HBO's The Leftovers

Is anybody else TRYING to watch this show? I have to admit, I was VERY excited about the show after hearing that it would be made into an HBO series. My childhood friend Tommy Perrotta wrote it and is involved with it being made into an HBO series. Tom lived on Locust Avenue, right down the street from us in Garwood, NJ, and was a good friend of mine. I actually tried teaching him how to be a QB, and he and my little sister Phylis had a childhood romance growing up. I really like Tommy and am proud of the success he has enjoyed as an author and film writer, Election, with Matthew Broderick and Little Children were two of his movies.

The Leftovers is his newest project and I'll tell ya, I'm having a hard time with it, anyone else a little confused with The Leftovers?

I'm watching it. I like the story's premise, and imagine it was a very interesting book. It's depressing, though, with no release. The guy who did Lost is doing it, which also concerns me. Your friend never explained why the people went missing, but the guy who completely screwed the ending of Lost (and dragged the show on way too long) plans on explaining it. Why?

HBO is pretty patient with its programming, but so far I really can't imagine this one lasting more than a couple seasons if the action doesn't start to pick up. Right now it just feels like an hour of meaningless despair every week. Albert Camus would've loved it.

Yeah, HBO has not been lighting them up recently, both this new show and True Blood have just been bad. Heck, even Boardwalk Empire had some rough patches last season for a while. Thrones is all they really have, Veep is funny but its a short unmemorable comedy. True Detective started kinda slow but overall was great, but it will be completely different next season so who knows. Showtime is eating their lunch with Ray Donovan, Homeland, Californication (just had their series finale), Masters of Sex, House of Lies, Penny Dreadful, and Shameless -- the best of them all.

I do not get it.  I tried three episodes and it made no sense.

I saw it was a book and I am thinking of getting it.  I think it is likely a Stephen King thing where TV cannot do it justice.

I would love to get into another series but haven't really found one I like over the past couple years.....all time favorite was sopranos...entourage was great.....love boardwalk empire, sadly this is the last season....homeland was awesome (is there any more seasons??).....just started ray donavon which is pretty damn good.....thought true detective was good but it dragged a little too much for me.

any other strong recommendations??

Binge watched it this weekend. I have no idea what the hell it's supposed to be about, and I can't stop watching. The episode with the preacher and the casino was really great.

I also find it very interesting that the main focus of the show is a family that didn't lose anyone on the 14th.

I wonder if it really is driving towards anything. I think the goal of the show may very well be to stay esoteric. This past episode for example, I have no idea where it fits into the grand scheme of things, and I'm happy we got to learn a little bit more about Wayne, but the last ten minutes were so fantastic. Honestly had me choking up when she was crying and asking if she'd forget her family. For now, I'm enjoying the mystery and the little bits of hope that people find along the way.

Game of Thrones, True Detective, and now The Leftovers. HBO writing is second to none, and that's including movies.

Ray Donavan is the best show since The Sopranos and Deadwood, The Brotherhood was also a pretty good SHO series

Caught a little bit of Ray Donovan before we switched cable providers. It's awesome, but I wouldn't say the best since... there's a lot of damn good series in the mix for that distinction, IMO.

True Detectives IS a great show, next year they will be using two new big names Elisabeth Moss may be one of the two female leads for next season. She was in this other show last year that we were watching Top Of The Lake which was also very good. You're right RJF, there are a lot of contenders for the best next show

"The Knick" about a NYC hospital in 1900 is so far based on one show pretty good. Clive Owen stars and carries the show as the brilliant top surgeon who happens to be a stone junkie. The Contrast of the crisp white doctors' outfits contrasted with blood in the "operating theatre" is dramatic.

"Ray Donovan" is okay. You really can't go wrong with Jon Voight chewing scenery. Shame they killed off James Woods. The wife's "Southie' accent is really annoying though.
