventh rounds based on the value of the compensatory free agents lost. Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. The NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement limits the number of compensatory picks to the number of clubs then in the league (32). This year, three clubs – Chicago, Atlanta and Cincinnati – qualified for compensatory picks under the net loss formula but will not receive those picks because they ranked 33rd, 34th and 35th, respectively, among all compensatory picks. Atlanta and Cincinnati will receive picks for other compensatory free agents lost who ranked within the top 32 compensatory picks. A fourth club, Oakland, did not suffer a net loss of compensatory free agents last year but qualified for a compensatory pick because the compensatory free agents lost by the club were ranked higher than the ones they signed (by a specified points differential based upon salary and playing time). Because such picks are awarded after all compensatory picks at the end of the seventh round have been made, Oakland’s pick effectively ranked 36th among all compensatory picks, so the club will not receive a selection. I'm letting it settle in. That's 6 picks in the first four rounds, potentially 7 if we can swing a trade back. Greenseed4
I've heard they're looking for WR help. Maybe someone they like is at 18 I'm guessing they would have their pick of the litter of WRs not named Watkins or Evans. They might also get giddy about the 2nd best CB prospect ( one of Gilbert or Dennard should be there) or S (I think one of Clinton-Dix or Pryor will be there). It would help if we make a move on Desean Jackson being as we need the WR help more than anyone else in the league, but even if we don't the flurry of guys available at the 1-2 fringe are legit. (Moncrief, Adams, Matthews, Allen, Cooks, OBJ) and extra picks can go a long way at improving this roster, especially if it's the "lifeline" of our roster. THOP
Interesting bit of information looking at the history of comp picks. List of the last 10 Superbowl champs along with where they rank in total comp picks from the last 20 years. Seattle 14th Baltimore 1st NY Giants 10th Green Bay 3rd New Orleans 29th Pittsburg 7th NY Giants 10th Indianapolis 13th Pittsburg 7th New England 8th That averages out to about 10th place. So if Idzik keeps doing what he is doing the odds are in our favor to win. Isn't it strange the lengths Jets fans will go to find the silver lining.
