WR Jacoby Ford Among Moves as Team Reaches Roster Limit Ahead of Tuesday Deadline

The Jets today released six players to reach the NFL's 75-player roster limit.

On the list are WR Jacoby Ford, the unrestricted free agency signee from Oakland in March, and former New England second-round choice CB Ras-I Dowling.

After the announcement of seven releases Saturday night, the Jets have gotten down to the league's first roster limit ahead of the deadline of Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. The next deadline is the final cutdown to 53 players by Saturday.

Today's releases:

WR — Jacoby Ford, Michael Campbell

Ford was selected by Oakland out of Clemson with a fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft. For his three playing seasons (he sat out 2012 with a foot injury), he played in 38 games with 13 starts and caught 57 passes for 848 yards (14.9 yards/catch) and three touchdowns. He also returned 75 kickoffs for the Raiders for a 25.0-yard average and four TDs. In this year's three preseason games he had three receptions for 19 yards and three kickoff returns for a 23.0-yard average.

Campbell is a second-year man who was participating in his third Jets training camp. He first arrived as an undrafted free agent out of Temple in July 2011 and played in four games last season. He also made a stop with the Rams for their 2012 camp. This summer he played in all three games and had two receptions for 28 yards.

TE — Colin Anderson

Anderson was signed by Minnesota as an undrafted free agent last year. He was a final cut by the Vikings, was worked out by the Jets in October, and signed a reserve/future deal Dec. 31. He didn't play in any of the three preseason games.

FB — Chad Young

Young was added as an unrestricted free agent out of San Diego State after the May draft. He played 48 snaps in the preseason games and had one reception for 8 yards.

DE — Anthony Grady

Grady was an undrafted free agent out of Missouri State signed by the Jets after the May draft. He got in for 11 plays in the first two preseason games but didn't play vs. the Giants.

CB — Ras-I Dowling

Dowling was New England's second-round pick in 2011 and played in nine games for the Patriots before being a last cut in 2013. The Jets signed him to their practice squad last October and to a reserve/future deal Jan. 6. He got in six special teams snaps in the first two preseason games and didn't play vs. the Giants.

mild surprise with ford.  could this mean they think saunders will be ready ?

without ford and saunders, the kick return game is sh*t

Clyde Gates could handle KO fine and Kerley is at least sure handed for PR duties. not the most dynamic situation out there, but certianly not the worst.

That being said, I also hope this is a good sign for Saunders.

I'm surprised by Jacoby Ford. I wonder what happened there.  He didn't show all that much in the preseason, but also don't think there was all that much opportunity to.

KR specialist is not a thing anymore. He's not much of a receiver and he also wasn't really taking reps for the PR job until Saunders got hurt. I'm not really surprised. Guys like Hakim and Salas who are doing all they can to stand out should be the guys making the team anyways.

I also think Dowling could have gotten more of a shot with all the injuries here. Can he really suck so bad as to be cut from this CB desperate team?  Just crazy

gotta think he isn't PS eligible.  the kid dixon is a hot mess, but will be stashed on PS I have to assume

They probably cut Dowling in order to pick up some other CB that is better. But, other CBs cut that are decent might not be till the last cuts. With Allen now hurt with a concussion they either have to pick up another CB or feel they can get by with Walls, Lankster, and Patterson, until Milliner comes back. Then when Allen is ready to come back he will be a swingman between S/CB since Pryor is going to start, unless Landry loses his job to Allen.

This.

We don't need a roster spot for someone to catch touchbacks. I'm hoping this means Salas has cemented a roster spot.

The NY Jets announced that they have released 6 more players today. Last night the Jets released 7 players. The biggest names that were waived today are WR Jacoby Ford and CB Ras-I Dowling. If the Jets waived Ford, it is assumed that Jalen Saunders will be back on the field soon.  Here is the press release from the Jets.

Based on playing time and targeting just in the last pre-season game it was obvious Ford was not much in favor.  At the same time the emergence of guys like Saleem Haakim made it difficult to keep him.

This really bodes well for Salas/Gates/Hakeem trio for the last two spots assuming JETS are trying to sheperd Saunders and Enunwa to the IR and PS respectively.

Clyde Gates!? After watching him  on kickoffs last year, I remember most of the board praying for touchbacks. Short memory.

And their prayers were answered. That's my point.  I don't remember any mistakes by him or any drops. Maybe I'm wrong and my memory is short (it wouldn't be the first time I've been accused of that) But my whole point was that we have guys who can at least be relied on to catch the ball.
