ATLANTA (CBSNewYork/AP) — The Yankees on Sunday traded for pitcher Brandon McCarthy and designated Alfonso Soriano for assignment.

The Bronx Bombers bolstered their rotation by acquiring McCarthy, a right-hander, from Arizona in exchange for left-hander Vidal Nuno. The Yankees will also pay the $1 million assignment bonus owed to McCarthy as part of the deal, CBSSports.com reported.

The move comes after Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia had a setback with a degenerative cartilage problem in his right knee. New York was unable to work out a tradeicon1.png for the Cubs’ Jeff Samardzija, who instead was dealt to Oakland.

McCarthy, who turns 31 on Monday, was 3-10 with a 5.01 ERA with Arizona this season. In nine seasons with the White Sox, Rangers, A’s and Diamondbacks, McCarthy is 45-60 with a 4.21 ERA.

McCarthy, informed of the trade before Sunday’s game against the Braves, plans to meet the Yankees in Cleveland.

Meanwhile, manager Joe Girardi announced that Soriano has been designated for assignment. The team now has 10 days to trade, release or waive the 38-year-old outfielder.

Soriano is batting .221 with six home runs this season. He started his big league careericon1.png with the Yankees, playing in New York from 1999-03. He was reacquired in a trade last season with the Cubs.

One of many moves to come before the July 31st trade deadline, imho. They could use a player or two in all facets of the game. Looks like they started to address their pitching first.

It ended quickly for Soriano. I was hoping he had another year or two left; I always liked him.

Yeah he was always a favorite of mine too, he was toast this year however. Wasn't playing well to get at bats with Beltran holding down the DH spot and Ichiro playing well enough, which ultimately led to Sorianos designation.

It is a mixed bags with older vets, but the Yankees have the market cornered on the old vet...so it was only a matter of time before one of them got cut.

Fun fact about Soriano.  Entering this season, there were only two players in MLB who hit 20+ homeruns for 12 straight seasons.  David Ortiz.....and Alfonso Soriano.

Ahh I gotcha, honestly this division is up for grabs so who knows, I'm just happy to see the Yanks are at least trying to improve via trade, because god knows we need it.

I disagree.

The Sox are not going to compete for anything this year except a top 10 pick.

I understand letting Salty and Jacoby go for differing reasons.  They have a few prospects and signing Salty to a longish contract makes no sense.  Jacoby added so much to the offense, but his cost would limit the Sox.

However, they did not hing to even close fill Jacoby's shoes.   Sizemore was worth a chance, but they needed a guy that could be an everyday player in case JBJ was not ready.  His D is by far, but in over 100 career games he is barely hitting over the Mendoza line.

Then to make matters worse, they brought in Drew.   He was not needed. They have plenty of 2B/SS/3B between Portland, Boston and Pawtucket.  No lets bring in another guy that has no future with the team in a position that is actually producing.

As many good things that Cherington and the team did last year, this is the law of averages catching up.

Yeah the Drew signing baffled me a bit, and it seems that ever since they signed him Xander has been struggling mightily. I think the Sox put too much of their 2014 success in the hands of young guys like Xander, Bradley JR, Middlebrooks, etc.

Out of curiosity, ( because I haven't spoken to any sox fans about it) do you like your chances of re-signing Lester? What would you consider too much for him that you wouldn't have a problem with him walking away? For example, I was fine with Robbie Cano leaving because 10 years at 240 million for a 30+ year old 2nd basemen seemed foolish to me.

The yankees piss away 100 million at minimum every year on guys who suck/spend 70% of the season on the DL and they get cheap with their 30 year old Hall of Fame 2B who was FAR AND AWAY the best hitter in a mediocre lineup. And for some moronic reason they are getting fans to DEFEND that move? Really?

Not exactly a good sign of the future, but Xander had raised his average to .300 before the signing.

As far as Lester goes, I have a similar feeling.  I love the guy, but if he is seeking a 5+ year contract for a guy that is 30 and will be 31 entering next year, no thanks.  Trade him for a bat.
