Dallas - Rebuilding On The Fly

Off the wall, and not entirely Jets related, but everybody thought Dallas was in deep grease with their OL and DL issues going into the season.  Now, it's how 'bout those Cowboys!

It does not need to be a multi year rebuilding process.

exactly get a coach in here sign hoyer and draft a WR in the first and we will be on our way..........oh and we still have lots of cap even if we gave hoyer a nice deal.

Hoyer is not the guy I'd want to throw FA money at, especially in a down year on the QB FA market and in the draft. You'd have I overpay handsomely.

The Cowboys have spent the past few seasons drafting OL in the first round and the guys turned out to be decent players.

The Jets drafted crap for the most part and the OL they did draft aren't very good.  Plus they have a QB who can throw 30 TDs in a season.  Yeah he seems to choke, as do the Cowboys, but the Cowboys lost games last year because the defense stunk, not the offense.  I mean they lost a game after the offense put up like 45 points.

So who thought the Cowboys offense was no good?   Nobody.  It was the defense that sucked.

That OL was built over a number of years. They assembled talent at offensive positions, had a ton of patience with Dez Bryant - remember, he had a very sketchy history off the field - and more importantly, didn't put a ton of responsibility on their QB. This is not a quick fix by any means.

Yes, they suck on defense...they lost Ware, Sean Lee, etc. but a productive offense offsets any defensive issues. They control the ball for long periods of time and this makes it easier for their defense to go all out in short bursts.

This is why Rex's strategy of getting good (but low impact) defensive players with early rd picks makes no sense. A defense isn't going to win you games, they can keep you in games for a while but to actually win games you need TO SCORE SOME ******* POINTS. Get an offense that can score 24-27 a game before you draft calvin pryor and wilkerson.

They've been rebuilding their OL and defense for the last 3 years

I don't think you're rebuking if you have Romo, Murray, Bryant and Witten.

More like retooling.

Agreed.  But the Jets have talent, albeit at different positions.  Cowboys drafted well, and filled the gaps (not with top flight guys coming out of college) that the Jets could not.  Re-tooling or rebuilding on the fly is doable with the right management.  Say what you want, but Jerry has got him some glory hole.

Rexs way of doing things is ancient. The 2000 Ravens won with defense and anybody at QB. 14 years ago.

The NFL has changed. Romeo Crennel says that you cannot stay in zone coverage like days of old because todays QBs are too accurate and will pick you apart. What you say about a potent offense masking a mediocre defense is spot on.  The most complete team is probably Seattle. Every other team has some sort of flaw including NE, but the teams with offenses seem to be playoff bound.

Jerry knows a glory hole when he sees one.

all true.

Rex is a great defensive coordinator but inadequate as a coach.

and for all the talk about seattle as a great defensive team, their offense is pretty decent. Phenomenal young QB supported by a strong OL and a running back in the prime of his career. They also had a decent WR group; a guy like Golden Tate is better than his numbers suggest. They could control clock and knew how to score points.
