GREENBEAN
And Taj Boyd goes wild!!!!!! The NFL Competition Committee discussed expanding practice squads from eight to 10 players back in March. The owners tabled the idea back then, but the measure has now passed. The NFL announced Tuesday that change will go into place for only the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Absent a further agreement, the league will go back to an eight-player practice squad in 2016. This is essentially a two-year trial to see how the league likes the new rule. We can't imagine anyone having a problem with the adjustment. It gives 64 more NFL players jobs during the 2014 season and provides greater roster flexibility for teams to develop young talent. There is almost no downside to this rule. Without a true developmental league, teams struggle to work with young talent that isn't ready to truly compete at the pro level. A bigger practice squad could help teams teach diamonds in the rough.
pointman
Boyd is really terrible. Would we really even send that turd to the practice squad?
Bleedin Green
Yeah, I certainly think this is a smart move, and more than anything will be a nice help to those young final cut fringe guys. Should also help to reduce the need for teams to be juggling different players around on the practice squad as much as they have in recent years. If there's the potential talent out there to fill these extra spots, then why not? The Jets seem to have a lot of guys on the bubble this year, especially at WR and LB, so I'm sure they'll be happy about this.
Bleedin Green
Boyd is really terrible. Would we really even send that turd to the practice squad? He'll probably get at least a year there just on general principle. After all, he was a draft pick. Barring them coming across another team's cut they really like, I'm guessing he's probably going to be around through at least next year's camp. Of course there's a separate question of whether he really deserves it, and how many other guys they'll be bringing in at the position.
Villain The Foe
Boyd is really terrible. Would we really even send that turd to the practice squad? It would certainly be a waste of a spot.
slats
Boyd is really terrible. Would we really even send that turd to the practice squad? I still think the Jets only carry two QBs, with a third on the practice squad. If not Boyd, then someone else's cut. If they do that, Boyd has the advantage of spending the last few months learning the Jets offense. I don't know how much weight that will carry, though, if another prospect they also liked comes free. Even Rex doesn't sound positive about Boyd(!), and he's probably his only real advocate. SouthernJet
Boyd is really terrible. Would we really even send that turd to the practice squad? we may take a flyer on another younger qb cut from a team w/better qb's
JetsFanInDenver
This is great news for a the entire league specially the JETS who made a ton of lower round picks and now have an option for keeping 2 more players. At the same time JETS can now potentially put the #3 QB on the PS as both Simms and Boyd qualify for the PS. So it will be interesting to see who it will be. I haven't seen Boyd do anything to deserve a place in the NFL on any team. Rex also mentioned that the JETS will possible carry 4 RB's. That means WR's will most likely be limited to 6. It time for Gates/Ford/Enunwa and company to shape up.
Larz
just saw someone write that this is a first step to an 18 game schedule
JetsFanInDenver
The first step was the increased stress on player safety and all changes made under that guise.
