Sports radio

Please tell me what has happened to sports radio out of NY.  I was pretty excited to get back to the states and be able to hop in my car and tune in during my drive to and from work, but it's unbearable.  The Philly sports guys are far superior out here.  The morning drive has some funny/original stuff to listen to, and FAN has Boomer & Carton.  Now, I'm brand new to those two so I figured it would just take me a little time to get used to them, but they are horrible.  How bad is it when a Jets fan can't stand listening to a show hosted by a former Jet and a fellow Jet fan?  When I listen to Carton I feel like somebody took "mad dog", made him 25 years younger, and turned him in to a Jets fan.  Francessa is horrible as usual and I'm just glad to have Mike Missenelli (sp) in the afternoons here.  One of the best I've ever listened to.  How does this happen though? How do they have enough of a following to stay on the air?

Boomer and Carton is the worst possible show I've ever heard. Joe and Evan is boring as ****, and Mike has been in semi-retirement since Dog left. WFAN should have given mornings to Dan Patrick.

Of all those mentioned, Joe and Evan are the ones I find most tolearable...maybe just the best of a bad bunch.  If you get the chance, I really recommend Missanelli...good sports guy and pretty bright too (he's a lawyer) and was apparently fired from his gig in Philly a few years ago for punching his program manager but now he's back.  Knows his stuff, makes callers elaborate and doesn't berate people when they disagree.

Haven't heard him yet, but I've heard he's pretty bad.  I always liked him when he wrote for the DN though.  Ran in to him once at a Yankee game and he was  a  nice enough dude.

Funny you say that.  I too live in Philly and used to love listening to Mike and the Mag Dog.  However, I can't tolerate the Jets coverage by the NY radio personalities.  I don't feel like I ever get an objective account of what's happening with the Jets.  There's always some nonsense.

Mike Missanelli is excellent and 97.5 here in Philly is a solid listen all day.  They're passionate but call it fair.  I wish there was a place to get the same on the NYJ.

Agreed 100%.  Driving home the other day I was actually thinking about how jealous I am about how football crazy they are out here.  I'm DYING to hear Jets talk and Francessa is blathering on about golf and I think horse racing at one point.  Turn on Mike Miss and it's all screaming lunatics that can't get enough football talk.  I wish there was a NY equivalent to what they have in Philly.

Rothenberg on ESPN isn't awful. Actually is football centric unlike most of the hosts and unlike ESPN shows, doesn't seem too scripted.

At least With WFAN there's less of the big brother aspect. Francesa just does what he wants which is basically not allowed anymore because fear of suspension.

Truth is...Mike and the Mad Dog (early years especially) were the gold standard.  Their dynamic was excellent.  Mike was dialed in to the NFL and gave a crap about the Jets.  Chris was the perfect compliment.  Mike's show on Sundays was fantastic.  Their football Fridays was great.

Now...Mike is just nasty to the Jets.  And everyone else is just schtick.

Sports Radio in general sucks.

I signed up for ATT Uverse and when they guy was here in TN, he was pimping the sports package and glossed over the NE package which includes COMCASTNE, WEEI, Yes and another NY (Mets) channel.

Listening to nonsensical Felger and Mazz or borderline racist Dennis and Callhan is slowly giving me an aneurysm.

I find Don Lagreca tolerable because he still is a fan and doens't pretend otherwise. Which makes Kay almsot okay.

I have known Brandon Tienry since he was born, so I cannot say I'm objective. At a loss why FAN would put Carton on the air over him or a decent guy like Jofy McDonald. Think Esisason, hack that he might be, would be way more informative with a guy who didn't think he was a comedian.

Carton can be somewhat tolerable in doses...but his schtick wannabe Howard act has gotten so old. He's the only guy besides Richard Neer where I actually have to change the dial. Between the Waldman impression for the 9,000th time or just the random animal noises...enough. When him and Boomer are actually talking football..it can be pretty good. But the show constantly gets interrupted by Carton.

Tierney is pretty good...can be somewhat dull...but he doesnt read from a script which is nice-its actually his opinion and you can tell. I know the suits want it...but the good cop bad cop dynamic is so friggin transparent.

I think current sports media in general is bad. It is boring, often dumb, filled with clichés and they repeat the same dull "insights" and storylines over and over again. I wish we had a true alternative to the likes of ESPN, and WFAN, that would actually be authentic and original.

Boomer & Carton are okay, but Carton can drive you crazy if you listen too much.

Joe & Evan are held back by the fact that they have too many boring interviews, I don't know about the rest of you, but I don't care to hear from certain players on weekly basis when they say nothing interesting and repeat the same tired lines.

I've stopped listening to Francesa since his feud with the Jets in 09-10

and on ESPN, Mike and Mike just talk about generic topics often not related to NY, I can't stand Colin Cowherd, I don't understand how Mike Lupica has even a one hour show, Stephen A. and Ryan Ruocco are tolerable but they often just seem to rehash stale ESPN storylines to kill time.

The only show I actually like is Dan Le Batard's radio show, which tries to be the opposite of what I described above; they don't take themselves seriously, they have fun, and it is actually entertaining, I wish we had a show like that in NY.

MIssanelli(?) has subbed here, I think, on ESPN radio. I have heard him. Joe never has a logical thought. He is all impulse. Evan is a little smart but he thinks he is a lot smart. So that kind of makes him a smart aleck. But I listen to them sometimes. I never listen to morning and afternoon drive on FAN, and Michael Kay makes me want to puke. Who is dumber: Joe or Don La Greca?
