Spartan Races bitches!!!

My buddy asked me to do one. It's in 8 weeks or so.

I'm fat, out of shape and haven't regularly exercised since before I got my wife preggers, which is going on 2 years now. I moved us twice, we got married, somewhere in that I messed up my back bad, and then lost a year of sleep when the baby finally arrived. I gained almost 30 pounds with my metabolism getting messed up and my eating decisions being driven by exhaustion.

Feel free to tee off on me now, but in between, please provide some insight around how to train for one of these things and whether 8 weeks is enough for a fattie with a bad back to train.

Best of luck and kudos for deciding to get back in shape. The hardest part is always the first couple weeks, getting started.

Best advice I can give is to just take things very, very slow. Use the first two weeks to stretch a ton and get used to accessing those muscle groups and fibers again. You are most vulnerable to injuries after periods of inactivity, especially with high intensity workouts like what is needed for these races. Especially into your 30s and 40s. Do not get ahead of yourself and set the ego aside. Stretch, stretch, stretch. And make sure you warm up and cool down after every single session. Increase your water to about a gallon a day, and most importantly, have fun. While I don't do these races (lifelong gym rat) I have some friends that do and I think they are great. Whatever helps people to get in shape is a good thing.

Good luck.

Joking aside, were you asking how many people in the race total? or on my team? I don't know the answer to either. I'm not doing it to win though, I'm doing it to send a message to myself.

"Get off your ass Daddy, you've got a lot of playing to do!"

Thanks. I dropped the ego a long time ago. I do a ton of work around my house, and my landscape project this summer has really gotten me off my ass. I've been hauling 100+ lb bags of refuse every weekend, shoveling 5 yards of stone into place, etc. I work until I can't lift my arms.

Now I just want to add some structure to it, make it less about finishing a project, and give myself a goal.

I'd some high intensity interval training with a beginner strength training program while eating at a deficit. In 8 weeks you'll be able to drop 10-12 lbs and put on a miniscule amount of muscle and bring up your cardio with the hiit.

Will do.

I plan to go back to the nutritarian way of eating, it's something CTM turned me onto. I dropped a ton of weight. Less beer, less beer belly, and I would imagine all of this becomes easier.

I would not call him a buddy.  :)

While Arsis' suggestions will get you in the right direction, you really needed to be training for a lot longer than 8 weeks.

Check your local TV listings.  Spartan Race has a show which follows the world tour.  This race is no joke.  The best competitors in the circuit take an hour to complete.
