In Retrospect: Could Eric Mangini have taken the Jets to the AFC Championship and beyond?

We all like to speculate so here is one. What if Mangini never got fired. Could he had done what Ryan did which was lead the Jets to back to back championships? Many would say Ryan rode all of Mangini's draft picks and that is what got him so far. Have you changed your mind knowing where we are? Or do you think only Ryan's defensive schemes got us within a game of the Super Bowl? What were Mangini's biggest wins vs Ryan's?

One can only wonder whether or not things would have been different.

No

Mangini, according to just about everybody involved with the Jets didn't make draft picks.

Please God haven't there been enough revisionist history threads glorifying the false greatness of Robot Its a process?

Eric Mangini was 5-16 over his last two years as a head coach without a healthy Brett Favre. He's bottom three all-time as a Jets head coach, and that's only because we've also gotten to enjoy Lou Holtz and Rich Kotite here. Guy was absolutely terrible, and his grocery shopping continues to be grossly overrated, too.

Short answer, no f'ing way.

Whoa...so we're only taking into account a coach's last two seasons when evaluating their ability now? Good to know, for future reference and whatnot.

No, then we'd be talking about his 10-22 record in Cleveland, too. The guy was horrendous. Basically destroyed the team in a single year.

The only reason the Jets lost back-to-back AFCCG's is because of Eric Mangini. Rex had nothing to do with it.

Fire a HC that goes 9-7, but keep a clown that hasn't had a winning record in 4 years???????

Only the Jets.

does mangini beat manning and brady in back to back weeks with sanchez at QB, smith at safety and lito sheppard at corner ?

I'm bored and pissed off, say something stupid (again)

The only reason Mangini won anything in that last season was Brett Favre. He's a terrible coach, something he continued at his next (and last) stop. He's also the guy who ratted out Belichick. A little funny to see a Pat fan leap to defend him.

Rex holds the franchise record for playoff wins, and he did it not with Namath, O'Brien, Testaverde, or Pennington at QB, but with Mark Sanchez. Eric Mangini had nothing to do with that.

Let's just say we disagree, and leave it at that.

Mangini knew how to build a program and construct a staff. Rex is lost in that area... Rex is probably a better DC though. HC though, it's Mangini.

I'm starting to think that Rex will never see the light of day as an NFL head coach again. He (or his people) even conceded as much in that bush Mehta article yesterday. What an absolute waste of six years.

He took a good roster and ran with it, give him credit for that. But all the good free agents got old, all the good assistants left and Sanchez got worse. Now we just have Rex.

He's Herm Edwards with a few more flukey wins early on. An awful leader who was increasingly exposed the further away the team got from the previous regime's philosophy. Substitute Teacher Syndrome.

Seriously, what team in the NFL would want to hire that clown and bring the circus to town?

Even the Raiders are not that stupid.

Rex defenders at this point remind me of those Japanese WW2 Holdouts still waiting in those caves to wage war.

It's a freaking mystery. When you look at how hard his and Rob Ryan's defenses have hit the skids in recent years, the league might conclude that their shtick isn't even viable anymore.

This was supposed to be a thread about the incompetence of Eric Mangini. Shockingly, it got derailed.

If you tracked their progress in recent years, this was their evolution:

2009: "Finally, a coach that can talk the talk and walk the walk!"

2010: "Better than Belichick!"

2011: "Almost-Super-Bowl Hangover, obviously. Rex will get the team back on top NEXT YEAR!"

2012: "It's all Sanchez's fault!"

2013: "No coach in the league would have gotten this team to 8-8!"

Summer, 2014: "Glad Rex is getting to build the team in HIS image finally!"

November, 2014: "It's all Idzik's fault!"

You'll see a lot of this, which is both predictable and slimy: "I'm not saying that Rex doesn't deserve to be fired, but..." What the purpose of these types of posts is is to allow these same Rex fans to slip back into the conversation in two years and talk about the insurmountable obstacles that Rex faced here, and how each of his losses should have an asterisk next to it. In lieu of admitting that they were flat-out wrong about Rex, they're going to lie in the weeds and tack together a pre-fabricated revisionist history of his time here. Plant the seeds, if you will.
