Foot or Back injuries?

Hi All,

I fell 12' last week and just got home from the hospital yesterday.   Ended up with 13 screws in my foot and a compression fracture on my L3.

Have any of you had recent foot injuries or lumbar compression fractures?  Kinda wondering what this will end up long term.   The Neuro guy says my back will be just fine -- if I wear a brace for 3mo. I hope he's correct but I don't know many people who have done it.

My foot Dr says I might not want to run again, but i'm old and fat so maybe it's no big deal.  Just wondering if any of you have been banged up in similar ways and how it went.

Damn.  That sucks.  I have not had too much back trouble (knock wood) but I've recently had foot troubles.  Apparently I had a long ago lis franc fracture.  It didn't bother me much, but when I hit around 35 I developed a lump that could be painful.  It got very bad when I was in Italy because they have some VERY hard turf fields and cutting became ultra painful.  I was basically told it is probably arthritic and to tie my shoes to keep pressure off.  You'll want to keep your weight down because being a fat guy can be rough on your feet.  Hopefully yours heals up nice.  I didn't even know that I ever broke mine, but when the guy described it, I realized that it had happened in a car accident when I was 15 and I just kept right on going like nothing happened.

Good luck

I had a left foot injury about 5 years back. For the foot injury if you are allowed to wear a boot I would suggest keeping it in motion and putting some weight on it from time to time if you are not already doing it OR atleast discussing the possibility of it with your ortho.

My ortho did not allow me to put any weight on it and when i went off the crutch finally I ended up needing a ton of  recovery exercise to get back to shape. My left calf muscles were a solid lump from not being used in the way they are meant to. It was tough to get back. Even today after almost five years i still feel my left half is somewhat tighter than my right.

So if possible put some weight on it and try to walk around even if its with the help of a crutch. But before doing that run by your ortho. Good luck.

Thanks.  My foot guy says no weight on it for 3 months due to the amount of hardware.  They're gonna do one more surg in 3 weeks to deal with a tiny piece they couldn't address earlier.  I'm going to stay off it for that amount of time, but will definitely work to get the calf back when all is done.  I'm not really fat, just large-ish...6'4 216.  If I can walk without a lot of pain, I'm good.
