By the beginning of the regular season, that number must be cut almost in half, to 53. Here are a look at several key dates, as the Jets get their final roster ready for the Sept. 7 season opener against the Raiders: Aug. 26 (Tuesday), 4 p.m.: Active rosters must be cut to 75 players. For the Jets, this likely will mean cutting 13 players, rather than 15. Rookies Shaq Evans and Dexter McDougle, who have been placed on season-ending injured reserve, will no longer count toward the active roster as of Tuesday. So even though they are still on the team, they will essentially count toward the 15 players who are being removed from the roster on Tuesday. But the other unlucky 13 will be looking for work. Aug. 30 (next Saturday), 6 p.m.: Active rosters must be cut to 53 players. This is how many players teams can carry during the season. On game days, teams can have a maximum of 46 active players. So, just over exactly half of the Jets' current 90 players on the active roster will suit up for games during the regular season. Aug. 31 (next Sunday), noon: Teams can begin establishing their practice squads. The NFL on Tuesday announced that practice squads would be expandedfrom eight players to 10 for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Practice squads will go back to eight players in 2016, unless the owners agree to keep the number at 10.
