Training camp updates day one

Not too surprising either. Kid actually has a lot of talent, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him continue to struggle until the end of the preseason. Missing all of that rookie camp is a pretty big deal when it comes to learning the playbook.

I'll be a little disappointed if he doesn't get up to speed quickly. IIRC, Evans was supposed to be the most NFL ready of the WRs the Jets took in the draft. With Ford looking good, too, he could be in a real fight for a roster spot.

Some notes from today's Post:

- WR Eric Decker looked tremendous in his first practice. He caught nearly everything thrown his way and showed remarkable route running. Decker may prove that he can survive without Peyton Manning.

- WR Stephen Hill was on the field opposite Decker when the first team took the field. He had one pass sail through his hands in drills, but overall had a good day. … Rookie WR Quincy Enunwa left practice with a hip injury. … Rookie WR Shaq Evans had a rough day with several drops.

- RB Chris Ivory sat out team drills. Ryan said he has a “little bit” of a hamstring injury. … G Willie Colon and OLB Antwan Barnes, both on the PUP list, sat out.

- Oday Aboushi lined up at right guard and Brian Winters at left, flipping sides from the end of spring practice.

- Rookie TE Jace Amaro saw a lot of time with the first team. Jeff Cumberland was excused for personal reasons and did not practice. He was expected to report later Thursday.

- The second team offensive line consisted of: C Dalton Freeman, RG Will Campbell, LG Dakota Dozier, LT Ben Ijalana, RT Brent Qvale.

- Rookie WR Jalen Saunders, listed at 5-foot-9, delivered a big hit on CB Ellis Lankster during 7-on-7 drills. His reputation is he plays bigger than he is and it looked like it. Saunders messed up on one play, leading to Vick’s interception. He stopped running his route and Vick was picked off by S Jaiquawn Jarrett.

- Rookie CB Dexter McDougle saw some time with the first team defense. He also intercepted QB Tajh Boyd at the end of practice. … OLBs Garrett McIntyre and Jermaine Cunningham both had the unofficial “sacks.” … CB Dee Milliner made a nice breakup on a deep pass from Smith to WR Saalim Hakim.

That's nice, but isn't Lankster barely 5'9" himself?  It's not like he leveled Wilkerson.

3) How will the cornerbacks fare? Dexter McDougle had a tough first day of camp on Thursday, getting beat quite a bit. The Jets have raved about him, so it will be interesting to see how he fares in the next couple of days. In addition, Eric Decker had a good day: a good test of the secondary will be if they can make plays on Decker, since they’re going to have to go against receivers of his caliber in the regular season.

Let's slow down a little, not put him in the HOF just yet

Five things to look for on Day 2 of training camp

Day 1 of training camp gave us some insight into the 2014 Jets -- Chris Johnson looks spry, Geno Smith did indeed get a little over 75% of the first-team reps -- but there are still plenty of questions that need to be answered. Here are five situations worth looking out for on Day 2:

1) It will be Jason Babin’s first practice (presumably). We’ll be watching to see how quickly the Jets push him into the defense. Will he play with the first-team on passing downs? At 34, Babin is likely to only be a situational pass rusher.

2) Chris Ivory’s hamstring. This was a story all through training camp a year ago, and the Jets surely will want to avoid that again. Ryan wasn’t very descriptive, saying it was a “little bit” of a hamstring issue, so it’s a situation worth monitoring.

4) Can any of the rookie wide receivers stand out? Michael Vick’s interception Thursday was, according to Rex Ryan, essentially the fault of Jalen Saunders. Shaq Evans had a number of drops Thursday. The Jets would love to get production from at least one of their three wide receiver draft picks.

5) Another note on Saunders: he was back as a kick returner on Thursday. If he can prove capable returning kicks, it could make Jacoby Ford expendable. Otherwise, Ford may be able to lock down a roster spot just for his returning abilities alone.

This is a concern until proven otherwise

Not sure what you're expecting.  Is there an NFL team out there that has a 2nd team line that gives you confidence?

Besides, even if they're terrible, this might just be the line Vick plays behind in preseason.  *Praying for injury*

Chris Johnson

Here is what you should take away from the first day of training camp.

Injury Update

When the players made their way onto the field and began warm ups both Kerley and Hill started their day on the stationary bikes, as I mentioned on the JetNation twitter account yesterday.

Although they began camp on the bikes, they did participate in every drill throughout practice and seemed healthy. Willie Colon and Antwan Barnes sat out the first day, as everyone expected; They have been placed on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list. Chris Ivory sat out of team drills with a pulled hamstring, which coincidentally happened last year as well. Rex Ryan didn’t seem too worried about Ivory though. Rookie Quincy Enunwa hurt his hip early in practice, and didn’t participate for the rest of the day. Nick Bellore also injured his hip early in practice, but ended up participating again towards the end of the day.

Offense

Everyone has been saying how the Jets offense is “light years” ahead of last year’s offense, and I can attest to that having seen it in person. Both Eric Decker and Chris Johnson looked great. Decker didn’t drop anything thrown in his direction, and ran very crisp and clean routes.

Chris Johnson was also very impressive, he was speedy, and elusive. Johnson was even flexed out at the wide receiver position for a couple of plays to show off his speed. The only negative for Johnson was one fumble, this should be expected though as he hadn’t seen the field most of the spring and summer, and still needs to knock off the rust. The rest of the offense looked clean as well. Both Geno and Vick started camp in great fashion, but it was Geno who ended camp on a high note. Since I was busy trying to get other information up on twitter, and had to do some moving around I wasn’t able to get the exact stats. Brian Costello had the numbers for both Geno and Vick though:

Obviously with more reps Geno is going to have more opportunities to put up better numbers. David Nelson, who also looked great day 1, stated how much Geno has improved and how he’s “acting like a starter,” by saying “I see that when he’s in the huddle, I see that whenever he’s calling plays. I see the way he has ownership and command over the offense.” Out of the rest of the wide receiver group, the two wideouts who separated themselves were Kerley, and Nelson. Both rookies, Jalen Saunders and Shaq Evans, had drops at some point but Saunders looked much better overall. Keep an eye on Jacoby Ford who impressed on his first day at camp.

Defense

It will be very interesting to see who gets the nod for the starting spot opposite Calvin Pryor in week 1 of the regular season. Rex was using a rotation of Pryor, Allen, and Landry with the starting unit. All three of the safeties looked pretty good on their first day of practice, Landry almost had an interception on a overthrown pass by Geno.

Whoever ends up losing the starting job will most likely still see a good amount of time on the field. Jaiquawn Jarrett had an interception off a pass that was tipped, he will have to push for playing time with more plays like that one. The secondary wasn’t as sharp as the offense, giving up more than a few big pass plays. Dexter McDougle had an interception on the last play to close out the day.

Notes

The Jets newest player, Jason Babin wasn’t at camp on the first day because he hadn’t signed his contract in time to make it. Oday Aboushi was at right guard for Willie Colon, and Brian Winters was at left guard while it was the other way around in minicamp. Jeff Cumberland wasn’t at camp for personal reasons. Willie Colon could be cleared for camp within the next few days, while Antwan Barnes will be out for a more significant period of time.

Rex Ryan had the team fired up with his annual speech before training camp began, rookie Tajh Boyd said of Ryan’s speech: “You could just feel the fire burning inside the guys. He made me want to run through a brick wall.” Football is back, and you can be sure there will be many more exciting stories coming out of training camp.
