Report: Michael Vick the choice to start if he’s healthy

After the Jets were crushed by the Bills in Detroit on Monday night, Rex Ryan said he didn’t know whether Michael Vick or Geno Smith would be the team’s starting quarterback against the Dolphins in Week 13.

A pair of reports from Jets beat writers point to Vick being the choice. Both Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News and Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com report that Vick will be Ryan’s choice if his calf is OK after injuring it on Monday. Vick did not think the injury was serious after the game.

Mehta adds the caveat that Vick will be the choice if he’s healthy and if Ryan is the one making the call about the starting quarterback. That suggests that General Manager John Idzik and/or others in the organization might want to see Smith play out the string in hopes of seeing something that Smith didn’t show in 24 consecutive starts over the last two seasons.

That might be an unlikely outcome, but so is meaningful improvement from the offense with either player at quarterback.

Think I've done all the evaluating on Smith I need. Not that Vick's any better, hell throw Simms out there

Simms would probably be my pick…odds are he sucks, but throw him out there for the rest of the season and see what he has just to be sure.

Geno I could live with since he's under contract for the next few years anyway and likely isn't going to be cut, but Vick just makes no sense whatsoever. It's Rex trying to squeeze out an extra win or 2, which will only serve to hurt our draft position. This is why he should've been fired over the bye week. What's good for Rex is bad for the team, and vice-versa.

Honestly I don't know how much Rex has to say about it. At his presser last night when they asked him about it, he just got all awkward, and mumbled we'll see. Think he had to ask Daddy John

Absolutely disgusting and inexcusable. Rex desperately trying to salvage his rep and win games, while we should be evaluating the kids.

That's not on Rex. Why should he evaluate the kids for next season? That's on Idzik who should fire Ryan for being bad at his job and have an interim coach who can play the kids to evaluate them.
