Could Rex Stay On As Defensive Coordinator?

We all know the reason that he still has a job for the past two years is because of the affection that the owner has for this coach and it is my personal belief that the "other" reason is that Johnson didn't want to be the only Jets representative up there on the stage after the last big front office purge. Everyone was canned except for Bradway and Ryan. This year is different, there is no possible way or any reason that can be given to keep Rex Ryan on as the head coach going forward. My question for the board is this; has it ever been done before, a HC being demoted by the same team and gone down to a coordinators position after being the head coach?

could the pope become atheist?

Can I keep my ex-wife on as a nanny?

lol  Thanks for the morning chuckles.

Why are folks so enamored with Rex?  Under his "leadership", our team has sucked.  Bigtime.  Enough!

Our defense scares nobody but sh*t teams.  And even then we have choked plenty against teams we should have destroyed because weave up TDs or big plays.  Rex' defensive scheme is mostly hype by now.  Just what happened to Daddy Buddy and Twinny Rob.

don't misunderstand the question here guys. I'm not saying that that is what I HOPE will happen, because my personal opinion is that there should be 3 guys fired in January;

1A: Rex Ryan

1B: John Idiotz

1C: Terry Bradway

it's only too bad that the REAL culprit that needs to go can never be fired unless he drunkenly breaks into the Bronx Zoo and screws a baby orangutan otherwise, well we're stuck with the idiot. Woody Johnson would be #1AAA

Really think Rex should go the Div.1 college route. His shtick would be great for 18-22 years old kids.Would probably be a great recruiter with his personality. He could start all over, really learn to coach and run a program, and 3-4 years down the road would probably get another shot in the NFL.

No way this can happen.  Rex is popular with the players and this will just serve to undermine the new coach when he makes unpopular decisions.

I'm not so sure about just how popular Rex is these days even among his "vaunted defense" of high draft picks. Wilkerson said something to the effect that the Jets weren't focused or well enough prepared, which seems to be an indictment on Teflon Rex's coaches and/or his own coaching

I agree. I think he'd be outstanding at the college level, at least with the kids. Not sure how good he'd be at alumni shmoozing, though. Still, if I was giving him advice, I'd suggest a top job in the college ranks as opposed to another DC job in the NFL.

It really can't happen anywhere, which is why I don't think anyone can come up with an example where is has, but it's especially true with a coach as well-liked by the players as Rex. I don't think Rex would consider such a move, either.

As for the original question, I don't know if Rex's contract allows the team to keep him on at a lesser position once they relieve him of his head coaching duties. I doubt it does, I think that would be a very unusual clause. However, if Woody can force Rex to stay on as a DC, I probably wouldn't put it past him. May as well have dysfunction on as many levels as possible.

If he wasn't still popular with the players, there's no way that, at 1-8, they manage to beat the Steelers. Just no way. If they were done with Rex, they'd've already packed it in this year. We'll see what happens now that they've avoided a new franchise record losing streak, but personal pride and their affinity for Rex helped them to do that.

There's just no place for a defensive genius in the go-go aughts.

especially not for one who hasn't figured out how to stop a team from scoring inside of the 2 minute warning on 88% of the halftimes in a season. Did anybody else happen to notice that the times that the Jets don't defer they actually have a chance to not play from behind?

Should never happen. The demoting of the HC to a DC would create divided loyalties at a time where the new HC needs to have everyone's attention. Rex has got to go and Idzik as well. Housecleaning time.

Terrible decision to keep Rex on when they hired Idzik...they should have let him select a new HC.

Let's be clear about this...The Jets didn't play particularly well in this game...The Steelers were just horrendous.  For once all season ALL the bounces went the Jets way but it's like the team all of a sudden became explosive.

It's more about film for these guys...They are professionals and every play of every game is on film and will ultimately determine their next contract.  They play hard for their personal success and not the coach at this point.  That play for a coach thing, on a 1-8 team, is way over-rated.

You must've missed the Kotite years. No one was playing for their next contract or personal success on that team. Or even under Groh or Mangini, who they quit on completely by design.

This is a bad football team, but they played well against the Steelers - especially early, coming out of the locker room knowing full well that a new record losing streak was on the line, and having enough pride not to want to be a part of that. As the game wore on, the lack of talent became more apparent, but they showed up to win. Not many 1-8 football teams do.

Ok so they won a meaningless game. Understood, this is not a Kotite type team. However, the win probably hurts our opportunity to get a better draft slot. The team needs an infusion of talent and the draft is the best way to get that talent. Its over. Rex should not come back and Idzik should not either. This season has been a complete clusterf*ck.

That guy in the NY Post is advocating a return of rex if they win at least 3 more games. What a joke...why the F would you do that? I guess the press is realizing that the Jets w/o Rex are not that interesting from a quote perspective...

Rex would be better off taking an analyst job for one of the networks.

Alot more money and alot less hours.

I for one, think Rex would be outstanding on TV.

I don't disagree with any of that, and I'm in no way, shape, or form advocating for Rex to return under any circumstances (although, I do reserve the right to laugh quite a bit of it happens).

But this whole winning meaningless games down the stretch thing is the sort of thing that happens when the GM and the coach aren't on the same page. Both Rex and Idzik are looking to save their respective jobs. Rex isn't saving his job, but he's auditioning for his next one. He needs to keep the team playing hard and winning a few to make a case for himself somewhere else. And as mentioned by Mehta the other day, Rex winning games might also save Idzik's job. If the GM and the coach were tied together, and their jobs were safe, maybe they could tank the season. People can complain about how the Jets are screwing up their draft position, but the coach and GM have no choice but try to win every game they can down the stretch. It's not just Rex, either, that's why Idzik trades for Harvin in the middle of a lost season. He knows his job is genuinely on the line, too.

Yeah, he would be better off doing anything BUT coaching at the NFL level for at least 1 year.  College or TV are his best options.  But he's an NFL junkie so he'll either take the best DC job he can get or a HC job with the Jaguars or Raiders.

He would be. I could see him doing that for a year, collecting the rest of his money from the Jets while keeping his profile up at the same time, but I think he's still too young and too competitive to give up coaching for a full time TV job now.
