Pro Bowl ~ ~ ~

— With less than a week to go for fans to vote, the Jets have three players—Muhammad Wilkerson, Sheldon Richardson, Nick Mangold—in the top six at their respective positions in Pro Bowl balloting.

Among defensive tackles, Wilkerson is currently in the fourth place (176,224) and Richardson is in sixth (130,783), while Mangold is fifth among centers (115,102), according to the latest figures provided by the NFL.

Mangold has been to the Pro Bowl five times in his previous eight seasons. Neither Wilkerson nor Richardson has been to the Pro Bowl, though Wilkerson was second-team All-Pro last year and Richardson was the 2013 NFL rookie of the year. Though both are listed as D-tackles, they play defensive end in the Jets' 3-4 system.

Wilkerson had been second in the fan balloting among D-tackles as recently as a month ago.

Fans have until Monday to vote online at NFL.com/probowl/ballot. The fans' votes will then be combined with votes from players and coaches, who will submit their ballots on Dec. 19, to determine this season's Pro Bowlers. The selections for the 2015 Pro Bowl will be announced on Dec. 23.

The Pro Bowl will be played on Jan. 25 in Glendale, Ariz., which is where Super Bowl XLIX will be held one week later. Like last year, the Pro Bowl will again not involve the traditional AFC-NFC matchup; players selected will get "drafted" to play on the two respective teams during the week of the game.

Re : "...flashes/ing..."

~ ~  Marty Mornhinweg on Geno Smith: 'This isn't about flashing' talent

-- Marty Mornhinweg left the distinct impression Thursday that he didn't love Geno Smith's "Pro Bowl" quote."We've all got to do better," said the New York Jets' offensive coordinator, who was asked to give his reaction. "We all have to play better and we have to coach better. We'll leave it at that."

For those who missed it, Smith said earlier this week he has "shown flashes of being a Pro Bowl quarterback." He took a lot of grief for the comment, mostly from fans and media. He wasn't proclaiming himself a Pro Bowl quarterback, but rather a young, inconsistent player who has played well in spurts. Nevertheless, it was a poor choice of words. He had to know the words "Pro Bowl" would end up in a headline.

Pressed, Mornhinweg elaborated -- a little.

"He certainly has shown flashes of playing well," he said. "Like I said, we all have to play better. This isn't about flashing or anything. We've got to play better. Everything we do has to be better. That takes hard work, it takes preparation, it takes a certain mentality."

Translation: Stop talking, Geno, and start playing better.

A quick observation of quarterback Geno Smith and how he played in the New York Jets' 16-11 win in Week 15:

There were no........ Pro Bowl ....... :winking0001:  flashes (wink, wink), but there were flashes of a competent quarterback. Smith finished with a touchdown pass and no interceptions for only the fourth time in his career (27 starts), producing his first win since Week 1.

The most encouraging aspect of his game was his efficiency on play-action passes. Facing a steady diet of loaded boxes, Smith was able to throw against man-to-man coverage in the secondary. On play-action passes, he completed 6 of 9 passes with a touchdown, averaging 10.7 yards per attempt, according to ESPN Stats & Information. Where was this against the Miami Dolphins three weeks ago?

Smith has played a little better since returning from his three-game benching. Before the benching, he posted a 65.6 passer rating and a 27.6 Total QBR. His post-benching numbers are 78.2 and 29.7, respectively. We're not talking quantum leap, but it's something.

"It gave me an opportunity to re-evaluate the way I was going about things, my mindset," Smith said, recalling his time on the bench.

Specifically, he focused on improving his movement within the pocket.

"From watching the film on my previous games, I felt like my pocket presence wasn't near close to where it needed to be," he said. "That was something I wanted to work on -- moving my feet, keeping plays alive, making the right decision and trying to get the ball out quick."

This week's game against the New England Patriots will be a good measuring stick because, obviously, they're a lot better than the Jets' most recent opponents. Smith played his best game of the year in Week 7 at New England (a season-high Total QBR of 59.8), but the Jets lost 27-25 because they were poor in the red zone.

With the way the Jets' 3-12 season has gone, you can't expect them to get a ton of players into the Pro Bowl.

But they could (and should) land more than one player in the game. The all-star game's participants will be announced Tuesday.

Participants are determined by fan, player and coach voting. Each group represents one-third of the final result.

The top six players in voting make the game, regardless of conference. The Pro Bowl is no longer AFC vs. NFC, so the two teams are determined by a draft, with three players from each position on each roster.

The game will be held Jan. 25 at the Cardinals' stadium in Glendale, Ariz., the same venue that will host the Super Bowl a week later.

Coming out of fan voting, three Jets appear in contention for Pro Bowl bids: center Nick Mangold, and defensive tackles Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson.

Will they make it? You'll have to wait until Tuesday to find out.
In the meantime, check out the photo gallery above for the four Jets players who we think deserve to land in the Pro Bowl.

Four? Yes, four. We provide our explanation in the gallery.
