@AdamSchefter: Seahawks released former Giants CB Terrell Thomas, per league source.

Thoughts?

Only red flag is his injury history... Which seems to be a problem for us. He has had surgery on his ACL 3 times, and didn't play 2011 or 2012. If he can stay healthy it'd be a good pick up. I'd say at this point though Idzik should make the call, and bring him in. If he can even return to half or 3/4 of his old form it'd be worth it. He had 10 Ints 2009-2010.

The positive thing is that his getting cut from Seattle means Idzik can likely get direct info regarding his release.

I always viewed INTs as a false positive for good CB play.  The best of them never get thrown at and have few opportunities to get picks.  If you're picking off a lot of passes it's likely because you're either getting targeted more or are gambling more due to poor position.  some guys like Deion Sanders would leave separation on purpose to bait QB's, but there aren't many with those skills.

He also had 34 PDs 2009-2010

Yeah, it's a little curious since they signed him less than a month ago...

Rotoworld says they like their depth.  It could be that he's injury prone, or sucks, or that they simply want to load up at a different position for their 53.  Either way, I'm sure Idzik can get a straight answer so we don't waste our time for naught.

Do want to even think twice about any of these slugs.  It's the next rounds of cuts where we may be able to luck into some quality players.

SOme of them are being cut so that they have an extra week to catch on with another team. Some of JETS and Pats cuts sure could find a home and paycheck this season. I am pretty sure some teams would give Jacoby Ford a look in.

Yeah, in Revis's best season he was also one of the most-targeted CBs in the league. Now granted, it's because he was shadowing everyone's #1 WR, but his INT total (6) was only very good rather than amazing like the rest of his season.

Some guys get a lot of picks because of a lot of opportunities, but there are a whole lot of bad CBs out there every year who get thrown at plenty and don't pick off a lot of passes.  There were only 5 CBs in the league who picked off 5 passes last year (# of picks Terrell Thomas had in '09 and '10). Richard Sherman led the NFL with 8. He doesn't suck and doesn't have the speed to leave separation on purpose.

Sometimes it happens (e.g. Ty Law picking off 10 passes for us in '05) and sometimes it doesn't. But there's no unwritten rule that one can point to that suggests CBs with high INTs usually aren't good.

Yeah I agree, there's no absolute in this.  Like I said, Deion Sanders, a guy like Revis...they are just rare specimens.  I see a guy like Darrin Walls fitting the latter part of your statement.  He gets targeted a lot, and often is in position to make an INT, but just can't catch the damned thing.  I guess that's why D-backs don't play WR.  Except for Sanders.  Anyway a guy with few INT's can still be an excellent corner, while one with lots of picks can be an all-or-nothing type player.  That's why I tend to view a guy with a ton of picks as not necessarily a huge positive.

Well now would be the time to add him and cut Hill (or whichever WR) or Patterson if they know they're going to do that on Saturday anyway.  They're not going to learn anything about Hill/other WR between now & then. But they will be able to get a 3-day look at this kid before they have to cut another 22 more. After that, we'd have to cut someone who made the final cutdown. Not to say that doesn't happen during the season anyway, but between now & Saturday no one presently on the team is going to suddenly "wow" them by showing something they haven't seen already over this summer.

But I'd think they want a good reason to cut Patterson. It's unlikely they're going to find that reason on their current roster of 75, otherwise I think they'd have cut, rather than suspended, Patterson.

They gotta' bring somebody in and give them a look in this last pre-season game, especially so they can dump Patterson if need be.

I think that's at least part of the reason they're suspending him, so they get a last look at everyone else - including a new potential pickup - without giving Patterson playing time over others, and answering questions as to what signal that sends, or whatever distracting questions that Ryan/others don't need. Just keep him away for the next few days.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking.  Keep him around and see if anyone steps up, but if they bring in one or two more guys it increases the chances of him being let go.  I know Terrell Thomas doesn't "fit what they do" but as Max pointed out yesterday, young corners who can't cover don't fit either.  At least Thomas is a vet who has been productive.  Kick the tires.  Honestly, at this point there isn't a single CB on the market that they shouldn't be putting under a microscope.

It's tough because the number of extra roster spots just dropped by 15, and corner isn't the only position they're looking at. Plus they need bodies at other positions to play in this final game so starters (and many 2nd-teamers), whose roster spots are assured, don't get injured in the most meaningless of meaningless games. So while it's easy to say, "OK cut all the extra WRs, RBs, DEs [etc.] that we know are getting cut so we can look at 5 more corners" it's not as simple as that with a game coming up where you're not dressing 30+ guys.

Yeah, i get that.  I was surprised some when I saw some of the D-lineman that stuck, but then realized if they dump them, that means regulars have to play more snaps in pre-season game #4 which nobody wants.  They're in a tough spot, they really gotta' look at some guys.  To be honest though, it looks more and more like they're gonna' stand pat before kickoff tomorrow.  Surprised to say the least.
