saving up that money to keep our good guys around next year as well as bring in some key free agents. Many people are Pissed about it, but they'll get over it once the season ends and they realize that spending the 20 million now wouldn't have won us the SB, but it could certainly set us up to do so next year.

By the way, we're winning the superbowl this year.

No way the Jets win the Super Bowl in Mariota's rookie season.

Financial flexibility is never a bad thing. I assume the Jets don't think they're Super Bowl contenders this year, and we know Idzik gave Rex his little one year extension.

If the team has success this season, they can spend next year to attempt to make a push behind a third year quarterback on the rise and build around a reasonably talented young roster. And if not, they can spend to retool the roster and fit whatever schemes the new coach brings in.

Idzik arrives on the scene as the new GM.  Says he'll focus on building the team through the draft first and foremost and spending only when it makes sense to do so (much the same way the Seattle Seahawks were built).  He does exactly what he says he's going to do.  Jets fans outraged.

It works if over the next few years the Jets are able to both resign their own free agents AND outbid other teams for others. I think the jury is out until we see the quality of guys Idzik brings in.

I think the problem has been his drafts and pick ups. Not so much the strategy itself.

Your car has two bent rims, and the tires are flat. Better not do anything about it.

I think the problem has been his drafts and pick ups. Not so much the strategy itself.

Drafts can't be evaluated properly for at least 2, usually 3 years.  And his first draft yielded the DPOY.  His pickups have had mixed results, but I'd say some of his "bargain shopping" people are critical about has actually gotten some decent players here.

Just look at Chris Ivory.  He was a steal here for a 4th rounder.  4.6 ypc behind a questionable line.  Not to mention he was 4th in the NFL last year in missed tackles per attempt and 2nd in the NFL behind Andre Ellington in Yards after Contact on runs to the outside.

David Nelson has been quite productive for the bare minimum we got him for.  So was Kellen Winslow for the year we had him.  And until Antwan Barnes went down he was probably our best overall pass rusher.

And of course, his first big signing was Eric Decker.  Our biggest need was a true WR1 and he got one, at a reasonable price no less.  People are shoving that aside saying "Well that was the obvious move."  Not really.  There was a lot of debate over which WR we should go after and whether a guy like Decker would even be available to us; the Colts and Packers had cap space too.

You can easily laugh at players like Ivory, Winslow, Nelson and Barnes, but if a GM can make shrewd pickups on the cheap to fill roster gaps, and if one is willing to be patient and see how his drafts shape up, it's hard to argue at this point that he is doing a poor job.  These are tactics that smart GM's utilize to make a bad team a contender; focus on the draft and spend carefully.

So we're going to have our franchise qb and all world cb making 1.2 million dollars combined in a year  we're right up against the cap and paying a Zach Miller 11 million dollars? I love this plan.

Cap space rollover. It's not use it or lose it type of salary cap anymore.

That is a horrible example.   Ivory is backup running back who can't catch and has injury issues.   The Jets don't don't sign  CJ if Ivory were a good RB.     Nelson is ok,  but he's a 3rd or 4th receiver.  He had about 35 receptions last season, And he hasn't looked good this preseason.  Winslow was ok, nothing special, only started 3 games, played in 12, and was gone after the season.  31 Receptions isn't some great pickup.

Barnes?  The guy played one month and has been injured ever since.  Yeah you can't account for a guy missing due to injuries, but saying how great he is because he played 4 games and has been out ever since, means what?

You can't really say Idzik is doing a great job because he signed guys like Barnes, Nelson, Winslow, and Ivory.    One of those guys isn't even on the team anymore and didn't really do much last season  Another guy played in only a couple of games and has been injured and out since.  The RB had 850 yards rushing and can't catch a pass. He's a nice backup RB, he's not a guy who is going to get you to the playoffs.  And the Receiver is a guy who most teams can find. He's not a guy that will change your season or team around.

It's still early, but many of Idzik's draft picks from last season need to show they are good this season.  Guys like Milliner, Smith, Ivory(traded for a 4th rounder), Winters, etc need to show they can be good, otherwise that entire "build through the draft" is pointless if most of those guys still stink as bad as they did for most of last season.
