Moving forward (things we need to see thread)

1. Give Jalen Saunders all of the snaps you were giving David Nelson. It appears as if David Nelson just doesn't like football all that much, and Saunders needs to justify his draft selection. If Saunders is supposed to be one of those guys that can take a 5-yard pass and turn it into a 20-yard RAC play, then they need to give him the chance to do it.

2. Give Calvin Pace's snaps to Trevor Reilly and IK Enkempali. Pace has been a nice player, but the defense looks desperately unathletic. It's time to see if the kids can get pressure off the edge, because neither Pace nor Coples can do it consistently.

3. Stop pretending that Cumberland is a TE and let him line up wide. Every play where his hand is in the dirt is a wasted play for him.

4. Get Salas 15 snaps per game.

5. Stop ******* around with Chris Johnson as a power back and let him run on tosses and draws. Give Ivory the hump work inside.

6. Let Coples play DE and DT exclusively. It's almost depressing watching him try that one rip move over and over on the outside.

7. Let Salas return punts.

I'd replace Nelson with Salas rather than Saunders, although I would like to see them try to get Saunders some offensive snaps.

Reilly and IK's time will come. Maybe sooner rather than later. But I'm sure they're currently inactive every game because right now they're just not ready for prime time. Rex's defense is complex, and takes a little while to learn.

CJ should be the Jets #3 RB at this time. Don't force feed him just because you paid him.

Stop all the wildcat BS, and keep Vick off the field until Geno gets hurt or he's mentally destroyed from all the turnovers.

I need to see Geno quit the 3-4 bonheaded plays each game. He clearly has a much better feel for the playbook and game, which shows in his 63% completion percentage as well as averaging 50 yards more per contest, but he just needs to knock off those plays: first int, deep sacks etc. The tough thing is, I understand him trying to force some things as the game moves on; there's been times he's given 4+ seconds of a clean pocket - when winters isn't being blown up - and no one can get open when Decker is gone. It's almost laughable trying to watching Nelson and Cumberland try to beat man-coverage.  I'd still rather him dirt it or bench it if nothing is there.  The one positive is that despite his mental lapses, he's been able to consistently move the team between the 20s and has had us in the red-zone to tie or win the last two games, that's impressed me.

The play-calling has to stop being cute. I understand we have zero red-zone targets and Marty needs to scheme something, but there's no reason Ivory shouldn't have been fed when we were 3rd - 2 and he was eating up their defense all the 2nd half.  Ivory needs mor touches, as does Powell.

Decker apparently didn't re-aggrivate his injury, just felt it tight and smartly took himself out so as to not do further damage.  Hopefully he's available for Sunday, but I'd rather him be available for the up-coming stretch of games against our AFC opponents.  As sh*tty as the last two losses are, they are NFC games and the division is still up for grabs with how weak the entire AFC East looks from top to bottom.

I don't get the Pace hate.  Yeah he is unathletic, but the D has been decent.  The problem is in the backfield not the front 7.  Reilly and Babin have been taking snaps and watching Adams blow a coverage at CB is exactly why you will not see IK or Reilly take all of Pace's snaps.  The same way Davis didn't deserve all of Scott's snaps in 2012.  I agree on the WR front.  It is a very bad sign that they pulled Saunders from punt returns.  I was hoping they would just act like it was because it was tipped, but he is probably snake bit now.

Refreshing to see constructive thoughts from Tom, lol.

I think if I have to be honest with myself, even as an optimist and a big homer, this team is simply bad.  They don't do any one thing particularly well, which to me is the mark of a bad team.  Any time you're left saying to yourself "well, if they could just cut out that boneheaded play there, that mistake over there, that penalty miscue there, that turnover there...", that's the mark of a bad team.

To me the most depressing part of last night's game was the seeming regression of Geno.  One game, one game, I know.  But I think I had built my hopes up a bit far beyond they deserved to be.  The guy's passes were off the mark all night long--consistently behind receivers.  He also looked more rattled under pressure than he did in weeks 1 and 2, and seemed to have no ability to get out of the pocket and make a play with his feet (seemed like he could never break the tackle box).  Without Decker our WR corps stunk a whole hell of a lot like 2013, which was a putrid stank.  And like many here have said, ENOUGH OF CHRIS JOHNSON PLEASE.

1) I'll echo the "stop with the cute play calling"...

2) more Ivory, less CJ

3) is rather hav last night DBs lineup than one w Milliner.

4) if Geno can't start making better decisions during big moments, he needs to go. If he does, I'd rather see...

5) Matt Simms..haha. No joke. I'd rather see him than Vick. Just saying.

That's all they need to do is tell him to stop the mistakes, and he will. Easy button.

The problem is, Andrew Luck isn't waiting around for Idzik to call him up. Or "the next Andrew Luck," whoever that is.

Remember when people said no one could be worse than Pennington? And then Sanchez was actually much worse than Pennington.

There's a very real chance that the next QB of the Jets will be worse than Geno. Fact is, Geno is one of the few above average parts of this team right now.

I don't know that Sanchez was worse than Pennington and that last statement is just ludicrous.

taken all the way, no player should ever be replaced. geno smith is pretty awful. he needs to improve dramatically to get to bottom quartile of acceptable. i'd agree with your statement if we were talking about andy dalton, but geno is bottom of the barrell.

QBs throw, receivers catch. Give Aaron Rodgers this dumpster fire of an offense and see how he does with it. I do agree quarterbacking can be improved upon but this isn't a situation where the roster is great and talented and the QB isn't getting enough out of them.

This is a situation where they are the cheapest roster in all of football and if you were a fan of another team, there's like four guys you might want playing for your team. And two of them are linemen.

you mean like tom brady had last year? brady's numbers were off i will grant you: only 4,343 yrds, 60% completion, 25 tds, 11 ints, 87.3 QBR. in other words, a record setting season for a jets QB.

We need to trade for a decent CB and desperately need a #1 WR might as well address the pass rush as well Coples and Babin non factors last night.

giving away two wins to GB and CHI basically makes it pointless to swing a mid-season trade. might as well let it crumble at this point.

The red zone offense obviously has been discussed ad nauseum.   Specifically within 5 yards, if you're going to throw the ball, then use Geno's and the offenses STRENGTH'S.  Yes I know they are few but running the ball with Ivory is one and if you do want to throw than WHY aren't they using a BOOT??? If I have to see this offense sitting in the gun one more time within the 5 yard line I'm going to lose my s*** on Mourniweg.

Geno's problems are turnovers and consistency. Very real problems. But calling for Michael Vick to replace a QB with those problems is absurd. In his last two seasons -a total of 17 games- he threw 13 interceptions and fumbled 15 times. Geno has currently hit on over 63% of his passes. Michael Vick has never had a season where he completed 63% of his passes.

If they stick with Geno and he pans out, they found a QB. If he doesn't, they dip back into the QB market next year. The Jets aren't winning the Super Bowl with Vick. And even if he plays well above his career numbers this season, the Jets are still looking for a QB next year. They only way they aren't is if Geno proves himself. They are, rightly, going to let him prove himself one way or the other this season.

yes but i think it would be good for geno to be benched for a game. and good for the jets to see how he responds. can learn a lot about how someone handles adversity by sitting them when warranted. remember rex got a lot of flak for babying sanchez along. give geno a breather next game. we aren't beating megatron anyway.

The way the Jets lost last night, it's really not Megratron that I'm concerned about. The Jets need to stop beating themselves.

I'd rather see how Geno responds from a performance in which he literally threw the game away than see how he performs in two weeks after a benching. If there's any chance that he's going to be the long term solution (and I think there is), that's easily the more important thing to learn about him.

i think that's the issue--i don't think there is any chance he is the long term solution--which basically means we disagree on everything else. not saying that's a problem, just saying most everything derives from how you feel about whether geno has a shot or not.

He has a much better chance of being the long term solution than Vick does, that's for sure. And the front office and coaching staff are invested in him for at least this season. They need to see how he bounces back on a short week from a game he almost single-handedly lost himself.

Actually a great post. Agree with all except for probably 7. I'd keep running Saunders out there.
